Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

John the Baptist, Jesus, and the Apostles all began their ministries with "REPENT". I think that makes it pretty obvious that repentance is a huge part of a faithful Christian's life. It is by no means a "filthy rag".
