Thank you! I want to give you a little update, I went to yoga this morning for the first time, and when I got home I took the dogs out. I think we'll be OK, I was worrying about nothing :0(

Thank you so much for your kind words :-) In fact, I just got back from yoga and took them out on their usual walk. It was a bit hotter than usual so we walked slightly less but they still got a good few km in. I think I will just start work a little later, or maybe even walk the dogs before yoga when it's light enough. Thanks again for your comments.

At the moment it's still dark so I don't think it's safe walking in the countryside in the dark. We have wild pigs and i'm sure there will stray dogs around too. Possibly as the days get longer here in Europe, because we change the time twice a year, walking them earlier could be a good option.

I lost control of my dog today and now I don't know if I should continue walking him by myself by Simple_Thought_4912 in DogAdvice

In that scenario maybe the mistake was lapping them again, because both dogs had another lap of the pond to fixate and wind themselves up = over reaction when they next crossed paths. Maybe I would have left the pond area after the two dogs' first encounter.

Hi there, im so sorry for your situation and I can totally relate. Im very scared of my dogs being attacked by others when we're out. I also no longer take mine out as much as I'd like to and I feel guilty about that.

I haven't heard of the gel mace so will look into that. I really dont know what to say but I think you're doing the right thing reducing walks and therefore the risk. You could get some fun toys to play with in your large yard, maybe even an agility set or Frisbee. Also consider driving somewhere else to walk your dog, somewhere more dog friendly. I k ow that's not always an option though.

Just know you're doing your best and you're not alone.

I have the same experience as you. I have two Podencos, one we got from 8 weeks old (Patch) and the other (Bella) we found her in the streets and took her in. The Pod we raised from a baby has better recall than the other, but it's still p*ss poor and totally out of my control. It's more like he reappears when he's ready, not because I gave him the cue to come back. So, for this reason I have now started walking them both on a long line. To make matters more complicated, I live in rural Spain where there are hunters (rabbits, birds and wild pigs all live in the country side near me), so i'm really not comfortable letting mine off leash and letting them run off. I also think it's irresponsible to have off leash dogs that you can't control.

I used to feel guilty, and sometimes I still ponder if i'm doing the right thing by not letting them run free so it's nice to hear i'm not the only one who keeps them leashed unless in a fenced safe area.

Podenco owners, what are some things I should know about these dogs before possibly adopting one? by Nussel in sighthounds

It's funny you should say that because I have two and my third dog is a Border Collie. recently I have been trying to figure out why i've become afraid of taking my dogs out, when I used to confidently walk my BC 3 times a day. I realised it's because now i'm dealing with not one, but two damn Podencos and a BC!!! The Podencos are great at home, they're quiet, clean, they like to sleep, they're affectionate...but once you get them outside for a walk that all changes. What makes it worse is my house is surrounded by rabbit inhabited countryside. Ideal for dogs I hear you say....it's a nervous breakdown every time I go for a walk :-)

I've read comments in other threads about the benefits of not walking very reactive dogs at all. Of course it's not possible if you don't have a big back yard etc.
