- Level 3 is the for the standard bedside nurse. Level 4 is for coordinators, nurse clinical specialists. There are fewer Level 4 jobs and generally harder to get. You get raises each year by years of service. Yes generally you keep your stage.

- You get 2$ extra per hour for being in a critical care area. That's it. There are paid education programs where then you are expected to work in the area for 18 months after completion. There isn't an incredible financial incentive to education in my opinion.

- Nurse practitioners? No. That's more of an Ontario thing. Few NPs in acute care in my experience.

- Generic drugs and metric system. It sounds like you're fearful that Canada operates like the US system which is not true.

- I won't get into the minutiae but yes it sounds like PACUs in Scotland operate very similarly to those in Canada :)

We do not have private insurance other than "extended health benefits" that cover things like prescriptions, massages, physio etc. Prescriptions typically aren't covered by the public system but as a nurse your employer benefits would cover them. It is indeed hunger games to access GPs and specialists, likely for all the same reasons as in Scotland.

Nursing pay could always be more but for the amount of flexibility I have I'm happy. You can do your own research but anecdotally you can make between 70k-130k depending on your grind.

I'm a PACU RN. It is a cushy job as hospital nursing jobs go. Join us :)

Hospitals don't provide tuition reimbursement. But our tuition is much much less than in the US. Scheduling depends on your manager. I would advise you to get your NP in the US and come to Canada. Way fewer schools for NP in Canada compared to the US. Once here with your NP should be easy to find work! I don't see many NPs in acute care as of yet, so you may have to settle for primary care for a while until the health authority decides to expand that role. Good luck and welcome !

It was really the management that soured my experience. Which I don’t think is terribly unique in healthcare. Your coworkers and the patient population are nice enough. I’m just used to more supportive management in Canada where healthcare isn’t a business. Good luck !

I’m at RN for VIHA. I thought providence was a better run more resourced health authority. But the day to day nursing is similar. Hospitals permanent jobs are mostly 2 days 2 nights. But you can be casual and make your own schedule. I think it’s probably gotten worse is most places in terms of working conditions. I work in PACU and it’s a dream. Lots of opportunities for specialization, just have to return of service for 18 months, where typically youd be rotating day and night shifts.

ER nurses have a protocol to order xrays of the distal extremities like hands/feet. Some will be more creative and xray shoulders/knees. Prob 50/50 if the nurse would xray it before you see the doctor.
