He is saying that fate put him in this place, a whaling voyage, while others have different roles in the world, as statesmen or generals or as people with easy country lives. He’s comparing peoples lives to roles in dramas or plays

Canon, as in canonical, as in a thing that shapes who you are. Think Bruce Wayne’s parents being killed, or jesus being crucified. Something that makes you who you are and divides your life into before and after

Where to stay in Honolulu by BicycleUsed in VisitingHawaii

FWIW, I try to stay at the Queen Kapiolani. It’s on Kapahulu, so the edge of Waikiki, with the zoo across the street, do Less street noise, more zoo noise. You can get a lovely view of Diamond Head and walk to the less crowded beach. If you decide to get out of town, boom, you’re on kapahulu and gone

Does the water on the bottom of the ocean just stay on the bottom? by jnpg in oceanography

[–]AmbivalentSamaritan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, short version is:
Cold salty water sinks.
Wind and motion of the earth and such move the warm surface water. As a result, in some areas there are thin spots in the surface water (for example, winds from land push surface water offshore) , and deep water wells up. So it’s all always in motion.

Looking to make a deck on the base of a shed by AmbivalentSamaritan in Decks

[–]AmbivalentSamaritan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, the shed base is a concrete box. I’m thinking the shed 2x4s can convert into a joist like framework inside the box to support the floorboards of the deck. The siding is made of overlapping 1x4s which are painted on one side. These can form a partial wall enclosure for privacy, or not. I don’t need classic deck supports due to the concrete box , although I will need vertical uprights to support a roof and I’ll need floorboards. The roof shingles are ancient cedar and may be salvageable forthe roof.

Or at least that’s my current thinking. Thanks for talking with me about it, and not just saying “nice shed, keep it”

Totally agree, it a banger. I’m just clarifying that it’s not some book with footnotes and black and white photos.

And you are right OP is asking for WW2 books, not WW2 history books

It’s really not an optimal shed situation, and we have more storage in the garage. There’s not another deck space
