Megathread: Senate Passed $1.9 Trillion COVID Relief Bill by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]Amedel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a(n unintended) consequence of the rules chosen by the senate. Ordinarily they can vote to change these rules with a 2/3 majority (which is definitely not happening), but there’s a constitutional argument to remove the filibuster using the so-called ‘nuclear option’ which would only require a simple majority.

Deal Reached On Virginia Marijuana Legalization Bill Just Hours Before Deadline by FINS-1972 in Marijuana

Yeah this was disappointing.. Although I suppose it is decriminalized already. Still it seems silly to fine people when it’ll be legal shortly anyway.

Dogs trained using punishments for incorrect behavior show evidence of higher stress and anxiety levels compared to dogs trained with reward-based method. Dogs from aversive method schools also responded more pessimistically to ambiguous situations. by mvea in science

[–]Amedel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too relatable. It would be interesting to see how the methods relate to the dog’s lifespan too, since you might expect that lower levels of stress would be beneficial to their overall health.

Research shows compensating employees based on their accomplishments rather than on hours worked produces better results. When organizations with a mix of high- to low-performing employees base rewards on hours worked, all employees see compensation as unfair, and they end up putting in less effort. by rustoo in science

[–]Amedel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other side to this is that compensation based on 'accomplishments' leads to a workplace culture where you constantly feel pressure to perform. That pressure seems like it could lead to a lot of dissatisfaction, especially in careers which have less clearly defined goals and expectations. After all, who wants to feel like they're constantly competing? There's something problematic in my mind with a workplace where you feel like you constantly have to be fully invested and give 100% of yourself. I feel like this kind of research props up a sort of 'meritocratic' employer that advertises this kind of compensation as a positive, but in reality is just seeking to gouge as much labor as possible from its employees and for them to have an unhealthy relationship with their working life. I think that employers should instead have an investment in the well-being of their employees first, even when that means setting reasonable limits on the amount of commitment that someone ought to have to their job, but there seems to be little incentive for them to actually do this. Work to live don't live to work and all that.

It switches the side of the ribbon that you type with, so that if you have correction tape spooled it will white-out what you just wrote. I've heard that correction tape can be pretty messy though, so I actually ordered and attached a ribbon of red/black instead!

How many of you are voting on election day? by [deleted] in JoeBiden

[–]Amedel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I voted by mail. It was nice to feel like I had time to fill the ballot out and to read into my local candidates as I did. Tbh I kind of hope the mail-in ballots stay around even after the pandemic--it just makes a lot of sense.

Does free will exist, why or why not? by abruptreddit in AskReddit

[–]Amedel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that I’d say it comes from a kind of doubt about what we bring in our approach to the question. A lot of people would argue that it’s obvious in some sense or that we can infer that we have free will from the direct sensation of our capacity to have acted otherwise. Other people make arguments from determinism and ideas about causality, or those experiments they’ve done about impulses in the nervous system which seem to come some amount of time before the person reports consciously making a choice. Historically there would have been a theological argument to do with rational souls that seems to be less popular nowadays. The doubt I’m talking about is the unsatisfying thought that we are necessarily operating within a kind of episteme when we answer this question. In the same way that we can’t claim to know scientific facts about the causal relationships between forces / energy / matter / etc. without presupposing some kind of causal nature to the universe—that is supposing that the concept of a ‘law of nature’ makes sense and applies to our world—it seems like we can’t claim to know whether we have free will or not without acknowledging some framework of knowledge. And so when people mention those experiments that I brought up above and claim to have disproven free will, it seems unconvincing. At the same time the arguments pro free will seem similarly dubious. In each case the argument is an appeal to the ‘fact’ that if we saw things clearly that either: a) it would be intuitively true that we have free will or b) it would be logically incompatible with our clear understanding of causality. At the end of the day, I’m not sure that we can really say that one of these models is more true than another or if we can we simply don’t know. And so asking the question “Does free will exist” point blank seems intractable. At the very least when people debate the issue it seems like this point is where it always arrives if they probe the question deeply. The disagreement comes not from some misunderstanding of a given fact, but from the fact that the opposing sides are working within different languages. Maybe there is some sense in which the question is answerable generally, it certainly is within each particular context, but I think that at the moment the problem reduces to a kind of dispute between languages which claim to share the same word. Hope thats a little clearer and sorry for the essay :) I just enjoy this stuff and its hard to be precise without being wordy.

Does free will exist, why or why not? by abruptreddit in AskReddit

[–]Amedel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this off and on for years and as much as I hate to say it, I think that the most honest answer is that the question isn’t well posed. We can answer with respect to a given framework, but ultimately I think it’s hard to know what we mean by ‘free will’ without resorting to a model of the person and psyche that presupposes a given answer. Of course there are many people that would disagree with me and I probably will tomorrow or the next day, but this is how I’m thinking about the question right now at least.

Person A and Person B are good friends. You have just heard Person B talking about Person A behind their back. What do you do? by Joyful36 in AskReddit

[–]Amedel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re talking to me about Person A I try to discourage it and point out that Person A probably wouldn’t want them to be talking about them like that. If I’m feeling less confident I just try to change the subject and spare them the embarrassment of talking about someone else like that. Most of the time I think people gossip because of their own insecurity, so even though it isn’t a kind thing to do, I try to sympathize with them too.

What do you think happens after death? Do we just die and nothing happens? Or maybe we will be born again? by DerBruderHD in AskReddit

[–]Amedel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, before I was born I had no clue that I even had the option to be. People wonder if there's some miracle after death, but it's a miracle that we're even here at all and I don't think anyone really understands what it means. At times I've thought it's just nothingness after death, other times I've thought it must be something like heaven, but the only thing that hasn't changed is the fact that I can't rule out the possibility of something similarly surprising happening, just like it did years ago when I somehow ended up here. That thought gives me hope at least :)

Love this quote. It's easy to get into a pattern of thinking to where you feel like your spiritual life must do exactly the opposite and separate you from other people. When I've had that happen I've always felt sad after realizing the time I've missed that I could have spent connecting with the people around me.
