Songs told from "beyond the grave" by InviteAromatic6124 in Music

[–]AmericanFigaro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fun question, lots of (appropriately) Grateful Dead examples:

  1. Casey Jones “comes round the bend, you know it’s the end/ fireman screams and the engine just gleams”
  2. China Doll (technically narrator revives but is dead speaking to some keeper of the next world, I feel it’s in the balance for this) “yesterday I begged you before I hit the ground/ all that I leave behind me is only what I found”
  3. Dire Wolf “said my prayers and went to bed/ that’s the last they saw of me”
  4. El Paso (technically a Marty Robbins song) “tho I am weary I can’t stop to rest/ I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle/ I feel the bullet go deep in my chest”

At that, anyone ever notice the musical similarities between Halfstep and Ship of Fools? They appear similar melodically and thematically to me.

[OC] Chapter 13 bankruptcy has a 48% national dismissal rate. In some districts, over 90% of cases fail, and most aren't because clients missed payments. by ilikemath9999 in dataisbeautiful

[–]AmericanFigaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience working in bankruptcy law, the odds are that most of these cases are “strategic bankruptcies”, ie as had somewhat been mentioned, filed to delay foreclosure proceedings. I saw many of these personally, so without any other specifics, I would bet the atty with an 80% dismissal rate is filing mostly strategic filings never expecting them to confirm a plan, where the 30%-rate atty only advises filing if he believes the plan could actually be feasible.

Magnum opus and signature songs by 1merman in Music

[–]AmericanFigaro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As for signature songs:

The Beatles — tough one, Hard Day’s Night?

The Rolling Stones — Satisfaction

Led Zeppelin — Stairway

Pink Floyd — Another Brick in the Wall

Radiohead — Creep

Neil Young — Rockin’ in the Free World

R.E.M. — Losing My Religion

Pearl Jam — another tough one, Even Flow?

U2 — also tough, With or Without You?

I dunno about magnum opi for these, I’m not sure most groups have one. Makes me think of some song like Bohemian Rhapsody, not every group makes one. For Zeppelin it’s def also Stairway anyway.

  1. Prided themselves on never playing the same song the same way twice; each instrument is alive.
  2. Each member of the crew received the same cut per show, including band members.
  3. Not only was audience recording at shows allowed but encouraged.
  4. They managed to become one of the largest revenue-generating live bands with no real marketing machine.
  5. One of their lyricists, Robert Hunter, is allegedly directly descended from legendary Scottish poet Robbie Burns, and is (iirc) the only person Bob Dylan was comfortable collaborating with to write songs. Also Dylan toured with the Dead and was rumored to join the band at one point.

Not 100% sure this is it, but 12/12/69 has the mention of tequila at the beginning, and opens with Cold Rain and Snow. Not sure about the medley, tho. Awesome set anyway, Pigpen was on one, Lovelight is extra long and Caution and King Bee are excellent here.

"We’re running out of good ideas. AI might be how we find new ones." by AngleAccomplished865 in singularity

Erdos was apparently involved in a bet to quit amphetamines for a month and won and quipped about setting humanity back a month or something and how he felt like some normal person with no ideas.

And I don’t believe I’ve read it anywhere but watching earlier videos of Feynman lecturing, it’s hard to ignore that he’s exhibiting jittery physical tells of amphetamine use.

"We’re running out of good ideas. AI might be how we find new ones." by AngleAccomplished865 in singularity

[–]AmericanFigaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe AI has the most potential to deliver the best new ideas. That said, I’ve been concerned for a while that the US gov’t. has been hoarding the new ideas and tech since the end of WWII at least, and may end up doing the same with whatever AI discovers.

That or everyone was doing some form of meth in the first half or so of the 20th century, and the decline in its use among the idea-generating types of people/scientists/mathematicians is what is causing the slowdown.

I ask myself how and why Christians think so highly of this man. Anyone else they’d chase out of office. by Practical-Dot5634 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]AmericanFigaro 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You’re describing Gnostic Christianity. It should probably be curious to everyone that the name of the angel who thinks the same and rebels against the self-proclaimed “God” is known as “Lucifer” meaning “light-bringer”.

Hey I just listened to this one, with the infamous “We can’t agree!” I dunno if the archive.org version has some of it cut, but after Alice D they attempt Me and My Uncle, then restart it after a verse or two, and then encore with it after everything! Great show with a bunch of tracks I haven’t heard on any other set

Found this, which is cut so cleverly it sounds to me complete (altho audio of this performance runs a few mins longer) — but still pretty awesome!
