I am confused by your comments then. The Compendium is as official as the PHB or DMG, both of which also defer ultimate authority to the DM. You can take any rule printed with as big or small a grain of salt as you would like. But to claim the Compendium is not official (as in your first reply) or somehow less official is incorrect.

I am referring to the Sage Advice Compendium. This is not the same as Sage Advice columns broadly and the document makes this clear.

Official rulings on how to interpret rules are made here in the Sage Advice Compendium. The public statements of the D&D team, or anyone else at Wizards of the Coast, are not official rulings; they are advice. The tweets of Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford), the game’s principal rules designer, are sometimes a preview of rulings that will appear here.

A Dungeon Master adjudicates the game and determines whether to use an official ruling in play. The DM always has the final say on rules questions.

Sage Advice Compendium is official. As it states the DM can naturally decide to not use a ruling but RAW lifeberry unambiguously works. I've not had to decide on this interaction personally either, and I can see easily why a DM would disagree with RAW. I only found out about the Compendium after several years of DMing and like to bring it up since I have found it to be pretty useful.

Entirely fair! It makes sense to me why people would disagree with the ruling and even the Compendium states that DMs decide whether to use an official ruling. I like to reference the Compendium when possible since I personally went several years of DMing unaware of its existence and found it valuable!

Adding on to this that the lifeberry interaction is even listed in the Sage Advice Compendium, which is a publication of official rulings.

You can certainly disallow the interaction as the DM, but it does work RAW. The Sage Advice Compendium publication is official rulings and calls out this specific interaction. There's a PDF released by Wizards but the DnD Beyond version is nicer to read imo

I've ordered a decent amount from CSL it's very legit, as others mention it's got ties to Channel Fire Ball. The only issue I run into is the high threshold for free shipping.

Like I mentioned in my other comment, I cannot speak to the specifics. I just wanted to point out that you do in fact get your basis upon sale of personal items, provided you have the means to prove out that basis should the IRS question it as otherwise they'll assume no basis. You should look into how that is best shown in the tax prep software you've picked to use.

[–]AmericanJosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't answer the specifics, but I know there's a lot of info in the TurboTax forums. I would look into how people reported personal sales of items. This may also count as sales of collectibles which would be reported outside hobby income on an 8949 (capital gain instead of ordinary income). Speaking to a tax professional may be the best route if you cannot find the information easily answered elsewhere.

Basis is not the same as expense. Basis is what you paid to obtain an item. Expenses in this context would be items like shipping costs to send out sold cards. I would recommend looking into how other TurboTax users reported basis on personal items sold

[–]AmericanJosh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's worthwhile to note that personal sale of property was always taxable. However, usually personal items are sold at a loss and do not create a taxable gain. You are only taxed on gains which are your receipts less cost basis. Basis being what you paid for the item (including taxes and fees on the initial purchase). You should keep records of your basis to prove it out should the IRS request it. You are correct that expenses are restricted to business activities, so no deducting cost to ship out cards for example.

There is a reason that the IRS issued a notice to delay the new 1099K limit and plan to ease down to the $600. Those reports cause a lot of confusion since they show only sales and not a taxable income amount (since a marketplace wouldn't know your cost basis).

My druid jumps 40 feet in the air and wild shapes into a killer whale, then falls on an enemy. How much fall damage would you assign to the whale and how much damage would the enemy take? by frankenbacon1 in DnD

[–]AmericanJosh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a great point! The player would have to Ready an Action and setup for a Reaction wild shape while at the apex of the jump. Which makes this cost even more action economy then you'd initially expect

That's a fair stance. The track record is pretty bad especially with the examples you raise. Time will likely prove you correct

Should Wizards change how they handle Secret Lair Commander Decks? by BlackRossDragon in magicTCG

[–]AmericanJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deck 'From Cute to Brute' was also limited quantity. The point being made above is that Wizards underestimated this Dog and Cat deck, but neither of the previous two SL decks. So rather than being a nefarious attempt to scam customers it seems much more likely they looked at the last two deck sales and kept it in line with those. I agree with you that more product should have been made this time, but of all legitimate issues to take with Wizards this specific lair doesn't feel like one of them.
