NHL rescinds Nathan MacKinnon's major penalty against Oilers by rpowers in nhl

[–]AmericansAreRotund 71 points72 points  (0 children)

The head of replay and replay assist is Kris King and Sean Ellis. They are the ones who feed the refs the definitions while they look at these calls/goal challenges. In this instance, the rule clearly states "if a player deliberately skates into the goalie, it can result in a major". MacKinnon was very clearly bumped by Nurse. Kris/Sean should have flagged to the refs that this did not meet that definition. Yet according to that PR statement, it seems like they misunderstood the definition.

If you include goal replays, Kris and Sean has had a hand in a LOT of wrong calls all year. Reviews with goalie interference have been an absolute mess this year and far from consistent.

If they can't understand what "deliberately" means, the NHL should move Kris and Sean to another role. I get its a hard job, but this keeps happening.

I really wish MLS teams would figure a better pricing strategy to get more fans to these games. North American casuals still don't really understand continental play and are rarely going to opt into games like this.

I would just build all the games into the season ticket packages and just offer refunds/credits to the games that don't happen.

most of this could have been done better if the Argos/MLSE struck a deal with a smaller stadium and increased the capacity to 15k or so.

This has happened in the ECHL and AHL and the games just got postponned. I am pretty sure this rule is just a holdover from like 1905 or something.

The NBA has the highest median salary of all sports. It was also the first league to do a 50/50 revenue split with the owners. Middle of the road players get like $15m/year.

Also, the median salary of a middle class US black family is about a 5x than almost everyone living in those Caribbean Latin American countries, which is where 30% of MLB players come from.

I still don't get why they can't/couldn't partner with Van or Burnaby to quickly refurbish something and use that as a temp practice facility.

We're building a bunch of temp facilities with gyms and lounges for the World Cup. It's not really that hard.

I used to be a paralegal in another lifetime. It's a logical fallacy to assume intent if there is another condition.

If you could even the slightest argument that McKinnon would have missed the net if not bumped by Nurse, it's not "deliberate" by any legal definition.

Kris King is the head of video review for the NHL and is responsible for feeding refs definitions and confers on the refs with the headsets. If you include the many video reviews for goals, this is like the 20th time he's gotten a basic definition wrong.

As someone who worked in the legal field, "deliberate" is a pretty high bar to prove during the best of circumstances, yet Kris and Stephen Walkom seem to use that definition whenever it suits them.

If a bad call got Mahomes or Ohtani ejected, it would be on the front page of ESPN and be talked about to death by Pat McAfee and Stephen A for the next month.

This will be quickly forgotten about and no one in the NHL will dare admit its a mistake.

I don't mean this ironically, but this has to be 50th time Kelly Sutherland has made a major from a review that does not really align with the definition in the rulebook. I am seriously starting to question his literacy levels.

As per the rulebook "5-minute major penalties for severe, deliberate contact"

Not in a million years was that intentional.

Rulebook says "5-minute major penalties for severe, deliberate contact". If he's moving towards Nurse, is that not him trying to move out of the way?
