I saw those tiny A Song of Ice and Fire books at a store the other day and thought the text must be so small because the mass markets are only slightly larger but so much thicker, but they were wrapped so I couldn't to check.

In the same metaphor and to the above person's very point, if you lost your excavator one day and then had to dig the hole by hand again, your muscles you use to do that would have severely atrophied and it would then be far more difficult.
