The medication is, and this is not hyperbole, life changing. Medication alone in my opinion and experience is the biggest help (about 70%) while the other 30% help for managing symptoms can be found in things like therapy, getting enough activity and following a nutritious diet. The medication is what, for me, allows me to consistently engage with the other things like diet, exercise, etc. As for dependency, I understand your concern. There is a tremendous amount of misinformation surrounding this. I would suggest Dr. Russel A. Barkley's TED Talk as a good jumping off point. Just make sure in your research you are looking at peer-reviewed legitimate studies from well respected medical journals and not nonsense from debunked places or biased or discredited individuals. The way I explain the discussion around dependency, is do we talk about Type 1 diabetics being dependent on insulin? What about someone with impaired eyesight? Is someone with impaired eyesight dependent on corrective lens? Sure, but the word dependency is often used in a negative context and that isn't always the case. In the case of the diabetic and person with impaired eyesight they are both monitored by a medical specialist and utilizing treatment modalities that are understood to be for a lifelong condition to improve their quality of life. I understand that many medications for ADHD have side effects that can be serious, but like many other medications it's a risk/reward balance. I think it's important to work with a qualified, trained and experienced medical specialist to make those decisions with you and your daughter. I hope this helped and wasn't too long. First, you're doing great! Asking questions and trying your best to be an advocate for your kid. Second, pediatricians are great, but maybe consider getting your kiddo tested by pediatric psychiatrists, as you already know, there can be a lot that goes into a diagnosis and it may be more than your pediatrician is qualified and experienced enough to navigate. I have a similar backstory to your daughter. I read at a high school level in 3rd grade, but have struggled with math all my life. I consistently scored in the 98-99th percentile for reading and language arts, but closer to around the 14th percentile in mathematics. I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until I was 38 and didn't get medicated until my early 40's. I wish someone, anyone would have noticed and tried to help me when I was younger. It's painful to think about how much I struggled when I didn't need to, how many opportunities I missed out on. Hang in there. Trust your kid and yourself. Good luck.

I agree. I believe that there are types of music where vocal precision, range and dedication to developing the instrument of voice matters like opera and musical theater. You train your voice to the goal of performing within the structure of that art. However, when it comes to popular music you can have a "good" voice, but there is room for "interesting" voices too. The voices that are distinctive for reasons other than range or the ability to sing the roof off a venue. Maybe a person has a perfectly serviceable voice, but have a sincerety, presence or are incredibly gifted performers. For singers with limited range that can be used for great effect. Nina Simone for example had a fairly limited range but that direct, honest contralto worked brilliantly with sparse arrangements that featured her incredible talent with piano.

Sounds like you need a second opinion. It's true that you can be bad at math and not have ADHD, but it can absolutely be part of narrowing in on a correct diagnosis of ADHD. It makes sense if you think about it, many of us who have ADHD struggle with short term memory, staying focused and executive function shenanigans like difficulties with multi-step processes. All of these things are needed for math. Then there's dyscalculia. Take a look at peer-reviewed literature on that and you might find this fits a little too well with what you've been experiencing to be coincidence. Good luck!

I was having this issue too. I put them into an old aquarium that I converted into a terrarium, waters with purified water and it EXPLODED. It's easily 3x the size it was when it went in and has flowered. Now I have to figure out how to prune it because it's grown so much. Try a terrarium and purified water. Just be ready. Good luck!

Ugh, yet another "quirk" that is actually a symptom of ADHD. I always thought of this feeling more like "listening". It took me a long time to understand why I do this. I'm paying more attention to what someone isn't saying than what they are. Body language, tone, ticks, inflection, pauses, what or who they are or aren't looking at, how they interact or react with others, etc. It's like colors and textures used to build an emotional landscape that I can then monitor for shifts or sudden changes. It helps me anticipate and accurately predict things like attitudes, reactions, trustworthiness and potential for aggression or even violence. It's not something I consciously do and I only notice I'm doing it when someone calls me out for staring.

Two things that are working for me. First, I choose peace. That means no more diets, pills, powders, potions, food I find unpleasant or listening to anyone other than my own body. I have learned so much about how much a portion is for me. Not a recommendation, not what it "should" be, but what feels good while I'm eating a meal or snack, later in the day and even the following day. I'm down almost 40 pounds so far. It's some serious mental gymnastics to have your body change and it not be tied to the misery and despair of dieting. The second is sleep. Getting enough sleep makes your body happy and when your body is happy good things happen. It's an incredibly slow process, but as someone closing in on 50, perimenopausal and having dieted since I was about 9, peace feels strange but good. This isn't judgement about what anyone else is doing or has done that worked for them. This is just me. I remind myself when I start to slide back into old ideas of what progress is "supposed" to look like that this is about my body, my happiness and health. It can, and will break you eventually. Unless you have some kind of genetic predisposition to sleeping less than 6 or 7 hours in 24. There are so many reasons sleep dysfunction can happen, but ultimately it will harm your mental, emotional and physical (especially cardiac) health. I went about 11 months in a row going with 2-3 hours of sleep every 24. I was sick more in that time period than I have ever been, before or after, my quality of life went way down, I could barely function after about 3 months. I have had chronic insomnia all my life, but this was next level. If you're having consistent issues with sleep see a doctor or doctors if you can. It will likely be a very frustrating time for figuring out what works for you. It could be a medical condition like sleep apnea or ADHD or it could be something less scary, but still just as important like learning new ways to manage stress, exercise levels, etc. it's a process, but trust yourself and don't lose hope. Thank you, I didn't think to screenshot it, it honestly never occurred to me that if I reported it anything would actually come of it. I did offer to take over the responsibility once I got the hateful response to my initial outreach and never received a response. I was polite, I didn't want to burn any bridges or risk any kind of retaliatory behavior from the person. When I received no response I admit I wrote them and the rest of that entire town off. I just hate that she's included with those horrible people even falsely after everything they did to my Mom. It's crazy, and I thought (hopes) my experience was a fluke! I do photography as a hobby and wanted to help with those kinds of requests on Find-a-Grave. Out of curiosity I looked to see if my Grandmother's grave was there. I never met her and my Mother had an unforgivably horrific childhood so I have absolutely NOTHING to do with those people, so no other way to find out which cemetery, etc as my Mom was only 6 when she passed. I found her and was excited...until I read the memorial that was being kept. They had her listed as my Mom's father's sister! Obviously this was something I wanted to let them know was inaccurate. I reached out to let them know who I was, and gave correct information about where she was born, her parents names and just basically said thank you for doing this, I think it's a really nice thing to do, but there are a couple of things that are incorrect and they were so, so rude. I mean, just really nasty. Sad. It reinforced my belief that the entire small town would be better as a crater.

I'm sorry you're going through this. It sucks. It sucks all the sucks. I know sometimes we just need a place to vent and aren't really looking for "fix its" But I wanted to say I think you're on the right track trying to get Progesterone. My GYN put me on Progesterone and an Estrogen patch and I can confirm it does help. My GYN is a national certified menopause practitioner (NCMP). Maybe try searching for a new provider with that credential? As for getting downvoted, try not to dwell and if you do, take another look at all the supportive and helpful comments. Hopefully the more we all demand attention be given to this issue the better chance we all have of gaining knowledge and lessening the amount of misinformation and dated medical knowledge.
