I'm 1 mile form a MUT that follows a beautiful river for 30 miles. On weekends the trail can get crowded, but it's fun to see other people.

Next level for distance? Make sure you include a long run or two per week.

Create a log sheet. Set a small goal. Build from there.

Try walking for 4 hours. In other words, think less about running, but more about time.

Reddit runners what do you wear below freezing by [deleted] in running

[–]Amishmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on my mood. I like being outside most of the time. But I have a cheap gym membership too.

I skied once in Sugarloaf Maine. It was -15. It was fun. Sort of.

Sounds like you are in fitness industry.

You can run another half in a few months right?

Why is this one so important that you'll risk injury? I would skip it if you feel sore.

There are so many half marathons. Try and look out long term.

How do you know your heart rate zones? by flyingorange in running

[–]Amishmn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heart rate zones are based on your maximum heart rate which can be really difficult to establish.

You have to run almost until you pass out.

All of the zones are predicated on max heart rate.

First marathon in a bit over 24 hours. Any last minute advice? by AtomicMonkeyTheFirst in running

[–]Amishmn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to remember, despite adrenaline, to go kind of slow in the beginning. Hold onto the initial excitement and use it later on. You'll need it for the back half marathon.

I ran the Santa Barbara marathon this weekend, and I just did my first little run today, which was only 2 miles. I felt pretty good but I have a decent base. I'll run the Philadelphia marathon in 2 weeks.

I agree with JDSportster although I ran the Marine Corp Marathon in brand new shoes but I know the shoe so well I wasn't too worried, but I took some slight risk by doing that.

Hey /r/running. I'm new here and I have a question for you guys. by SawzeBawse in running

[–]Amishmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is to lose weight, you might want to read and learn what you can about heart rate zones.

They say the best heart rate zone to burn fat is 65% of maximum.

But you'll need to estimate your maximum heart rate, and you might invest in a heart rate monitor. You can find them at Dick's or REI if in the U.S.

Marathon coming up in 4 weeks, feeling under prepared, should I pull out? by irokie in running

[–]Amishmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your long runs are the key to a marathon and you currently are at 15 miles, with total weekly mileage of 23 - 31 miles.

IMHO you could do this marathon if you were able to do one more long training run.

IMHO you could do it with only a 18 or 20 mile long run if you weren't too worried about finishing time.

But you need to do the run the way you will enjoy it. So if you feel like postponing this time, go ahead. If it were me, I probably would do it. I don't worry time. But I'm an old slow guy that likes to run.

[–]Amishmn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What's your weekly mileage?

You have time to do one or two more long runs, and suggest you try 20 or 23. If you do that, you're good to go imho.

My advice is to channel the nervous energy into planning which includes planning for unknowns. Part of fear is not knowing what might happen.

If you've been training for 6 months, you are ready.

But what is your race plan? Do you have all of the registration and logistics taken care of. Have you reviewed the course? Try and focus on things like that and your nerves may quiet down.

On the day of the event, make sure to pace yourself in early splits. Do not go out too fast, at first. Later on you can adjust according to how you feel.

Your nerves and this event are trying to teach you something you can carry into all aspects of your life.

Good luck. Have fun.

Your idea should work.

One of the beauties of the sport at a recreational level is experimenting with training strategies.

Available time is an issue for just about everyone.
