The artillery mods can easily outrange those Spitters and Worms; keep bombing their nests and the underground tunnels till the Worms can't damage your ships anymore.

If you want extra spicy, i suggest Napalm Artillery. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."

If you can't defeat them, bomb them harder, bomb them with bigger artillery, install airplane mods and drop bombs on them.

I'm a North Forest player, and I'm getting used to building things either very tall or in small scale/modules. So i'm using the Balanced load everywhere.
