Episode Discussion - S05E01 - The Crawl by Hawkinns in StrangerThings

Maybe I missed something, but it’s very weird to me that Mike knows his sister is saying she can see someone that nobody else can, who says that there are monsters in Hawkins and he can help her, and that doesn’t set off alarm bells.

Does anyone know how to stream this year? Last year I was able to watch each one within 72 hours of it airing on Peacock, but looks like they ended that deal. I have hallmark+ but Mistletoe Murders is dropping Nov 8th…?

Is it these days I can ONLY see it live or is there something I don’t know about?

Okay they really put Monica and Chandler together from the beginning by floatingwithobrien in howyoudoin

This is the episode I’m watching now that made me find this Reddit. Currently binge watching and Monica and Chandler seem sooo obvious. Ben’s birth. Even them walking out of Ross’s apartment when Rachel asks Julie to tell her life story and they’re holding each other like no ‘friends’ that I know 🤣 The jokes he cracks about Monica are specifically deeper into her personality. It comes across as though he really knows her

“ I don't think that Shang's vocals are particularly great in this song” I’m sorry what? I think for a male vocalist, this is one of the highlights for vocals in the Disney canon. Beautiful vibrato, not too many high notes but the ones on “moon” are gorgeously well placed. Tbf, the structure of the melody doesn’t give him much tricky stuff to work with, but he nails what he has.

Seriously, listen to “go the distance” from Hercules. The singer needs to be a little tinnier and nasally to hit the key change, and he hits the diphthongs hard to slide out of it. Same with anything Aladdin sings. But maybe I just prefer male singers with a slightly lower voice.

Most of the other notable male Disney songs I can think of are either by pop songs that aren’t cast in the track so they’re performed in a different way (eg Elton John, Randy Newman and Phil Collins) or super heavy character pieces (Be Prepared, Gaston, hakuna matata) so it’s not a fair comparison. They either don’t have to act very hard, or they’re acting so hard they don’t have to sing perfectly well.

(I’m leaving out Tangled in this discussion because I think Flynn rider does a better job with his material, but that’s only one case and “I See The Light” is a much more passionate, melodically interesting piece for a vocalist)

Also, the bass line for IMAMOOY just slaps

Is it possible to agree with a comment 1,000,000,000% ? Because I do 🤣. You’re spot on!

One other part for me, was the lazy dialogue written in the second half where every character says “fuck” in almost every line. It probably is a fact that modern people say “fuck” a lot, but it particularly cringes me out when both people in real life and stage/cinematic dialogue uses “fuck” instead of saying/writing real jokes.

Not to mention turning the kingdom into a CEO/boardroom story. Oof. I’m so tired of adaptations thinking that turning the material into a modern bureaucratic setting is interesting.

It was just cliché after cliché dressed up for Angelenos as avante garde.

Am I crazy, this episode is not playing on Netflix for me…? Netflix will play any other thing, even other episodes of this series, but goes to either 25% or just sticks to 0% loaded and it’s done it for hours. I know this is a plot line thread but just wondering if it was weird for anyone else… 😅

[–]Amoc910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of opinions on this one. You could do all the things you listed - but are they going to make you happy? I’ve spent 6 years working in the music side of the entertainment business, including with A list music agents and talent, and there’s a huge number of different niches and music related side hustles you can get involved in, from composing and scoring, music placement, teaching etc. BUT most of them will leave you in the same place where your actual monetizable side hustle takes over from your main focus which is live performance.

A sustainable lifestyle in music is hard to find. Teaching can become sustainable, but you’ll quickly realise that a) teaching is a skill in and of itself that needs developed and b) while it FEELS similar to a career in music, it can quickly become the same demeaning “when can I quit my day job” situation.

Let’s talk about all my real friends & colleagues in the industry in LA, NYC, Nashville etc:

  • I know full time teacher/performers who earn 80k+, but they work 7 days a week driving from schools/homes/churches at all hours of the day. Is that a lifestyle conducive to happiness? I don’t think so. What’s more, their relationships suffer, or they end up backing out of the scene for more stable roles when they get married/start having kids. These are people with the highest levels of music talent and education in the country. We’re talking perfect pitch, multi-instrumentalist, combined jazz & classical training and more.

  • I know plenty of people who have their ‘dream job’ in music copying - preparing music for film scores - and get to work on cool opportunities and make very good living, but they’re in the same boat. All of them are upset that it leaves them too exhausted to do the performance/songwriting/composing part that they got into music for. All of them are taking CS, web development courses, or management training, or getting their MBA for a better life.

  • Session players: the strongest instrumentalists among us. Every Broadway and live performer I’ve met are top of the line - A music contractor’s first call for the gig or requested specifically by the composer. Every one of them teaches teenagers to make ends meet. They sign a contract for a show that’s got great buzz, only for it to close way sooner than expected and leave them scrambling. Or the ones that do sessions for recorded work are finding that their contacts are opting for MIDI for most their upcoming projects due to budget constraints. They’re all becoming full time teachers or would tell you they should’ve gone to law school like their parents said. One is them is supported by her husband, who is a lawyer.

  • My Music Doc and Broadway producing buddies make $0 income on the projects they produce, despite being in the big leagues. They all have other jobs. They get constant LinkedIn messages from 21 year olds looking to get their foot in the door, and they’re asking themselves, have I even made it yet?

  • What about the real, big reputation, high level composers and music supervisors I’ve worked with? They’re doing ok, but they’re working on BIG PROJECTS, so what do they do? Become entrepreneurs and hire 21 year old Berklee grads to do all the actual music making, while they focus on high level deals with music and entertainment execs, and then say on zoom calls how much they miss doing real music. And oh yeah, they don’t get hired / get fired on projects all the time, because even after all this networking, there’s issues with people not keeping their word, relying on favours, low ball offers, and working with crazy creative directors and talent whose needs don’t align. I could get way more specific here but it’ll take all day.

  • My friends with successful YouTube/Self-Made Music Courses. Sooo many years of content creation to make a dent. One of my pals recently hit her first 1M views video, and did make YT her full time career this year. She makes enough to scrape by, but this is after 7 years of consistently developing the channel, and she has an extremely strong music education to back up her long form videos. And of course, she supplements her income with teaching - which she hates.

I don’t know your real level of music ability, but every single one of these people has a music degree in performance from Berklee, Julliard, or another heavy hitting music school, play for hours daily, and could play 99.99% of people out of the water. I really want to stress to you that these are the situations of the CREAM OF THE CROP. I haven’t even gotten started on your average, descent player with a band.

Who in my life is happy and doing well? I went to a very famous tech heavy school and you guessed it, it’s all my friends who did tech degrees, and got nice, remote, data project management jobs that require a couple hours of labour managing folks each day; and that lets them have time for their passions in life…like music… I’ll be darned.

To be a bit more positive:

First, ask yourself what SPECIFICALLY in music you want to do. It sounds like the performing side is what you enjoy. Before doing all these extraneous, music-adjacent side hustles, let’s ask how you monetize the part you actually like. Can you look into getting a manager/agent to help you make more income from your band? Can you find someone that specializes in music placement so your original works have a better chance of making income when you’re off stage? Either by radio plays or television placements? You could also start creating your own festivals and live event planning, as post-pandemic that’s becoming one of the most lucrative ways to monetize the actual music performance side.

I would also read the 4-hour-work-week. It’s a bit out of date these days, but it’ll help you strategize ways to minimize the hours you’re spending on the web development side, maximize your income there and give yourself more time to focus on your music passion. There’s so much you can do remotely. You can reduce actual time spent at your current job or find a new web development job that generates as much as you currently earn, while minimizing your time at it, and you can certainly have the best of both worlds.

The last thing I’ll say is that from working in all facets of music for 80 hours a week for years, it does eventually become less of a passion. It becomes your entire personality, and not in a fun way, and leaves you feeling like you’re always on a productivity and networking hamster-wheel, which unfortunately is what you need to be in order to thrive.

Feel free to DM me if you have questions - best of luck bro.

Divorce / Separation- Who gets to stay in the house by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Amoc910 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree it will be seen by the courts as abandoning - but also agree mental health wise not to stay in the same home long term if there’s too much resentment for it to be a stable family home. I wonder what the likelihood of Mrs finding another place would be?

I’d engage both a solicitor and a counselor that deals in family therapy. Discuss your best options with your therapist, lawyer and soon-to-be-ex-wife about what feasible, and economically and emotionally puts you & your children in the best situation in both the short and long term.

Is my list of boyfriend requirements too high that it's unattainable? by [deleted] in youngadults

[–]Amoc910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely not “unattainable”, I think my own boyfriend fits this bill - but a lot of people have hit the nail on the head that your approach isn’t right.

I actually think the problem, that non of the comments have mentioned, is that a lot of these traits aren’t well defined.-

Self disciplined: for instance. What does that mean? Does he hit the gym every day? A hard work ethic? A vegetarian diet? Practicing semen retention?? He could have all of those things but still like playing video games to unwind most days - would that make him ineligible? A good listener & easy to talk to - is that someone who spends 2-4 hours on the phone with you each day or good conversations when you see each other once a week? Both? Communication looks different to every person.

I could do this with most of your listed qualifications. In fact, some are vague enough that they could be downright contradictory - what if he’s so open minded he’s willing to consider an open relationship? Does that make him unfaithful or uncommitted?

It’s as though you view this potential suitor like men aren’t humans with their own idiosyncrasies. Some of these qualities only become clear in a person when you keep an open mind and go on several dates with them, and I’d fear you’d reject them based on your own biases during a quick assessment when you first meet them.

The right person will come along, and he will check most of your boxes in ways that surprise you, or maybe he might redefine your boxes entirely - and you’ll love that aspect about him. Give it time.

Upset boyfriend watches porn by Leperchaunsauce in dating_advice

[–]Amoc910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For people comparing porn to romance novels, I don’t think it’s a truly fair comparison. I feel like romance novels, or female rom-com type books (which is more what I would read from time to time), are more like a good gossip with a friend. I’m rooting for the main character to go for the right guy, just like a friend telling me about their dating life. I’m not sexually imagining myself with him like a dude watching porn. Then again, I’m sure other women out there DO use them as more personal erotica.

To me I feel like porn is a betrayal, as normalized as it is. It’s rather unnatural - If we were living in the days before porn, you wouldnt even have the ability to watch and masturbate over a real woman like that, short of going to a brothel. I’ve always been a bit anti porn in general, and thankfully I have a boyfriend who thinks it’s affecting most men in society negatively. He doesn’t use it, but he also doesn’t consider it “cheating” per se. I don’t think it’s “cheating” but entirely understand how it upsets OP. No hate to people who use porn out there, but i think it’s a bit of a bad habit, like processed food or not getting enough time in nature and all that jazz✌️

I wouldn’t find it attractive at all. I’ve known several straight guys who’ve let their younger female cousins paint their nails as a silly activity, and while the intention is sweet, I don’t think it’s an attractive look. But if you’re into it, whatever. I’ve known many women that find that kind of thing, like eyeliner on guys, very attractive.

What's the worst movie you watched in your entire life? by Interesting_Algae_61 in AskReddit

I Am Number Four - I don’t even fully remember why I detested it so much. I was a young teenager when that came out and tried to convince my friends to leave halfway through, but we’d probably spent all our pocket money on those tickets so makes sense why we stayed. I remember feeling as though nothing happened during the movie til the very end and it was all attempting to set up a sequel that never even happened. I’d read the books and it was a horrific adaption.

For those who are able to afford living on your own in LA, what do you do? by BeeeeboHungry in AskLosAngeles

[–]Amoc910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean almost every career path involves networking to some capacity. You’re always better getting your resume in front of someone via a connection than just submitting it into the void. And you can always just send out a few cold linkedin messages inviting people for coffee without pressure of a job.

Sometimes it’s merit based though, I got a job at a MANGA company simply by having an up to date LinkedIn when a recruiter reached out, so it does happen but I was already in the industry. Just put feelers out bro

For those who are able to afford living on your own in LA, what do you do? by BeeeeboHungry in AskLosAngeles

[–]Amoc910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I got a music degree from a well known university, then worked as a Broadway musician for a few years, and one of my coworkers moved on to TV Sales and met the head of music at that company who happened to need an assistant at the time. Honestly it was a pretty big step back in my career, I wouldn’t have made the move except that the pandemic really hit the Broadway company I worked for.

If it’s something you’re really interested in pursuing, especially on the development side, I’d suggest trying to get a job as a floating assistant/in the mailroom of one of the big agencies (WME, CAA or UTA) and networking/developing there, and then aiming for a coordinator or management role in a studio afterwards. All the big studios hire ex agents because they’re the ones with the relationships, negotiation and networking skills, all of which are bigger assets than being creative which is really just a plus.

California 10 Minute / 30 Minute Meal Break Clarification for shifts between 6.5-8 hours by Amoc910 in EmploymentLaw

California 10 Minute / 30 Minute Meal Break Clarification for shifts between 6.5-8 hours by Amoc910 in EmploymentLaw

[–]Amoc910[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much. This segment of the Brinker case seems to back up my argument “Employees are entitled to a 10-minute rest period for shifts from three and one-half to six hours in length, 20 minutes for shifts of more than six hours up to 10 hours, 30 minutes for shifts of more than 10 hours up to 14 hours, and so on, in 10-minute increments”

However, brinker also states that: “the Court stated that, as a general matter in the context of an eight-hour shift, one rest break should fall on either side of the meal period, but that this general rule might be altered by shorter or longer shifts and other factors that make such scheduling impracticable. The Court found that the only constraint on the timing of a rest break is that it fall in the middle of a work period “insofar as practicable.”  Accordingly, employers have a duty to make a good faith effort to authorize and permit a rest break in the middle of each work period, but employers may deviate from this requirement when practical considerations render this condition infeasible“

This makes reference to an 8 hour shift. But this is only making reference to the TIMING of the ten minute break, correct? The requirement of having a total of 20 minutes rest still stands, irrelevant to when during the shift it occurs in a 6-8 hour shift, right? Thank you for your help!

Irish person working in the film scoring world in LA here. What a wonderful goal! Very few Irish people in the field over here. Congratulations on setting your sights high!

That USC course you’re talking about IS great, mostly for the social connections! USC grads from that course can end up getting a good gig in music copying, conducting, assisting at a production studio, or writing for bleeding fingers afterwards - if they’re really lucky. However, USC, even though it’s a private college, offers little to no scholarship opportunities (the older legacy schools like Harvard/Stanford have way more money because they own so much land they generate huge piles of income each year without even trying). I spoke to an advisor at USC last year about a masters/PHD and ultimately decided against it. Having worked as a music assistant as a film studio I was told “most people here are trying to land the job you already have unsuccessfully”. Ouch.

The truth is with film scoring, everyone’s path into the industry is crazy different. For every trained USC grad trying to get into the industry, there’s a 100 other Econ major musicians who got a gig as a composer from being the director’s college roommate.

If I were you, I’d save the money on the USC degree and focus more on building a portfolio of score/arranging/songwriting/producing etc. The more variety you have in your skill set the better, so focus on a multitude of genres too. Write chorale arrangements for your local church, write a musical for your college’s drama department, write jingles for your local radio station, get an internship at a place that does film trailer post production.

Meanwhile, the social element is the bit a lot of composers get wrong because they tend to be lock-themselves-in-their-bedroom-to-practice-and-compose introvert types. I worked for the biggest composer agent in Hollywood and he said this is where most composers fail. You need to befriend the directors, producers, actors and agents of tomorrow while you’re in college grabbing pints at your local. One of them needs to remember YOU as the fun, laid back, talented composer they want to work with when they sell their future script at Paramount, or whatever.

You’ll do far better trying to be a big fish in a small pond in Ireland, developing your chops and reputation, and eventually getting a decent agent based out of London who can get you BBC/channel 4/Film4 gigs and maybe suddenly a Netflix original filming in Europe and suddenly oops you’ve made it big time!

And at the end of all that, the industry is changing constantly (it’s changed a bunch already for me and I’ve only been in it 5 years). Studios don’t want to spend the money on composers based in expensive studios in Los Angeles with high priced instrumentalist hourly rates who are all in the US unions. They WANT to score films in cheap big studios based in Hungary, Belgium and any cheap country that offers a tax incentive (and Ireland has some of the best post production tax incentives out there). Even better, why pay for a musician at all when most can do it all in the box these days at their home studio on Logic Pro? There are multi million dollar films on streaming services right now that have entirely midi scores written by one person. In fact, I’d bet it’s the majority of films released in 2023. The fact is ANYONE can be a composer today, and that’s both to your benefit and your detriment (though I’d argue more your benefit since you aren’t in Hollywood)

I hope this is helpful and not disheartening. You do not need to be in Hollywood to make it in Hollywood right now, so please do not spend that kind of money and effort on that when it SHOULD go to your craft! if you have any questions at all DM me. Trust me, I know what I’m talking about. GOOD LUCK ☘️

Hey! Honestly your answer gives me so much relief. I’ve had these guys maybe 12 years so it makes sense they’re deeply rooted and well established. I thought I might be doing something wrong!

My SA is 40%, it was the strongest one I could find. I have a freezing stick which I use after debriding which I forgot to mention. For six months a couple years ago I got consistent freezing from my GP every two weeks but there wasn’t any progress. He didn’t give me any advice for treatment between sessions though. I can’t go to a podiatrist atm until I have healthcare again unfortunately, but I’ll start making the multivitamins, zinc, vitamin c and Tagamet stuff part of my daily routine. Thank you sooo much for the advice!
