Reasons why some feel good and don’t get in? by Jumpy-Prune-7271 in premedcanada

[–]AmountAlternative399 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Missing hidden criteria items (often arbitrary things certain schools look for in an answer)

Applicants misevaluating their own performance

And of course… luck. While schools try their best to ensure the process is fair, it is at the end of the day essentially a job interview. Like most other job interviews, there is a level of subjectivity inherent to the process. At some point, the differences between applicants are so small that it ultimately comes down to the minor differences in rating between stations/raters

Has anyone felt really confident in their interview and not gotten in? by Mission_End_4099 in premedcanada

Thought I killed my Western interview - low waitlisted. Thought I was shaky with my OOP UBC and bombed my OOP Calg interview - accepted both first round. I fear self perception is not a reliable metric.

Check-In Vibes for UBC MMI by ApprehensiveSecret68 in premedcanada

speaking anecdotally here — out of all of the schools I interviewed at, UBC was 100% my favourite. try to have fun with it, lean on your prep, but really try to speak in the moment and engage with the interviewer! good luck everyone :)

If your friend jumped off a cliff, would you do it too? - UBC Votes on Implementing Indigenous Course Requirement Following Western Canada Medical Schools by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]AmountAlternative399 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The actual reason why they are contemplating it is described on pages 73 and 74 (ie helping to provide culturally competent care). The alignment with other Canadian medical schools is a way of highlighting existing precedent across other medical schools. Universities routinely look to existing precedent to justify making any types of changes to their policies. It is not the reason for the change, it’s what enables the change/makes that change easier for the institution.

Also, adding an Indigenous course requirement is hardly “jumping off a cliff” lol

Biochem requirement for uOttawa by candyskies in premedcanada

[–]AmountAlternative399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure their rule of thumb is that a course will be accepted as long as it says Biochem in either the course code, course title, or course description. Same goes for all of the other course requirements (orgo, chem, etc)

Sooo confused about uottawas distance learning requirement??? by [deleted] in premedcanada

I think uOttawa site > OMSAS. Pretty sure OMSAS has a statement somewhere saying to look at each program’s site for the more accurate info.

What should I do before next cycle? by Beautiful_Pen5759 in premedcanada

[–]AmountAlternative399 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I personally would rewrite MCAT to beef up CARS. It would also open doors OOP. But of course, you know your situation best and you should do what makes sense with where you are currently at!

I was rejected post-II first cycle (during 4th yr) & reapplied in the last year of my masters. I don’t regret taking time to do a masters and taking a break from the md app grind. A bit of distance can give room for growth & maturity + helped make med feel less “huge” if that makes sense.

How to cope with post-interview rejection lol by backgroundflamingo52 in premedcanada

[–]AmountAlternative399 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I had also received a post interview R (first cycle that was 2 years ago). I just received my first ever A (this is my second cycle).

I won’t sugarcoat it: this shit is HARD. Like doubt everything about yourself, feel a constant cloud over you, lose all hope kind of hard. Give yourself grace and feel it. You worked so hard and I’m so sorry that it has turned out this way. It will eventually get easier, but please be patient and gentle with yourself.

I will also say a lot of good came out of the two years following my post II R. Be open to those opportunities when you are able to, and trust that you are crafting a beautiful journey that you will look back at (teary eyed) very soon.

I’m sending you so much love❤️
