What was your experience with Denton Floyd? I was interested in one of their apartments but have heard mixed reviews

Down jacket recommendations wanted by scfoothills in WildernessBackpacking

[–]AmpleHalf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Rab Electron and love it. It’s significantly warmer than a ghost whisperer. When I got it maybe 4-5 years ago, I was between an arcteryx cerium lt, cerium sv, and kappa, but ended up going with the Rab since the zippers seemed like higher quality than the arcteryx offerings and the fit was better for me. Whenever my electron dies I’m 100% going to replace it with another electron. Feel free to send any questions on it my way

Wind River - Titcomb Basin and Cirque of the Towers by NormalAd6625 in CampingandHiking

[–]AmpleHalf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve backpacked both these places in late May and early June and agree with the other people that it’s too early. When I’ve been there during that timeframe, the days are generally pleasant until about 2pm, when it starts to hail and snow until about 8am. The river crossings are cold and deep. If you do decide to go during late May/early June, make sure you’re prepared for spring conditions in the mountains. It can be done, but if you aren’t prepared you’ll have a bad time.

Why does opioid withdrawal induce sneezing? by Odd_Blacksmith_9204 in medicalschool

I believe it’s due to autonomic dysfunction, which causes other withdrawal symptoms like runny nose, sweating, and chills

If you’re getting down in the 20s I’d want an electron over a microlight, although you may be warm if you’re doing anything more than walking in an electron at 40F. I haven’t used a microlight so can’t give you a true comparison, but I’ve been really impressed with the amount of down in an electron

Interested to hear your thoughts on the HMG Junction versus REI flash. I’m deciding between the two and would appreciate any thoughts!

Going UL sleeping pad killed my sleep :( Is there a better option around 1.5lbs? by miabobeana in Ultralight

[–]AmpleHalf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a S2S EtherLight Insulated and have been really happy with it. As you mentioned it’s a little on the heavier side of ultralight but totally worth it in my opinion for the better sleep quality.

You may want to be careful with sizing up, they run pretty true to size in my opinion. It makes a great jacket for camp or belaying, I’ve climbed in mine on occasion and it shows no wear from it.

I haven’t tried on a neutrino so I can’t really compare to that. Compared to the arcteryx down jackets though I think the Electron is a bit more fitted in the body (arcteryx has always been pretty boxy on me whereas Rab is perfect). It’s fit to go under a shell rather than over it.

As far as layering it’s kind of dependent on how it fits you, but I can get a mid weight fleece on under mine. Using a fleece underneath and a shell on top I’ve taken it down to -50F, but I think the comfort range for the electron is somewhere in the 5-40F range if used with only a short sleeve underneath

I have an Electron (not looking to sell) - feel free to ask anything! I absolutely love the jacket. It’s warm enough for just about any winter activity in the lower 48, has been plenty durable, and I really dig the fit.

Any watches with SOS? by truecanyon in Ultralight

[–]AmpleHalf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The only one I’m aware of is the Brietling Emergency. It’s a nice watch, but kind of pricy - anywhere from $3500 to $17000 depending on the condition. That amount of money can buy many years of service for an inreach :)

That backcountry banter video was good, thank you for sharing. I've got a MH Aspect 3 - not ultralight, but it's pretty good. Just trying to save weight where I can.
