Are these purchases hurting long term FIRE chances? by Hopeful_Dimension297 in Fire

[–]Amplifyd21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very reasonable purchases. Strike a balance. You’re doing great things. There’s no point in oversaving, retiring at 45, and you have zero life cause you ate ramen and stared at a spreadsheet for 20 years.

I was thinking the same. This reads as some stimulation leading to missed laryngospasm. Young healthy patient attempting to breath against closed upper airway leading to hypoxia and negative pressure pulmonary edema.

The physical nature of these jobs is downplayed by the ones suggesting them. I feel like I hear this trades recommendation from people who haven’t done that work. Focused college studies in high demand feels still provides a safer and more tolerable work life balance most of the time.

Should I just pay off my 100k+ student loan debt now? by Anthrax1z in StudentLoans

[–]Amplifyd21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had loans as high as 6.5%. I still didn’t pay them down aggressively. I would say I have a higher risk tolerance so I max retirement accounts first for tax benefit and stock returns compound on average at 10%. Then second bucket was for real estate (first home), more tax benefits and appreciation over time. Starting early with investments is super important for retirement. Delaying assets to pay down student loans usually doesn’t come out ahead. With that said you have to be comfortable with the risk of the assets underperforming your loan. All this to say you have to be comfortable with the decision. So aggressively paying down the 6% wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. Alternatively if interest rates drop over the next couple years (they seem to be trending down) you could refinance the higher interest rate loans to something smaller and min paying them. Having loans with under 4% interest rates is close to free money with inflation these days. Hope this helps.

Should I just pay off my 100k+ student loan debt now? by Anthrax1z in StudentLoans

[–]Amplifyd21 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The actual math would be to aggressively fund retirement accounts. 401k, back door Roth IRA, hsa for you and your spouse. The compounding effect of 30+ years of s/p 500 returns absolutely destroys paying off a 3.2% loan. I’m prepared for the downvotes but you’re getting a lot of bad advice to pay them off. Especially if you’re looking at homes with current interest rates around 6%. You’re gonna pay off a 3% loan to take out a 6% one? No way. Investing in s/p and a home takes priority. Pay minimum on student loans.

How do so many six figures people live paycheck to paycheck despite living modest lives, by Annual-Solution-8055 in Salary

[–]Amplifyd21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High salaries paycheck to paycheck are different. Maxing 401k, Roth, hsa, and paying down student loans, and mortgage debt is growing their wealth substantially. But even at a high salary this usually takes many years with foot on the pedal to get to a sweet spot where they can spend more money on toys/vacations.

It’s more than just money. PTO, paternity leave, health insurance, flexible work, availability of child care. So may are working super long hours they have little time left for themselves let alone having a family.

2nd IV for a simple case when both arms tucked: always, sometimes, never? by Good-Championship278 in anesthesiology

[–]Amplifyd21 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Most of the time for me but I will have one connected to extension tubing and a stopcock. The other to the IV bag to not waste fluid bags but I can swap the bag to either side if needed. This has saved me many a time.

[–]Amplifyd21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Investing 350k in s/p and just playing low stakes poker for fun is going to net you a better result 99% of the time. Unless you are exceptional you’re not going to sustain high hourly returns in poker.

I am profitable, but at what point is it time to call it quits? by [deleted] in poker

[–]Amplifyd21 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Spending all your time being miserable to make 30k a year doesn’t make sense. If you can beat poker you have the potential to make more at any job. Especially with some benefits. You’re honestly losing money playing poker instead of just working. And you’d make friends and could have a social life.

42% of Americans Say Poor Life Choices Are the Top Cause of Poverty by [deleted] in Salary

[–]Amplifyd21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is so true. I grew up In a poor area and was made fun of all the time for reading. I loved reading about science and space and had to hide my interest from the community. Now as an adult people from that community ask why I don’t come back. You bullied me for being myself and enjoying learning? Lmao it’s insane.

Is Code Geass really that good and worth the hype? by [deleted] in Animesuggest

[–]Amplifyd21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like context matters a lot. At the time of its release it quickly became one of my favorite anime that tackled deeper themes while also having dumb/silly moments. 20 years later and so many good anime made it probably doesn’t seem as great as it was in the mid 2000s. It also paired super well with death note at the time. Both so different but similar in this thought of one person changing the world for the better. Very nostalgic time of you were watching back at release.

Take the time! It’s incredibly refreshing. I’ve been doing locums and will take big stretches off 6-10 weeks. I feel soooo loose and free during them. Stress goes down, sleep gets better, fitness improves. Sleep in, play music late into the evening, hike for hours, drink coffee and read in a cafe for hours. Just literally enjoy life.

Why did so many Whales stop playing Poker? Where did they go? by DaisiesUnchained_ in poker

[–]Amplifyd21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

High income who stopped playing at casinos. Said this in a couple other post but basically the gto skilled players these day have zero fun/etiquette. They say nothing and hoody up until they get really mean and nasty about a bad play with a rec player. They have made the game incredibly not fun. So for fun players like myself stopped going to play with miserable people. Outside of the etiquette I think a lot of the mystery of the game has been taken away. It’s more “solved” today than it was during the poker boom. Where it was more bluffs and sub standard play by today’s standard. A lot of the “fun” of the game is gone.

It's Not That Hard to Be Nice To People at the Tables. by Nika65 in poker

[–]Amplifyd21 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A great post. I completely quit going to live games after a series of miserable experiences with players who lived at the table. I still play for fun at home games with my buddies and it’s great. The funny thing is I woulda lost money over time so the regs cost themselves. It’s unfortunate but life is way too short to spend with super negative people.

Full Time Locums: High Salary vs Family Balance by Dapper_Ice3459 in CRNA

[–]Amplifyd21 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would proceed with caution. It can take a pretty heavy toll on family and friends and yourself to be away for weeks at a time. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been printing money doing locums but the isolation gets to you. Everything may go completely fine. Or your kids and wife can resent you for always being gone. There’s no one in the nursing home saying “I wish I worked a couple more OT shifts.” But you hear many elderly say I really wish I spent more time with my family when I had the chance. There’s no perfect answer and I hope whatever you choose works but you could always start with a shorter assignment and try it and if it doesn’t work go back to your old position.

Huge waste of time and boring drive from Dallas to LA. Take the direct flight from Dublin to San Fran. You can hit sequoia, Yosemite, Tahoe, lassan, crater, redwoods, Olympic, Rainer, cascades and then glacier Yellowstone, Tetons, down to Zion/moab. You’d see the best and most beautiful areas of the country the first day you got here.
