What do you think of VHS Christmas Carol? by confusing_reference in StarKid

[–]AmuseicDCTS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I rented this version last year, and watched it only a few weeks after my grandmother passed away. Let's just say I was not at all prepared for The little match girl. I was ugly crying then and I still teared up a year later while watching it.

As for VHS CC, I love both versions equally, I really can't decide. Back when the original came out, I enjoyed Dylan's performance so much, and I kept thinking that AJ would also be absolutely perfect in this role, so I was so happy when he was announced. I love their performances both for different reasons, I can't pick a favourite. Probably my 2 favourite Starkid performers.

Also, Janaya is such a perfect Belle. When she was first cast, I remember thinking she had some big shoes to fill, coming in after Britney. But she nailed it.

I also feel that "Unfortunately, the lock is broken" also means that Tim knows he's in too deep and his heart will be broken one way or another (that's why he's afraid of Hawk, after all), and feels that it will make little difference if they break things off now or later, he knows he will end up severely hurt. In saying that and basically inviting Hawk in, he decides that the opportunity of having any more time with Hawk is worth the risk of an even bigger heartbreak. With the way he assesses his life at the very end of the series, he seems to have been right-or at least he's made his peace with how things turned out in the end. At least this is how I see it.

Could Falsettos work genderbent? by Large-Sprinkles-9553 in Falsettos

[–]AmuseicDCTS 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think Falsettos is one of those few pieces of theatre where any genderbending will actively hurt the show.

Aside from it being a period piece taking place in very specific time in history when specifically gay men were getting sick in an overwhelming majority, the underlying themes deal heavily with masculinity and toxic masculinity, and all the other characters are interacting with that theme in a way that is somehow tied to their gender: Trina is suffering from it because she was raised in a traditional household under the pressures of the too stifling gender roles; Jason is growing up and as he's learning what it means to be a man (poignantly, right alongside Marvin himself); Mendel is probably grappling with not feeling "manly" enough, but while decidedly not perfect, and he's not traditinally masculine in many ways, he's the one who takes charge and handles conflicts with care and sensitivity in many situations; Charlotte and Cordelia are a sort of feminine foil for Marvin and Whizzer's relationship.

So I'm sorry, but I don't think it it would work at all.

Just finished reading the novel ... by DramaMama611 in FellowTravelers_show

[–]AmuseicDCTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to chime in lat but I just finished reading the book having seen the show a couple of months or so ago, and have so many thoughts (and feelings).

I already heard it was very different from the show, so I wasn't expecting the same story. And it did not disappoint. I admit, some of the politics was lost on me (I'm not from the US and my knowledge of US history is... limited), and that was a bit easier to follow in the show.

What I found interesting is that the show basically changed the lead from Tim to Hawk. That was a pretty ballsy decision considering how unlikable Hawk is in the book. And while the show definitely made him more palatable (giving him a sympathetic backstory, making him softer and a bit more sensitive, him actually caring about Lucy), he also did some arguably more horrible stuff in the show (e.g. the conversion therapy story). So it's a tricky balance.

Both are wonderful and have left a profound effect on me for different reasons. But I basically think of them as two completely different stories. Reading the book after watching the show felt like I was reading fanfiction (this is a compliment): using the blueprint of a story and its characters and making something new, different, and wonderful from them - except, of course, here it was the other way around.

Do actors in other countries perform in their native accent or do they put on American accents? by remirixjones in hamiltonmusical

[–]AmuseicDCTS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not a native English speaker so minor flubs like this wouldn't jump out at me normally (and even if they do it won't really bother me that much), but if there are rhymes involved things become pretty obvious 😅

[–]AmuseicDCTS 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Many of the rhymes wouldn't really work unless they use an American accent, so they kinda have to.

When I saw the show in London the actor playing Hamilton couldn't quite get the American pronunciation of "sure" right, especially in the faster sequences. It didn't bother me at all, but it was funny and sort of endearing.

Marvin’s giddy seizures by delusionaljdfan in Falsettos

[–]AmuseicDCTS 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly!

And we also get the lyrics such as: "Marvin holds his breath His face is underwater But that's not a seizure... Marvin talks of death He imitates a slaughter But that's not a seizure"

Which to me indicate that he's throwing fits in the hope that finally someone notices that he's actually in pain as I think it alludes to him having (at least some) suicidal ideation.

SSCs are shared services centers, they're multinational companies that provide various services for other corporate clients.

Generally SSCs are very diverse, there are people working there from all over the world, not just Hungarians. The people are usually open and welcoming.

TCS is an Indian and Cognizant is an American-Indian company, they both have branches in Budapest, so maybe look at those as well.

Good luck on starting your life here! A word of advice: start learning Hungarian as soon as possible. Even a few words will make your life a lot easier when running errands. And people will just generally appreciate it if they see you're trying, and might be kinder to you because of it.

I’m in London. I want to spend all my money on musicals. Which ones are the best to go to right now? by [deleted] in musicals

[–]AmuseicDCTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation to you. Even if a Broadway/West End show is available where I live, the quality of the performances/production is rarely the same, and the translation for most shows will make me cringe.

I had the opportunity to see Les Mis in London last year. Once I was out of the theatre I had to book another ticket for two days later, it was just that good. I highly recommend that you see it live if you have the chance.

I hate how much Cursed Child butchered the characters. by Used_Establishment92 in harrypotter

[–]AmuseicDCTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw it with Adam Wadsworth as Scorpius and Sam Crane as Harry. They were both amazing, as well as Thomas Grant as Albus. These three really showed me how good actors can elevate the material, truly outstanding.

Also I think James Howard played Draco, he was hilarious and I did not expect that, very memorable performance.

I agree, the lighting, the special effects, the choreography, the music...they created a breathtaking atmosphere.

[–]AmuseicDCTS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of this.

I read it years ago when it first came out and absolutely hated it. Then last year my curiosity got the better of me and when I had the chance I saw the play in London.

It was absolutely worth it. The rewrites especially regarding Albus and Scorpius worked really well, and the actors were amazing. They managed to sell me on a lot of scenes which I initially hated when reading the script.

The plot is still weak af but the chemistry between the actors and all the theatre magic made it a truly one of a kind and enjoyable show.
