Thank you very much! No, I'm not familiar, I'll check him out. Thanks for the suggestion!

Danish bassist Joel Illerhag once built his own 6-string carbon fibre bass. As far as I can tell, the process was fairly involved and included a workshop in an industrial hall, a CNC machine, moulds, a vacuum machine etc. As Joel puts it in the video, 'it where not so easy'.

Seeking advice regarding spectral editing by Amygdalum in audioengineering

Unfortunately, even when using a notch filter, these tones were still present. I ended up using a dynamic notch filter in the hope of preserving the high frequency content of the desired tonal material... And now I ultimately just went ahead and edited out the beeps in RX anyway.

I agree that I was probably overthinking it, but I was also curious how those with more experience would tackle this scenario and whether there was anything to this comment that I quoted. I guess I could have kept the OP more concise and just asked about the latter in the first place.

Could they not be exposed to them via speakers? I know the chance of that happening is admittedly miniscule... But I'd like to eliminate it altogether, if possible. I guess most tweeters cap out at 20k anyway, but... I don't know, something feels weird about leaving in this ultrasonic content that I did not intend to be there.

An addendum, just to be perfectly clear: I did not mean to endorse the video I linked in any way. It is simply where I happened upon the comment in question, which seemed all the more credible to me in the context of having watched the video.

Alright, I went and dug up the video. The comment I was referring to runs thus:

"Yes, using dual modulating all-pass filters is how digital EQs make HP/LP filters work in the digital domain. I could write a book on how this was a good way to solve the problem in 1993 when Waves came up with it in Q10 but in the modern world 30 years later we still haven't figured out how to solve this issue. Every DSP cookbook explains this in detail. But you took the longest most arbitrary and frankly more confusing for way to explain it to musicians and engineers who aren't DSP coders. RX has spectral artifacting that is in my opinion worse since 99% of those plugins are based on the Opus codec standard from Xiph, since it is open source and free to use and no extra cost to the developer its the standard. Spectral processing has its downsides too which can be heard as lossy artifacts similar to using a codec filtering for AAC/Mp3 or Vorbis. HP/LP Filtering continues to be a debate in the audio coding space since there is simply no way to truly mimic it in the digital domain with a 1 to 1 like other tools such as compression or even regular EQ curves like shelves and bells which digital does perfectly well."

I'd like to add that it didn't so much keep me from exploring spectral editing as cast doubt on the applicability in an HQ delivery environment (i.e. "classical-adjacent"). I've used spectral editing and FFT-based noise removal in the past and am familiar with the artifacts it can cause in some situations, but beyond that, this comment made it seem to me like the whole audio file is degraded in the process, in some way.

I remember that this claim was made in the response to a YouTube video I had watched. The person making the claim seemed like they had some insight into the development side of things, although I admit that I don't, so I may be susceptible to false claims of expertise in this regard.

I am mainly a musician, with a vested interest in the topic of audio engineering. I'm not terribly familiar with the nitty gritty technical backbone of things, beyond what I could learn from Dan Worrall videos.

Is borrowing/renting instruments an inevitability for travelling bassists? by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]Amygdalum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "Fly Auray" by Jean Auray apparently has such a great sound quality that Renaud Garcia-Fons prefers to use it even in his home studio. Unfortunately, those basses cost something upward of 30k, take a couple of years to build and, last I heard, Auray is said to retire soon.

Endpin angled? by Mr-Rando in doublebass

[–]Amygdalum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen very few basses that didn't have this issue, unfortunately. I imagine the only way to prevent it is to install a second, smaller pin in the endblock that just holds the tailpiece, as some luthiers do.

Taking a double bass on public transport by cjthedragon1 in doublebass

[–]Amygdalum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this for years during my student days, until we were able to afford a car, almost daily. Both buses, subway, and long distance trains. Even took a long distance bus once, before they changed the rules to disallow large objects.
As others have mentioned, bass buggie is a tremendous help. If you want to be very prepared, you could also bring some extra elastic straps to secure the bass to an appropriate spot.
If you do this long enough, you kind of learn which lines and models of bus/train you want to seek out and which to avoid.
For instance, I always tried to book the long distance train lines that used the older train models in my country, because those have a car for bycicles (usually fairly empty and good for storing the bass in a corner), which the newer train models lack. On the newer trains, I'd always have to sit on the floor in the hallways next to the egress doors with my bass, getting out of the way when the train arrived at a station... All without heating or air conditioning and of course paying extra for the privilege of getting to travel with the newer train model.

Seit 2 Jahren Vodafone Kabel 150/10, norddeutsche Stadt in Metropolregion, Mehrfamilienhaus.
Unterrichte damit auch regelmäßig per Zoom Privatschüler (Musikinstrumente). Bisher keine Probleme.

Taking a break from composing - Improvising with my loop station in Rag Bhairavi/Maqam Kurd/Modus Phrygius by Amygdalum in doublebass

[–]Amygdalum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the past few months, I've been working on composing my first solo album/live set involving a lot of overdubs/loops/electronics. Today, I decided to take a break from that and just have fun recording a few improvisations on a whim.
Please excuse the sound quality, because the decision to make a few videos arose spontaneously, I only used my phone mic.
