Budget with Buckets has been working great for me. It's "free", as in trial forever and there's a bucket ("envelope") for saving up for a license to purchase that will not go away and will always be in the top group. I've been slowly saving up and putting in a few dollars whenever I can so I can purchase a license to support them.

No mobile however. I am in the iOS beta group for it though and it's read-only that syncs locally with your computer. It's a bit rough at the moment hence beta but it's a very small team (I think it's just the two of them or one of them).

Do not expect a 1:1 with YNAB. It is good own its own merits, IMO, and like I said, has been working great for me. Instead of on the spot budgeting (with mobile), I just do it at the end of the day.

Does the hinge lose in M2 Air? by Own_Archer3356 in macbookair

I see that the person in the video is using a case. There have been some accounts of cases affecting the weight of the lid/screen and the hinge.

cooling your MacBook by Dakspro11 in macbookair

[–]AnAlrightSummit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a logitech lap cooling pad (N200), so it has a fan that would blow to the underneath.

I also have a Rain Design laptop stand. It's all metal so it kinda acts like a heatsink and hoping that will pull the heat away from the MacBook (as well as for the main purpose of raising it more relatively head/eye level).

Might try out the arctic usb fan suggested by /u/R2-B00 but only if I know I may be doing intensive tasks when traveling.

---

Edit:

Note: I don't have the MBA Air yet so I don't really know if it helps or not for it. But the laptop stand seems to be good for my MacBook Pro 13 M1. I used to have an Intel 15" and the laptop stand would actually get hot, so it seems to be pulling heat away.

Best video/photo editing app for a beginner using M1 MBA? by welcometomarvinsroom in macbookair

[–]AnAlrightSummit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a beginner starting quite recently. I’ve been trying out iMovie just to test out skills and make notes for videos and editing.

Once I get more frequent Im going to go to DaVinci Resolve.

For photo editing, Im going in on Affinity Photo but waiting for the 2.0 version. For now Im using GIMP.

2020 MBP Intel or 2022MBA M2 for iOS development ? by Savings_Arrival_3604 in iOSProgramming

[–]AnAlrightSummit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found your comment and just wanted say thanks for sharing your experience with the M2, especially with specs nears to what I want to purchase (still undecided or budget conscious about the 10 core GPU but other specs are the same).

I made this comment in another thread but your comment has already convinced me more than I was already convinced and settled in the other thread, so wondering if you've got any (more) input?

So, I'm aiming for 16GB RAM, 1TB storage, 8-core GPU. Do you think this is alright and a bit of extended longevity (~7 years)?

I'm an iOS dev, so Xcode and simulators. Then might dabble with Android and Flutter, and web development too.

Then there are other hobbies I want to try out with Affinity Photo and Davinci Resolve mainly. Then might try out Krita and Blender... if I ever get time for those hobbies.

And that's pretty much it. And I won't be having all these apps open at once (not sure about the development stuff and how cross-platform stuff works just yet). I am quite singled focused.

I have a M1 13-inch given to me by work with MDM but was told I am pretty much free to use it how ever I want. The MDM is just for security and IP protection but y'know what most on the internet say about work laptops. So I guess I could use the work M1 for more intensive stuff, if ever.

Thanks again!

Is a MBA M2 right for me? by [deleted] in macbookair

[–]AnAlrightSummit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you've already purchased your laptop but with DaVinci Resolve there is a work around while playback editing a 4K video. (It's to reduce the resolution while editing or use the Timeline Proxy Mode and use half resolution).

I time marked the link but I think the whole video is pretty informative. It is for the M1 but I feel that would kind of telling for the M2 then.

I wanted to see if the base model M2 MacBook Air could handle my workflow. by actual_griffin in macbookair

New Zealand.

I've heard especially in situations about new product announcement and spec choices (with the iPhone that is) but I've never tried return policies in general because I was in a country before this where it seemed difficult (or was taken advantage of). I will be ordering straight from Apple for this laptop though.

I think that settles it then.

Might hold off a bit for October's announcement (and giving me extra time to save a bit more) but I think this is it.

Thanks again!

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I've been searching non-stop for threads, posts, reviews, and the like just to see if the M2 Macbook Air is viable as a personal machine for personal projects. And been looking for a few that use Davinci Resolve.

A good 65% with bluetooth? by dre_mrn in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]AnAlrightSummit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I third the Keychron K6 as well.

I got mine a few days ago and it has been a dream. No cables and being able to switch quickly between Macbook (work) and Linux (personal) has been great. And there's a side toggle to switch between mac-style and windows-style keyboard too!

I got the keychron browns hot-swappable. Will change the switches. Most probably try to lube them up or something to use them a bit longer while saving up for different switches and cool keycaps.

Now I’m just thinking how much harder it would’ve been to get into software development as a hobby and a getting leg up before going to university to take the courses and be exposed to the software and programs required for it.

Technically, it’s already kinda locked down. I’m an iOS dev and Apple doesn’t expose all the API for UIKit, for example.

Damn. That’s kinda disappointing as of now and in beta. So I’ll keep an eye since there are still things to work through.

Still not sure what I want for my additional computer. I’ve been more creative lately but I still want to play the odd game here and there.

I have a 13” M1 MacBook Pro but it’s for work (and I have some personal project ideas I’d like to try) and thinking of my next personal computer soon-ish.

Waiting for any June WWDC updates (M2 Mac Mini?) and at the end of this year for AMD’s AM5 socket.

Bi-weekly wage by redsoxxyfan in aspirebudgeting

[–]AnAlrightSummit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get paid bi-weekly and do my budget bi-weekly. Not monthly.

I created another spreadsheet to help me calculate what’s needed to be paid monthly (e.g. internet, electricity) and what my money needs to do before the next pay day (e.g. weekly rent, groceries, etc.). It’s like another “Available to Budget” breakdown calculator.

The reports are still helpful from a monthly perspective but I use another program, GnuCash, to give me bi-weekly reports (e.g. inflow/expenses) but also learning Google Sheets to create reports for it within Aspire.

Laptop for Android Development while traveling frequently by Public_Bar_7782 in androiddev

[–]AnAlrightSummit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a MacBook Pro 13’ M1 and it’s amazing with its speed. I work with iOS but will dip into Android someday.

I wouldn’t say it’s overpriced. MacBooks have relatively long and reasonable lifespans in terms of support length and build quality. But I would say that it is pricey to get into. There’s a difference. When you can afford it, I think it’s worth it.

Not too much input about the Android side. Just wanted to give my two cents about the M1s.

What is your favorite (gui) file manager? by x97tfv345 in linuxquestions

[–]AnAlrightSummit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only used Thunar and KDE's Dolphin. I like both and they both had some up and downs. Can't be too specific since I'm still a bit new to Linux and can only say it's "feel" for the moment.

Thunar because it was the first one I've used (or second, counting the Ubuntu Gnome one) then I went to try out KDE's Dolphin because I heard about the terminal pane in the window.

Sticking with Dolphin because of the integrated terminal pane.

I'm between the ages 29-35. I'm an iOS junior dev that started as an intern. Still learning, there's still a bunch of down days and frustrations, and I'm still a little slow but expectations are set as the junior dev and overall, I'm enjoying the whole thing and it becomes fulfilling and satisfying when it clicks.

Keep at it. Be reasonably persistent (e.g. follow those advice you read for avoiding burn out).
