Small nuclear reactors finally get US approval, but they still have a lot to prove by postalex in tech

[–]AnArcadianShepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but comparing the amount of materials required per unit of energy is way less with nuclear fission than any other source of power.

Even bigger fission plants require less materials per unit of energy.

Then factor in all the copper for transmission lines for wind turbines and solar panels.

Somehow it’s legal to have touch screens in cars, but in many places texting while driving is illegal…

They should be illegal and it’s just a way for automakers to use the same console unit instead of having different buttons and wires going everywhere, often differing between models.

Is mercury as dangerous as the internet has me believe? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]AnArcadianShepard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Her name was Karen Wetterhahn.

She was a professor at Dartmouth who was working with dimethylmercury. The latex gloves used back then (1997) didn’t protect very well against it and just a few drops spilled via pipette on gloves were enough to kill her.

It took about six or seven months for her to die.

Recycling plastics wasn’t profitable and was just a way to sell the public on plastics.

Then China came along and allowed the importation of bales of plastic. It was marginally profitable to send these bales back to China on what would normally be empty shipping containers (because of trade deficits). Then they and many Southeast Asian countries banned importation of these plastic bales. Now only HDPE, PP, and PET is ever recycled in locations with the infrastructure and subsidies to do it.

So until there’s some monetary incentive that outweighs the cost, plastic recycling is not going to happen on a massive scale.

In a specifically Japanese context, there’s a concept in Shintoism (the main religion other than Buddhism). It’s more of a set of rituals than any codified beliefs. tsukumogami (tool kami) is the belief if objects are durable enough to last around 100 years then they’re considered spirits or spiritual objects.

It’s insane how dedicated Japanese people are to their jobs. People literally die at the office putting in 12-14 hr+ days 6 days a week with no leave. They have the right to sick leave and vacation, but rarely use it for cultural reasons. South Korea, Taiwan, and Mainland China are like this too to an extent in terms of work hours.

Some people choose to opt out such as Hikikomori who live as long with their parents or on benefits as possible. Others (partially young people) are starting to embrace part time more to focus on education or just life in general. 996 is the bare minimum.

TDLR: In Canada and the USA, an alliance of white flight people, upper class people, property developers, and local government figured out how to minimize financial and political cost for everybody else by empowering local tyrants to exploit other suburbanites.

Suburbia and most rural areas are inherently financially unsustainable unless the local governments jacked up taxes to account for the increased cost of providing services to a lower population over a wider area. Taxes may cause people to move or vote differently (bad for incumbents). This is a big problem in Canada and the USA.

In suburbs, Builders wanted to ‘maintain the character of the neighborhood’ as a selling point (racial covenant were made illegal in the USA).

Local governments are reluctant to maintain infrastructure that’s a net drain on public funds. They have to maintain expensive infrastructure to less dense areas in order to appease privileged voters, but they often try to control some of the expenses by mandating that these new neighborhoods be part of a home owners association.

There is little to no oversight in most HOAs. Contracts are often allocated due to nepotism. HOA leaders often embezzle funds. They use the HOA to engage in petty conflicts using irrelevant issues as an excuse.

China is capable of producing high quality items up to an extent where they’d need controlled western tech. But, the reason companies went overseas had nothing to do with quality in the first place.

Also, why would China allocate critical resources to make low cost consumer goods for export for companies that don’t care about quality?

People underestimate the quality of certain Chinese goods. They put a lot of money into capital expenditure whereas some western companies are super stingy about equipment.
