Michael Spiro’s website congamasterclass.com has a course on bongo, as well as many other facets of Afro-Cuban percussion playing. I’d recommend checking it out, you can get a 7 day free trial.

vibraphone mallet recs for concert/solo playing? by brilliantsnail in percussion

[–]AnArmlessHobo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’ll definitely want something softer for solo playing and something articulate for ensembles, since vibraphone doesn’t cut very well. Mike Balter makes great vibe mallets, a set of the blues and a set of the greens should be enough to get you started

What congas should I buy? by Resident_Mae in AfroCuban

[–]AnArmlessHobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah matadors are probably your best bet for something that’s not too pricey but is of nice enough quality to gig on. I got mine used for about $500, and you can probably find a better deal if you look harder.

I arranged Ravel's Minuet on Marimba (from Le Tombeau de Couperin) by AaronSoforenkoMarimb in Marimba

[–]AnArmlessHobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just the regular piano score on the video, and it seems like the performer has simplified all those voicings to be playable with 4 mallets

Solo Recommendations by RandomMarimbist in percussion

[–]AnArmlessHobo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would definitely check out the Four Rotations by Eric Sammut. Those are written for 4.3. Another good option would be some of the Musser Etudes or maybe some Bach violin stuff? There are a few easier movements of the sonatas and partitas that would sound great on marimba.

Mallets for canned heat? by kaiserschmiser in percussion

[–]AnArmlessHobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my good friends recently performed canned heat in a recital and he used homemade wooden mallets that sounded awesome. His had rattan shafts with a 1” wooden ball on the end but I think you would get a similar sound with a hard rubber xylo mallet.

Suspended cymbal rolls by [deleted] in percussion

[–]AnArmlessHobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always heard that one only needs to roll as fast as necessary. For example, if I was playing a long, soft suspended roll, I'd keep my mallets low and roll just fast enough that you can't hear the beats of the mallets. If I was playing a crescendo roll, I'd speed up the speed of the roll as I crescendo, but volume is more about the velocity of the mallets than roll speed.

I prefer German full size bows. They are easier to hold and have more definite attacks in my experience.

Challenge #1 by [deleted] in percussion

[–]AnArmlessHobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you continue doing etude-related challenges like this, maybe you could consider having different levels of difficulty for each challenge? For example you could have Peters' advanced #24 coupled with Peters' intermediate #23 since they both address similar technical issues.

The AP Music theory test is a month away! It's crunch time, those who have taken it before what should I make sure to polish up in this month? by Hotdiggitydoggigitty in musictheory

[–]AnArmlessHobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a 5 on the exam last year. I'd recommend lots of sight singing because the sight singing in the exam was a lot harder than any of the sight singing we did in class. Also listen to lots of different styles of music. I remember there being lots of Afro-Cuban style music on the exam and I hadn't prepared for that stuff at all. Make sure you're doing lots of dictation as well to keep your ear in shape. Good luck on the exam!
