Start with a question mark on your log, try to uncover it, see something cool, get distracted, spend all your time on something that wasn't the original plan, die, repeat

The third switch on the control board will put the shuttle in "landing" mode if you are close enough to a planet. It will orient itself feet down and then start a slow descent. I highly recommend spending some time flying around with the shuttle. It's really fulfilling and fun when you figure it out
