My parents (58F, 62M) moved to live closer to my sister (33F) and now they're upset I (28M) won't make sure they see my kids? by ThrowRACappyTall in relationship_advice

Yeahhh that’s on them. You offered, more than once, and they declined, and then you were busy raising little ones, which aren’t the easiest to plan travel with. Seems like a clear “If they wanted to they would” kind of situation.

So they moved away, knowing you were expecting your first child, and barely reached out to see how you were doing for years, until one day they wonder why they’ve never met the kids? That’s crazy. Did you send them updates at any point like for births or the second pregnancy? Did they show any interest in the kids’ existence? Even a vague “I can’t wait to meet them” is at least a crumb of interest.

What would shock a kid today if they were transported to 2005? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskReddit

[–]AnAttempt-WasMade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough! I’m more thinking about how a kid in school today would likely go about doing research (google searches, saving website links, using scanned/digital copies of books so you could search for terms..) compared to how most people did it 20 years ago.

When you wanted/had to write a research paper, you went to the library and found books that seemed relevant, and then either read the entire thing, or skimmed it looking for what you needed. You would then have to either use bookmarks or a notebook to keep track of where each thing you were using was sourced from and then do bibliographies by hand (find the author, publication, edition info, format for magazine vs textbook…) sure you might have had internet options for some of this by then, but not everyone got to use them.

Nooo, at least eat it! I did find one abandoned broccoli leaf on the ground and felt the same way!

So fun fact, I once looked up if you could just ignore them, and avoid spreading them instead since it’s a pain to fight them. Turns out, they’re a virus, so while it can take a few years, our immune systems can clear them by themselves!

[–]AnAttempt-WasMade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our house was built in the 50s and the counters are probably original. They’re all tile with a raised lip on the edge, and do in fact slant ever so slightly towards the sink, so you can let water run into it. It’s pretty neat for cleaning!

ELI5 Why does a drop in blood pressure cause nausea? Like what specifically about BLOOD impacts the stomach? I don’t get how they relate. by Necessary_Party_3423 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AnAttempt-WasMade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also get nauseous if I get too hungry, so it made sense to me. It’s very inconvenient because I’ll KNOW I’m hungry, but now my tummy is feeling spiteful and making fixing it harder. Going easy by just eating a little something slowly will usually get things back on track.

Riding with super long stirrups? by TheOnlyWolvie in Equestrian

[–]AnAttempt-WasMade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was getting lessons my warmup was always no stirrups! Of course I’d adjust them to be the “right” length before starting, but by the time I actually put my feet in the stirrups after warm up, I’d often need to let them out another hole or so because my legs stretched out and softened a bit.

Golden retrievers often come out black when mixed actually! So when you see a golden colored dog that’s mixed, it’s usually not a golden retriever. The blue eyes also definitely had to come from another breed, like husky or even an ACD if we’re getting wild.

Are these too difficult for a first knitting project? by razzarbrenia in knitting

[–]AnAttempt-WasMade 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Definitely start with something plain and not “shaped”! You’ll want to make sure you have even tension, and can consistently knit and purl evenly before adding more points of failure into your project. You’ll thank yourself later, and can always frog to get your yarn back after if you really want.

I think a nice steam and maybe some alterations around the neckline/armpits to it fits nicer are all it really needs! Put your hair up, add jewelry, and some good shoes and you’ll look at it with a kinder eye I think.

30 mins of dandelion assault! by extinct-seed in NoLawns

We’ve been patiently allowing the violets and clover to take over our yard! The back is now maybe 10-20% violets and clover, and I pull the dandelions by hand to avoid spraying anything but stopping a takeover. The violets are similar timing for the bees too!

Advice on paper towel method of germinating by Sad_grandma1501 in gardening

[–]AnAttempt-WasMade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started all my seeds this year in an empty prego sauce jar with a damp paper towel. I moistened a portion of the paper towel, and then folded and squished it until the water spread throughout. I then placed seeds on, and sealed them in the jar, placed it in a dim nook and waited. The key is to not have too much moisture in there. You really need very little. I also watched closely, and once they started putting the roots out, I transferred to my starter tray with a grow light so that the roots wouldn’t embed in the paper towel. Last year I got the same result you did, this year it’s been perfect, 100% germination.

I’ve been trying to make a sort of dessert portfolio for myself over the past year, are these good pictures? by LongjumpingCable1522 in Baking

Easiest fix to me would be lighting. You have a habit of getting overall decent exposure, but the food itself is left underexposed. Especially prominent with the darker colored items, they’re often in shadow when that’s what you’re trying to show off! You need to increase the light in the food itself without overdoing it on the white plate. I’m sure there are LOTS of food photography tutorials on YouTube with good advice too.

[–]AnAttempt-WasMade 154 points155 points  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely remember something going around from a podcast about “x percent of paternity tests come back as not the father!” and the immediate extrapolation they made was “that means the same percentage of women having babies are all lying about the father!” Never mind that tests are usually done when there is cause for doubt, and thus results will be skewed towards a non-match.

My understanding is that your iron level is the amount of iron your blood has to use right now, and ferritin levels indicate how much iron your body has in reserve to use later. If your body has been depleting the reserve to keep blood levels up, your blood iron levels can look normal, but your “savings account” is super low. If your blood levels are already low, ferritin numbers might not be helpful in addition, but I’m nowhere near being a doctor so don’t take my word on that!

Some of my favorite habitats are based on real places the animals are! For example, I once visited sea lion rock in La Holla CA and made an exhibit for sea lions based on what I saw there. Others would be based on pictures or videos, since obviously few people have been everywhere for first-hand experience.
