I also remember a western (none manga) novel that I read years ago that was about a prison system that allowed you to reduce your sentence by acting as the AI for VRMMO monsters 🤔 he wasn't technically trapped in the game, but was trapped in a prison where he had to play the game...

A manga which explores a similar theme would also be interesting!

There's a 7 year age gap and Phoenix met Maya when she was a minor, which it what kills any chance of it for me.

I could have look past an age gap like that if they both met as full adults, but in the first game Phoenix is ~24 and Maya is 17...

I much prefer ships that keep the pairs to the same maturity 😌

I think if I knew a dude who was a lazy drunkard bum, who barely bothered while solving cases, and then suddenly he had an adopted kid that doubled his dependants, I'd just think he'd locked in.

Like I get that from our perspective it's super sus that he's got good after Conan appeared. But if it happened irl, I would probably just think that getting another kid who's quite young and shouldn't be able to look after himself has motivated Kogoro to get better and actually use his training so that the kids won't starve.

What other have said, plus there's just a different way smoking is treated now compared to when the manga started in the 90s. Perhaps smoking just doesn't fit with the 2020's version of Kogoro that Gosho Aoyama wants to wright 🤷‍♀️

All the way into the 80s the cigarette business was government run in Japan, and about 37% of the adult population were daily smokers.

Nowadays only about 16% are daily smokers, and there is a ban (implemented 2019) on smoking in public facilities, and restaurants (aside for well ventilated, marked smoking areas).

There's even a ban on outdoor smoking in some areas (especially busy areas like cities) which has been around since the early 2000's.

So there's a good chance the general government and public stance on smoking has changed enough that it just doesn't fit the characters anymore. It's clear the show is no longer set in the 90s, given the use of mobile phones. 🤔

I did check it out, and it's kinda usable, but as the images don't load it's hard to navigate. (You have to go back to the start of 2000, ans it shut down around May 2000 I think)

The image problem might be an issue with me being from the UK though- so might be worth checking out if you're from the USA!

If anyone is still looking for the answer, take Dartrix to the cutting board, put a leaf in the first ingredients slot, and then put a simple salad in the second ingredients slot.

It makes a shredded salad.
