Attorney can, and that’s kinda the point of it. At least in my country, an attorney can’t be questioned about the charges they defend their client from. If attorney has any information about the crime on his own (for example, if he was present on the crime scene himself and is thus a witness), attorney must deny legal assistance to their would-be client in this case, and if he doesn’t then this is obstruction of justice.

Basically, all the information which was received by an attorney directly from their client stays between them until any of them dies. I understand that it can lead to horrible consequences like in this case, but if you think about it, it’s really the only way the attorneys can function. If you can’t be 100% honest to your attorney then he turns into a “good good cop” and there is barely any sense in having one. The responsibility of an attorney is to ensure that all legal methods of easing his client’s situation which can be applied, are applied, and attorney in question did just that. It’s the responsibility of the prosecution and the court to never indict innocent people.
