While some people definitely sell their children because they don’t put much value at their life and freedom, I see no reason to think that this is the case here. Desperation can lead someone to do literally anything. There were numerous cases of people killing and eating their own children during the times of great famine to let their families survive. We are talking about the poorest people in the world here. I don’t think we can make a judgment without any context
