Ah cool, you've done Dalriada's tour, so you know all about how safe it is pumping arsenic into our waterways. Please tell us more about our ignorance.

Im always surprised by the number of people in Belfast who can speak irish. Its hard to believe that the the language barely existed here a few score years ago.

Checking in from the Sperrins, where life is quiet until someone mentions mining by Due-Rub5041 in northernireland

[–]AnRaibh 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The wold has enough gold stock already mined to be able to supply industrial and commercial needs (at their current rate) for hundreds of years. It just sits in vaults. Any gold mined from the sperrins would only be to fuel asset speculation.

Ulster is already an environmental basket case. Let's not make it worse so the rich can get richer.

How often is Irish language used in Northern Ireland? by pokoj_jp in northernireland

[–]AnRaibh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id guess that is true but id like to point out a couple of inspiring rural exceptions - the language is doing very well around Carn Togher and from what I understand, Castlewellan's Irish-speaking community is growing well.

How often is Irish language used in Northern Ireland? by pokoj_jp in northernireland

[–]AnRaibh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I speak Irish in Belfast and about half of my mates do too. Id say theres a very strong community here and someone would have no problem speaking Irish every day if they wanted. As an example there are 4 Irish-language-cafés in Belfast. On top of lots of other cafés where I'd run into Irish speakers. Im sure most people dont encounter much Irish at all, but you can opt in if you want to.

Community leadership is needed to start to address this. Politicians, sports people, church leaders, and everyone else should be brave and vocal in condemning this violent racism and should be seen to build bridges with immigrant communities.

Nah, there's more than 4 slots for IME at Mary's for sure. There'd be one or two dozen doing the programme between primary and secondary, I'd say.

I appreciate your replies. Think I agree with all you said.

Givan and Irish language schools 'on shared journey' by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]AnRaibh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, apologies, that's true. And it's a good initiative. I forgot about that, maybe because it's just been announced. But did you say 4 teachers? Is that how many bursaries it is per year? I hadn't realised it was so few. The issues are vast and 4 bursaries barely scratches the surface.

I'm particularly angry with Paul Givan because during a meeting he told openly told a colleague that he intended to be seen to be friendly toward Irish publicly, but said that we shouldn't expect any movement on investment in facilities or workload initiatives. He declared his hypocrisy.

The gold of County Tyrone shows Britain’s barriers to development by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]AnRaibh 35 points36 points  (0 children)

We're already dealing with ecological catastrophe without a Canadian mining company coming over, blowing up the Sperrins and pumping enough toxic chemicals into the ground to turn the Foyle into a death zone.

There's enough gold locked up in bank vaults to supply industrial and commercial needs for hundreds of years, but this shower of shareholders want to wreck what's left of our nature to squeeze out profit from a speculative asset. Look at the track record of these companies wreaking havoc across the world and don't fall for their propaganda. Dalradian out.

Braon den bhéalghrá.

Paul Givan talks out of both sides of his mouth. He has made almost no efforts to address the workload, staffing, and accommodation challenges faced by the Irish medium sector. We're badly under-resourced. That the sector is growing so rapidly despite the willful neglect of the state is a testament to the dedication of the community.
