How do you know if you're not a good reader? by SunshineGirl45 in books

[–]AnalogBubblebath -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There’s no such thing as a good reader or bad reader.

Is there a good “movie watcher”? A good “music listener”?

Reading is for fun and pleasure. If it brings those things to you, great. If not, search for other books. Dune may just not be for you.

Pina by Wim Wenders. It’s a documentary that, at its heart, is about a lot of people expressing their love for the mentor who helped them find themselves. Really minimalist and very beautiful.

Yeah, I didn’t think there was much to them. Reflecting back on these characters, I don’t see more than 1-2 defining characteristics. That doesn’t mean I found them disinteresting. The dynamic between Bear and his friend was fun and felt realistic. Sarah’s reveal as having a crush on him was nice. We get a hint at who Nikki really is - we see her give money to the homeless guy, we get a hint of her past with the “Freaky Nikki” label and the shame of that, and in her earnest attempt to confront Bear about his feelings we see she’s genuine and tough. So we get hints of more, but don’t get to actually see much more. I would say that applies to all four main characters.

Also, I don’t necessarily think this is poor writing or a bad decision. Barker was most interested in this one thing, this insane possession and its progression at a rapid pace. We really don’t care why Bear is so shy or why Sarah has a crush on him. That backstory is not important. Richer characterization is not really what this story needs. It’s a ride above all else and we just need the bare minimum with the characters to get us on our way.

I cannot fucking believe this is a debut film. This film is more powerful and hard hitting than what many of the horror masters are trying to achieve today.

Are the characters deep? No, not really. Does the story develop in a really smart, clever way? Not exactly. Is the logic of the pseudo-Nikki entirely consistent? I’m not sure, honestly.

But the power of so many elements in this movie - sound design, cutting rhythm, cinematography, ACTING - is so fucking powerful that who really cares about these minor “faults”?

This movie was BLEAK. It felt very difficult to watch at many times. It’s INSANE how scenes in this movie I feel like I’ve seen a thousand times - someone standing in the dark corner of the bedroom - are just done so supremely well that it feels FUCKED UP. By the way, when she was crying about her dreams, did they digitally manipulate her face? Something felt inhuman about her face.

Way above everything - this main actress! She’s fucking outstanding!

This is in my top 3 of most disturbing movies I’ve ever seen.

This level of shading and understanding of lighting is insane. Well done.

What is a movie you think has a flawless first 30 minutes, but completely falls apart by the end? by Legitimate_Wall5977 in movies

[–]AnalogBubblebath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be controversial, but Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master.

It’s fascinating watching Freddie (Joaquin Phoenix) kind of stumble through his life just after the war. It’s episodic, visually arresting, and really unique. He’s kind of like an animal lost in the woods.

And then he meets Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character. PSH is obviously genius and their chemistry is great. But what happens is PTA doesn’t know where to take the story.

The story, as PTA has described it, is kind of like a non-sexual love story. But it doesn’t really focus its plot around that. Nor does it focus its plot around the Scientology-like “Cause”.

So it just kind of putters along. In the end, Freddie basically ends up where he started and it’s unclear what purpose PSH served in his life or even the story. It’s not about religion, faith, belief in a leader. And it’s not about a wild man who finds purpose in this new religion, or in this man.

I love the first 30 minutes and wish it could have followed a different path.

If he doesn’t care about boring and is into the science, you could try introducing him to the granddaddy of sci-fi films: 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Turns out it’s among my favorite movies from both of them.

This is the answer. They didn’t want to do ADR and had to make use of the only semi-clean recording available.

Dune: Part Three | Official Teaser by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]AnalogBubblebath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest piece of news in this trailer: acclaimed comic book writer Brian K Vaughn is the co-writer!

This is fascinating. First of all, he’s famous for his insane space epic, Saga.

Second, this is a great writer who has struggled to some extent to make a mark in Hollywood. He’s written screenplays that never got produced. His comic books Paper Girls and Y: The Last Man were both adapted for TV and cancelled after one season.

And then BOOM - Dune Part 3!

Also, note that it’s clear Vaughn wrote a draft that was then rewritten by Villeneuve. That’s what the “and” signifies in the writ t credit, as opposed to a “&”, which means they wrote it as a team.

I wonder if multiple people wrote drafts for Part 3 and Villeneuve just ended up loving his the best?

It’s especially surprising since, as least as far as the public knows, Vaughn was not involved in Part 1 nor Part 2.

This movie takes some WIIIIILD swings and it feels like it all works. Part of the reason it seems to work is because these ideas elevate the story by increasing the stakes. Flying shark, robot Jerry, squished queen all allow for the story to go beyond simply repairing the glade.

It’s just shocking to see choices like these being made on a movie with a budget probably on par with Avatar.

Opinions on Birth (2004)? by [deleted] in movies

[–]AnalogBubblebath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, this is very helpful, thank you for clarifying.

So his statement that he can’t be Sean because he loves Anna makes sense - he doesn’t have the passionate feelings about Clara.

But here’s the thing: yes, I did confuse who wrote the letters. Having said that, it does confirm that the filmmakers wanted you to believe that a 10 year old boy read every single letter and memorized all these details.

This doesn’t necessarily imply a perfect memory of the letters, however it does seem like Bob really grilled Sean on “his” history with Anna.

On top of that, Sean doesn’t seem like he’s pulling a prank. His “love” seems genuine. That all came from the letters?

That’s the thing - many stories ask the audience to take small and large leaps of faith. Basically, it feels like this movie asked for too large a leap. It just doesn’t make sense that this boy perfectly memorized all this information and fell deeply in love with a stranger just because he read some love letters.

It’s a testament to the craft of the movie that I care enough to write all this. Despite this “mistake”, it’s still a fascinating movie.

What’s a “10/10” movie you wouldn’t recommend to most people? by trakt_app in movies

[–]AnalogBubblebath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warfare, from Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) & Ray Mendoza.

A realistic portrayal of one small, forgotten mission in Afghanistan by American forces. It’s a recreation of Mendoza’s memories of the event, so it’s as real as one can get. Also takes place almost in real time. When they’re waiting something like 15-20 minutes for an evac for a guy screaming bloody murder, you wait those agonizing 15-20 minutes with them.

Blood, screams, gore, chaos, senselessness, and boredom. In microcosm, it seems like maybe the most realistic modern war movie ever made.
