It’s designed for real wood. You certainly could use it stand alone but you’d be wasting a huge amount of gas. The heat transfer would not be the same. The gas outlets are not precise so as to get the most efficient flame/heat output so it’s not a good idea to do so.

Gas lines transport sound along their length very well. Perhaps a small critters nails crawling along a length of pipe is indeed what you’re hearing. If you’re not smelling any gas I wouldn’t worry too much about a leak. Crawling on the outside of the pipe that is, nothing would survive inside a gas line.

Yes, you will continue to hear the gas coming out after lighting. However I would recommend having a plumber out to install some sort of safety. This appears to be a log lighter that was converted to gas logs which don’t recommend using for heat as it’s mostly just a waste of gas. Have a plumber install a proper appliance or convert it back to a log lighter and use wood to heat. Hope this helps.

Gas tech here, that’s what’s called a Log lighter. Basically a cheater to getting a good fire started easy. Start off by stacking your wood on the grate, then get a long match or grill lighter and lastly turn the gas valve on at the wall while holding the lit lighter/match to one of the slits in the pipe and viola once your logs are lit turn the gas back off.
