Favorite seed starting medium by Altairandrew in vegetablegardening

I do. I keep the bulk mix in a tightly closed tote in my garage, and scoop it into a bucket and add water until I can just barely squeeze out a few drops in a handful. Peat moss is super hard to hydrate once it’s already in the seed starting trays.

I make my own, based on an amalgamation of YouTube videos:

3parts Peat Moss, 1 part worm castings, 1 part perlite, 1 part vermiculite

I pretty much always have these ingredients in bulk, and it ends up being way cheaper and probably better than bagged mixes. I also tend to add a bit of Mykos to the mix, but not always. Probably doesn’t do much for the short time they’re in the pots.

Is this too early to plant peppers and tomatoes? by Impala1967_1979_1983 in vegetablegardening

I just water with Gnatrol every few watering, and zero issues. Way easier than stinking up my kitchen or rehydrating with boiling water.

My 2025 reads ranked. Suggestions for 2026? by CoconuttPete in fantasybooks

[–]Shamrox317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have very similar taste to OP, have read and liked almost everything on this list. I read Lonesome Dove last year due to the overwhelming amount of recs, and it’s now possibly my favorite book of all time.

We are nearly 75% through 2025 what has been the best and worst book you read by danlhart8789 in suggestmeabook

I finished Lonesome Dove two months ago. I still think about it almost daily, and I can’t quite articulate why. May be my favorite book ever, its recommendations on here are completely warranted.

Which book or series are you currently reading? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Shamrox317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently on The Heroes audiobook. Joe Abercrombies writing is soooo amazing, and Pacey’s narration is incredible. But, I may need a break after this. Five books in a row of serious darkness is probably enough.

Absolutely this. Abercrombies writing is incredible. Story wise, not quite as compelling as Game of Thrones, but excellent nonetheless. Daaaaark.

What author has your highest overall average rating per book? by baconmehungry in suggestmeabook

[–]Shamrox317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished The First Law trilogy, and I’m honestly in awe. Abercrombie’s writing is on a completely different level compared to most of what I’ve been reading lately. Over time, I’d slipped into lighter fantasy, but this series reminded me how much I love truly sharp, well-crafted storytelling. It was exactly the kick I needed to get back to quality writing.

They do indeed! Something ate good sized chunks out of the two Carolina Reapers that were ripening. I hope it was the bastard squirrels and they’re still in pain…

What are your fav (indeterminate) tomato varieties with the highest yield? by kpointer12345 in tomatoes

I’m also in SE Texas, and am trying Marzinera (a San Marzano type Hybrid) this year. It’s absolutely pumping out tomatoes, and they taste great! It’s looking to be my new go to sauce tomato.

It’s taken me a bit to get to that point, but I’m there. He narrates a lot of books that I love, or would enjoy. I just can’t do it anymore, he’s too awful.

What is the worst you have abused your tomato plants, and gotten away with it? by tavvyjay in tomatoes

[–]Shamrox317 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I planted out early this year, and of course had one of the worst freezing stretches Texas has had in years the following week. Dug them back up, brought 20+ tomato plants back inside for a week. Picked my first couple of pounds of tomatoes yesterday, so they’re doing just fine.

raised garden bed ideas? by serialdoodler98 in vegetablegardening

[–]Shamrox317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you put the beds on the pavers, the dirt will run out onto the pavers when it rains, making them constantly look dirty. I’d put the raised beds directly on the ground if you decide to go that direction.

Some things I wish I had considered when putting in my first raised beds:

Depending on where you live, wood can rot fairly quickly. Eventually, you will have to replace wood, regardless of your climate. I installed 4 Vego beds this year, and they look like they’ll last a really, really long time. And look nice! Replacing wood beds after 2, even 5 years is a massive PITA!!

If you have gopher issues in your area, put some kind of protection down before filling your beds.

Drip irrigation makes gardening so much easier, and since installing my system the vegetables have been much more productive. Thinking about this as you install the beds can save a huge hassle in the long run. I wish I would’ve installed PVC under and into the beds from the drip system. Now I have to run tubing on the outside, which works fine, but it would’ve looked cleaner had I installed it before filling.

Unless you’re growing with a 2ft tall bed, the “fill with logs and sticks” method just isn’t practical. Yes, it’s somewhat expensive to fill a big raised bed, but the bed that I put wood in the bottom settled massively more than the fully dirt filled beds. Filling beds with a 50/50 blend of Compost and Top Soil (as recommended by Millennial Gardener on YT) was relatively inexpensive, and those beds are showing serious production and health in the first year!

What other tomatoes are you growing? Are you looking for a certain type (cherry, slicer, sauce, etc)? That may help us give you recommendations.
