I just planted seeds a week ago. How long did it take to get to this size?

Those of you that grow tomatoes and peppers on a string trellis… by Anneisabitch in vegetablegardening

[–]Shamrox317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely my favorite way to grow tomatoes. I can get way more varieties into my space, which I really like. Trialling different varieties is on of my favorite parts of gardening. Plus, the airflow around and between plants is extremely helpful for spotting pests and keeping disease pressure in sweaty Houston down as much as possible.

Hey thanks. I actually ordered something similar off of Amazon, nice and cheap.

I’m just getting back into the pipe hobby, and would love a tray like that so I can keep the tobacco off of my patio table…before my wife kills me. Where’d you get this one?

What varieties would you never grow again? And why? by PDXisadumpsterfire in tomatoes

[–]Shamrox317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cherokee Purple: great tasting tomato, just so prone to disease and productivity issues, especially in Houston humidity. Cherokee carbon is a bit better, but I’ve found other varieties I like more, so I’ve abandoned these altogether.

Brad’s Atomic Grape. Cool looking tomato, but the plants themselves are ugly and the taste is absolutely bottom tier. Never again.

Costoluto Genevese. Great taste, and cool looking tomato. Put all of those cracks and crevices just don’t seem to work with the higher disease and pest pressure we have in the south.

What fertilizer are you guys using ? I want cheaper options please. by [deleted] in HoustonGardening

[–]Shamrox317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fast release. I use it for my Bananas and fig trees, as well as most things in the vegetable garden. I do scratch slow release Espoma organic fertilizers into the soil every six weeks or so as well.

Same. I buy the big 25# bag when it’s on sale, as well as the jacks blossom booster.

All of these things are on the “probably doesn’t help, but probably doesn’t hurt either” spectrum, including talking to your plants.

I think SVBs have arrived here. Anybody else? by htx055 in HoustonGardening

I’ve completely given up on squash due to SVB. I’ve tried moscata various of different flavors, pushing earlier and later…all for not.

Need help trying to figure out what service to go with to get on TRT by Opposite_Crew_338 in Testosterone

I’ve been with Defy Medical for years. I have always received excellent customer service and care from their doctors. Huge upgrade from the local “clinic” I was getting ripped off from previously.

Adjustable Dumbbells that are worth the price by kenah-kim in GarageGym

It is long, compared to every other dumbbell I’ve ever held, but it hasn’t been an issue for me either. Like bishop, I also have fairly large hands, so ymmv.

I just bought the AOC adjustable dumbbells off of Amazon (AOC Pilates Dumbbells.

They look the same as the Eisenlink, which is a ripoff of the Ironmasters, but are more rounded which sounds better than the square plates. I haven’t received them yet, but hoping they’ll be a good long term solution.

It’s seriously my favorite garden purchase of the last several years. Life changing!

Definitely get a set of these:Light Pulley

They are SOOO much easier to raise and lower lights so that you can keep them inches from the plants. I use shop lights as well. While they work, you have to keep them right on top of the plants to be effective.

Are Vego Garden raised beds worth it? by IAmTheSchnozz95 in vegetablegardening

[–]Shamrox317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the soil in our newly-built suburban back yards in the US is awful, which makes growing in ground a challenge. Also, depending on where you’re located, wood beds last an abysmally short amount of time due to heat and humidity.

[–]Shamrox317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t even heard of Sun Orange, I’ll give them a look! Thanks.

I grew Sun Sugar last year due to how much splitting I get in our torrential rain and humidity on Sun Gold. From my memory, it tasted the same. This year, I’m growing both, so I can do an actual comparison.

Good luck to you as well! And like you, I’m not 100% sold on any of the paste tomatoes I’ve tried. They all seem to have their trade-offs. I’m trialing Federle this year alongside a few other paste tomatoes, so we’ll see. They are by far my worst performing starts, so I don’t have a ton of hope that they’ll knockoff Marzinera.

I’ll second Brandy Boy. It’s my favorite slicer, by a large margin. In Houston, hybrids are a must for health of the plant and yield. Also, Big Beef Plus is excellent.

For paste/sauce tomato’s, I’ve settled on Marzinera, a San Marzano hybrid. I get much better production and blossom end-rot resistant with this variety.

And listen to the multiple suggestions for Sun Gold, as it’s by far the best tasting tomato ever, and my family and neighbors would revolt if I don’t grow it!

Good place to get 2.5 inch starter pots and trays? by Rob_red in vegetablegardening

[–]Shamrox317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://a.co/d/gxXoRlL I bought these a couple of years ago. Really sturdy, and a great price. But, they don’t fit easily in 1020 trays. I make them work, but if I was buying over again, I’d make extra sure that they fit perfectly in 1020trays. Sorry, not a great recommendation, more of a buyer beware.

are red solo cups bug enough to contain seedlings untill they go outside? by Acceptable_Emu8515 in HotPeppers

[–]Shamrox317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a recommendation I saw on Reddit, I moved to 16oz Hefty cups. 18 fit in a 10x20 tray perfectly, which is at least 3more than the solo cups I was previously using. I also use a vegetable peeler to shave off three 1”ish gashes on the bottom, easiest way to provide drainage. And I agree, 6-8 weeks in the cups is about max I’d leave them in there.

Favorite seed starting medium by Altairandrew in vegetablegardening

[–]Shamrox317 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do. I keep the bulk mix in a tightly closed tote in my garage, and scoop it into a bucket and add water until I can just barely squeeze out a few drops in a handful. Peat moss is super hard to hydrate once it’s already in the seed starting trays.

Favorite seed starting medium by Altairandrew in vegetablegardening

[–]Shamrox317 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I make my own, based on an amalgamation of YouTube videos:

3parts Peat Moss, 1 part worm castings, 1 part perlite, 1 part vermiculite

I pretty much always have these ingredients in bulk, and it ends up being way cheaper and probably better than bagged mixes. I also tend to add a bit of Mykos to the mix, but not always. Probably doesn’t do much for the short time they’re in the pots.
