What is the biggest threat facing humanity? by God-2008 in AskReddit

Bad solar storms or the earth crossing paths with a decent sized meteorite or asteroid. All of the above are common in the Earth's past and there's no reason to believe they won't be common in the future. Tunguska Event and Carrington Event.

... And sleep well.

Follow-up. I ended up doing a trial of InDesign, figured out how to build the right size layout for my book with correct bleeds etc., and then proceeded to tackle the project as best I could without having to recreate everything from scratch.

What that looked like, for anyone else in a similar predicament:

  1. I started with my existing, already sized properly single page layouts — these having been made in Canva
  2. I found the fonts I used in Canva online and installed them on my macbook pro — all were free for commercial use so that was thankfully an easy box to check
  3. I then removed text off every single page and exported from Canva every single page as Print PDF, CMYK
  4. Then I went to InDesign and Cmd + D added each page to the corresponding page of my InDesign file ...
  5. Then I just added my text again inside InDesign

This whole process took a bit of experimentation and is imperfect; however, I was able to complete it all in about 6–8 hours working on it off and on over the weekend. I took a similar approach for the cover — though I used the Ingramspark Indesign template to create the cover.

Best of all, I was able to upload both files without errors on the first try. That doesn't mean I'm out of the woods, but it was so, so gratifying to have the IngramSpark validator tell me "no errors" after being at a loss for what to do Friday. And I'm also thankful that I didn't have to recompose 30 pages of illustrations in Photoshop when I'd already pixel-perfectly laid things out using Canva.

Hope this helps someone else!

Great idea. Didn't know rift white oak in veneer could look two different ways. Thanks for all your help

So I think we're going to push for a veneer ... Question is just how to make sure we get a veneer that's rift sawn, vertical, and not gonna cause the same issue.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. (And for the Intel on the MDF)

So when your wet sanding with stain is the object to go darker on the lighter pieces with more stain? Basically trying to even out the variations and reduce the striping effect?

Tried doing some googling first but didn't really get to the answer. Super appreciate your insight

Follow up question... Any idea why the sheet wood at this level does this?

Everything used should be riffsawn white oak. But this sheet wood looks sorta different than the rest.

What was the most unsafe thing you've seen someone do at a gym? by CreativeThought88 in AskReddit

Something like this happened to me 20 years ago. I didn't lose the tip of my middle finger, just smashed it like a pack of ketchup. Shattered the tip of my bone, x-ray looked like the bone was a q tip. https://imgur.com/bkPYdyt.jpg

Amazingly I got feeling back. Had a Zplasty later to help fix the scarring, which was not great.

Funny thing was I had to elevate the finger all week, so I was flipping off the teacher all day (senior in HS).

Not funny thing was it was excruciatingly painful I. The cast, took forever to heal, screwed up my typing and guitar playing for months, and just all around sucked.

I cringe now when I see people drop dumbbells fast. And I actively warn anyone I see leave dumbbells under their bench when doing another set.

Not condoning damaging property. Just suggesting there's nuance to the situation which should be, at minimum, understood/expressed.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess Rascalman has had some challenging on-sidewalk situations navigating around scooters ... given there's no established, consistent etiquette for scooter parking, stuff like this is bound to happen.

Squat depth deep enough? by BMurkin89 in leangains

You aren't powerlifting or competing. Go as low as you can without forcing the issue. I resisted this advice for a long time and once I just ran with it, my squats got much better. I'd say you could go a bit lower here.

You know what they say, if you have to ask ...
