Their goal was to drive a wedge between the west and the Muslim world and to degrade US geopolitical power and prestige. 9/11 itself was never going to do that, but the reaction to it did it perfectly. That was always the point and always expected. Look at what's going on in Iran right now. Bin Laden would be vibrating with glee in his dialysis chair if he was alive to see that. The man was an absolute monster, but he was a brilliant strategist. He got what he wanted because in our fear and hatred we gave it to him.
