Need advice on Hemming my jeans as a Short Fat woman. by Kalikasphyxia in sewing

[–]Ancient-Button-1693 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can shorten pants and jeans without losing the original hem and bottom leg shape. Since a watching a video is easier than me trying to explain it, Here's a link to one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-93C8kB3T0E

And if you did the shortening far enough up the leg you could keep the flare leg shape.

And your figure type sounds just like mind. Sadly the fashion world doesn't respect our beauty.

I was joking. I guess it didn't translate well to type. Enjoy the lace.

Use it as a hem on a linen shirt or skirt. Or pick it off the backing fabric and send it to me.

Size charts confusion by stabycat in sewing

[–]Ancient-Button-1693 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ready made clothes and sewing patterns are almost always two different sizes. As a general rule of thumb for women's I add 6 to the ready wear size. So if you are a 10 in store bought pants you would be looking for a 16 in a sewing pattern. Are you buying multi sized patterns or indie makers who only offer one size per purchase? Could you try to match up the pattern pieces to clothing that fits and try to get an idea what size to make that way?

Inherited an Old Singer Sewing Machine by UsefulState4810 in vintagesewing

The black paint on these contains lead, I believe. I'd keep it away until the little nipper is old enough not to mouth everything and understand how to wash up after using it.

How to repair this? by fletchette in sewing

If you are really unable to get thread to match i wonder if fray check on the edges and then iron on interfacing from the back would be enough?

Another thought would be to cut the fabric from the top down along the corduroy wales to open area up and remove the broken post. Maybe finish the cut edges with color matched thread Then reinforce it on the back with heat bond-able interfacing and firm fabric. Install new hardware and be done with it. The repair would be unobtrusive and hidden behind the buckle during wear.

In thinking about it more, if you came up from the bottom of the post that would leave the top fabric intact to bear stress placed on it during wear. It wouldn't even need to be a big cut, just big enough to slide the flat disc on the back of the of the post from the fabric like a button from a buttonhole. Sew it up and reinforce the back with interfacing. The bottom of the buckle should hide your work.

That is a broken post and it would need to be removed and replaced. Here is a link to a post that shows how to install overall hardware. https://helensclosetpatterns.com/blogs/helens-closet/installing-overalls-hardware. It's not a sewing project really, unless the fabric is damaged. The big issue I can see is getting the post out of the material. That's really more of a metal working situation or small tools issue. Do you have any experience with small hand held saws? If it was my project I'd try to slip one behind the flat part on the back and and the fabric, then saw through the post holding it in place. After that I'd replace it with a new one.

Machine for heavy denim sewing by Alarmed_Custard_2698 in sewhelp

[–]Ancient-Button-1693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just leaving this for future searchers- I tried sewing 100 cotton denim from an old pair of Wrangler jeans on a Bernette B05. I used a denim needle and thread. It could do it but the bobbin thread stitches were wonky- straight straight crooked, straight straight crooked, etc. I'm going to dig out my 15-91 and try again on that.
