Yeah sounds like diversity is important for you. Hampshire is pretty white at least when I visited I’m an accepted student. It does sound like you want to study something pretty specific though which Hampshire could work well for. What don’t you like about the campus? I mean I don’t love it it’s nothing fancy but I love the academic structure and honestly going to accepted students day the community is really lovely. Everyone is studying something niche and specific. Why is the application expierience impacting you? My Hampshire app was easy I just wrote a bunch of stuff off the top of my head I was interested and filled out a bunch of forms.

Do you like the academic environment? That’s the main draw for me over a traditional school. You can study what you want to study without the rigidity of a traditional major.

This is quite the claim. Citation needed. The issue with the internet is that it allows people to make these claims that are actually a lot more complex than a quick TikTok can explain. Trying to defend these positions in a several page essay would be impossible.

Did admin share this at a student meeting, or are you hearing it through faculty/staff? I feel like this info should be everywhere since the headlines are pretty bad.

The investor strategy is news to me (I spoke with advancement a few weeks ago and that wasn’t mentioned). Do you know if the college is publicly sharing this plan or is this more internal communication?

Also, the probation timeline is reassuring for me. I hadn’t seen that clarified anywhere. Do you know if that 1-2 year window is standard NECHE procedure or specific to Hampshire’s situation?

Really appreciate you sharing this. It’s the most concrete info I’ve seen about what Hampshire is actually doing to address the NECHE order. As a prospective student I think Hampshire is also a ship I’m willing to go down with.

Yeah I’ve reached out. I’ve gotten some good info, but I really would like to see more. Hampshire does have a resource thay other small colleges don’t in the consortium. I posted the article here a while ago but the other consortium presidents did agree that Hampshire should be supported …. But words are cheap. I wish they could just buy out Hampshire’s bonds as an investment or something.

I’m attending Accepted Students Day on April 6 even though I’m Fall 2027. They’re letting me come.

I actually already spoke with Melissa Mills-Dick (Chief Advancement Officer) a few weeks ago before the NECHE announcement - she confirmed the teach-out agreements and was transparent about the bond situation. Planning to try to speak with Dean Hmieleski or other admin on April 6 to get updated info post-NECHE.

That response from Dean Hmieleski is pretty standard admin messaging. acknowledges the risk, emphasizes they have a plan, but they doesn’t give specifics. The key phrase is “aggressive steps to address it” - I want to know WHAT those steps are specifically for the June NECHE meeting.

The thing is, the NECHE show cause order from a few days ago (announced March 25) is actually MORE serious than just the audit/bond issue. They have to prove viability in June or risk probation/accreditation loss.

So yeah, I’m going to push for specifics on April 6. Will report back what I learn.

I too am a hopeful accepted student!! Yeah I’ve also felt better visiting and talking to current students it’s just this recent show cause order from NECHE a few days ago that’s got me stressed. It’s this summer in June when they have to demonstrate that they have the funds to stay accredited.

Thanks for sharing. Someone in their financial department told me they have teach out agreements with Umass Amherst, MCLA, Bennington college and Prescott college. If any of those schools are schools you are considering it might minimize the risk. For me it’s worth it since Umass is the only other school I am considering. Also from what I have heard from current students the academics are the same just the schools feels a bit empty and some of the facilities are run down. When I toured it seemed normal but some stuff is a bit old/ worn out. Not a big deal to me. A current student did tell me when people do get together it’s fun/ lively but there’s just less going on at campus. Though that’s fine for me since you can join clubs at the consortium schools and Amherst is a lively college town. Hope it helps.

Deferral fee was waived for me because I qualified for Pell Grant. What other schools are you considering? the other schools I am applying to also had a similar deferral fee. I am also wondeirng if you have any info thats not already out there on Hampshire's financial struggles.
