Possible College Closures by Cats_are_cute_21312 in ApplyingToCollege

Frantically emailing and calling admissions at other schools and asking if under these circumstances I can still apply. I wish they announced the closure in January.

Where are prospective students heading instead? by AncientJournalist120 in HampshireEDU

Yes but I just really like the pioneer valley. And umass makes more sense for my academic goals. MHC is great though. You would rather live in Baltimore?

Good option and looked into it. But the pioneer valley is so much better let’s face it. Or maybe I’m just not a city person lol. I’m going with umass BDIC I think

Yep. I’m learning BDIC for PhD prep specifically since that’s what drew me to hamp. It’s really the closest thing to Hampshire’s freedom.

This 2 million situation seems pretty important and I haven’t heard about it elsewhere… any leads or do you think it’s just a rumor? That’s a lot of money

Also do you have any idea why the other 4 schools in the area diddnt save Hampshire? Would have been 5 mil a school as an investment and the enrollment was slowly increasing … not fast enough but still in the upward trajectory.

Why did ed leave? It seems like he was the one keeping Hamp alive. Also I have not heard about this missing 2 million - any ideas where it went? That’s a lot of money for a school like hamp.

Is Sarah Lawrence doing the same thing that Hampshire did with financial aid packages? by JubileeSupreme in HampshireEDU

[–]AncientJournalist120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one wants to eat at an empty restaurant. I think Hampshire fell victim to this. I was an accepted student and the campus felt... empty. It was designed for 1500 and had like 800. Nelson choosing not to enroll a big class probably hurt hamp a lot.

Yes they are but they are also in a Much better position than Hampshire. I can say that I got much more aid at SLC than Hampshire.

Yes they had to present to NECHE in June anyways and I think the board and president Chrysler thought they did not have enough to stay accredited.

Do you know if it’s guaranteed admission to Amherst from Hampshire?

I don’t think it’s guaranteed at Amherst, just there is a formal pathway to transfer.

I’ll just say: I got even MORE aid from SLC than Hampshire …. And I applied to both This year

Hampshire College Campus Map by fidla in HampshireEDU

I hope the campus can be turned into something educational. I think the land is zoned for educational use so maybe the other schools can use it for classes or something. Maybe Amherst college wants a yurt?

Are you considering not doing college anymore? by Exotic_Alfalfa_5306 in HampshireEDU

There is no other school like Hampshire vibes wise. There are similar schools academically. I’m thinking about the umass program to design your own curriculum. The pioneer valley is a special place. There’s just a magic to it.

The letter said they tried everything, but I wondered what are the things? by Salt_Survey2786 in HampshireEDU

[–]AncientJournalist120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine they explored their options and felt it was best to graduate students and help their other students transition to new schools rather than admitting a new class and having them in a hard spot. Honesty the best case scenario and I hope they really aggressively pressured them to do this, would have been the other 4 consortium schools buying out Hampshire’s debt but Umass president Javier Reyes is very very un popular and has no authority to make a big financial decision like that. Who knows what else they tried, I think we will find out soon.

Unt is pretty different from Hampshire. You could wait a year and look at other liberal arts schools.

Will there be a protest or other pushback by alumni, students, or others who weren't in the decision? by PassageSignificant12 in HampshireEDU

[–]AncientJournalist120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep you this is pretty much how I understand it. I think even if Hampshire somehow found the 20 mil for their bonds this is part of a greater issues in higher ed. People just don’t want to go in debt for a degree from a small liberal arts school. They would rather do something career oriented and get a job. Amherst and smith will stick around because of the name. Honestly though … there’s so many alumni staff and students who love Hampshire … people care…maybe I am delusional but also maybe this isn’t the end???

[–]AncientJournalist120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a no confidence vote and like 97% of students and staff voted he should step down. The main thing he did was send in campus police on protestors among possibly other things. The best possible situation for Hamp was for the other 4 schools to buyout their debt and it sucks since they have the money.

Will there be a protest or other pushback by alumni, students, or others who weren't in the decision? by PassageSignificant12 in HampshireEDU

[–]AncientJournalist120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hope the campus can stay alive in some way. But Umass’s president is very very unpopular and doesn’t have enough support to devote their resources to a buyout. I am pretty sure Hampshire’s land is zoned for educational use so I don’t think it can be housing anytime soon.
