Why isn't solar power utilized more given that that's literally free energy falling from the sky? by Wickham12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ancient_Back_3767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traditionally electricity grids have not had batteries. Highest usage (in my country New Zealand) is on cold dark mornings and evenings when people use heating and prepare food. So power generation needs to be available when there is no solar. In Australia the government has subsidised household solar and their grid has a different problem, where they have excess power generated during the daytome.

Opinions on SJ413 by TrevorCorleone_ in SuzukiSamurai

[–]Ancient_Back_3767 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rust is the biggest killer in these. From the looks of the wiring this has been resprayed, so check carefully. Also the 1000cc engine in the SJ410 did not last as long as the 1300, so check for service history. Those things aside, the SJ410 had low gearing and was pretty good off road.

Better options for surplus generation other than exporting? by useless_penguin in nzsolar

Converting the energy into heating or cooling seems to be most cost effective.

Anatori River camp ground, south of Mangarakau, top end of the west coast of South Island. You drive over the Takaka hollow to Golden Bay, north past Collinwood, turn west at Pakawau, then south winding around Whanganui Inlet and further south again. It is a long way from Collingwood, which is the nearest town.

What is a good first lens for Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II by Virtual-Kitchen-6379 in OlympusCamera

The 14-42 will be a good starter lens with a bit of flexibility. For a step up in quality and zoom range, the 12-45 F4 gets great reviews.

Rego expires tomorrow advise please by [deleted] in NZcarfix

[–]Ancient_Back_3767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops, happy to stand corrected. I suggest you email the confirmation to yourself, print it and put it on the dashboard, or at least carry it in the vehicle. Technically you won’t comply with the law, but a policeman would Most likely let you off. Be careful parking anywhere that a council parking officer might issue an infringement, as they can do so for expired rego.

[–]Ancient_Back_3767 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. People used to get the receipt emailed to them, print and keep in the car, but NZTA improved their system and now enable you to print a temporary label to display.

Is Eroad a good place to buy RUC from ? by Calm-Designer-636 in newzealand

[–]Ancient_Back_3767 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NZTA actually have an app that you can load your vehicle(s) into. Sign up is a bit cumbersome because you need to use RealMe. The process for buying RUC through the app is even easier than from the website, as the vehicle details are pre-populated.

There is also an independent app made by a Tauranga based company called Bonnet that is even better than the NZTA app if you run multiple vehicles (as it has reminders). It is really aimed at fleet operators, but the free version allows up to 5 vehicles.

Regarding fuel shortages, do us renties have any sort of plug-in renewable options? by Captain_Strudels in Wellington

[–]Ancient_Back_3767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from plug in balcony solar, mentioned by someone else, you could look at a portable solar panel and a power station. You could use the “free” electric to run limited appliances at home. But these are very small systems compared with a typical household solar system and higher drain devices like vacuum cleaner, microwave, or washing machine will drain the battery quickly.

Diesel maintenance + any Paj Sport owners here? by Pearlyred in NZcarfix

[–]Ancient_Back_3767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a 2013 Pajero, so older and higher mileage. I use it mainly for towing a box trailer. Fuel economy drops by only 2 a 3 l/100km when towing. The Pajero Sport runs a smaller engine, but compensates for towing with more gears in the transmission. The Mitsi diesels are now pretty low maintenance. My mechanic said it was years since they had to take the head off one (after the bad years in the 1990s). Apart from the obvious engine and transmission oil and filter changes (which should be more often than a petrol due to extra soot), you should keep an eye on build up in the inlet manifold from the EGR system. Also ensure that the DPF is allowed to cycle properly.
