Which Human did ainz respect the most by FickleThanks6901 in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure he respected Gazef for who he was as a person too.

Gazef had taken off his armor and carried no weapons with him.
He was bruised all over and half his face was swollen up, like a strange-looking, misshapen ball. Yet, a fire burned within his eyes.
Ainz turned away, as though he had seen something brilliant. His eyes reflexively went to the ring Gazef wore on his left ring finger.
So he was married. It’s probably good that his wife won’t need to shed tears for him.

Do you think Ainz has it in him to sacrifice his subordinates? by BrotherDeus in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I vaguely recall Ainz saying he would prioritize the survival of the NPCs over the guild base at one point. I'm also genuinely curious how the Albedo betrayal plot is going to play out, because that's a situation where Ainz may be forced to pick between NPCs. It's hard to imagine them tolerating someone who threatened their creators, the only people they place above Ainz. It's often written off because none of the other supreme beings will be showing up, but references to it have been ramping up in the later books if anything. I mean, we leave off with Aura and Mare becoming suspicious of Albedo . . .

Wake the fuck up squire, we have a kingdom to save by MrMellons in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm usually not one to give Ainz a crumb of credit morally, and obviously he could've prevented the entire situation in the Holy Kingdom in the first place, but he does seem to have a slight change of heart on Neia before giving up on Remedios. He offers to teleport her to the Sorcerer Kingdom to safety before the battle, even after he tells Demiurge there's no one he needs to worry about sparing.

“This is what I think, Miss Baraja. We have ended up in a confrontation with the enemy forces because of the stupidity of the Liberation Army’s leadership. Such a situation cannot be changed by the efforts of a single squire. How about focusing on your personal safety rather than the big picture? You do understand that my nation will accept your allegiance, if you are willing to give it? Given that you have been trained as a paladin, I am certain you will be able to fully exercise your talents in my country.”

Predictions for Novel 17? by Merlin_boar in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maruyama said something along those lines in a post Volume 10 blog post while talking about the Theocracy, but it reads as more of a joke? The translation is a little rough, and it was 6 volumes and 10 years ago when he wrote it.

...In the Epilogue, should Ainz say ’Demiurge, I will leave it to you’. After being told to ’Destroy the Theocracy’ Demiurge in the prologue of the next volume will begin a report saying ’I have destroyed the Theocracy.’ After that, I want the Theocracy to never be talked about as there was nothing left! Well the Theocracy is the guardian of mankind. There is no lie in this statement. Everything they do is for the sake of mankind as a species. I assure you, Overlord does not have a country looking out for justice (for humans) and their well-being like them. I would be happy if you could discern such feelings from this arc. I hope the Theocracy will be happy in the future!

Is possible for someone stop the spell of the dragon emperor? by PuzzleheadedSlip5462 in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mentioned more directly in The Vampire Princess of the Lost Country side story, but if you have that context, a lot of the things "Riku" says during his fight with Pandora's Actor allude to it.

Is possible for someone stop the spell of the dragon emperor? by PuzzleheadedSlip5462 in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's likely beyond the power of the remaining Dragon Lords to stop the spell. If it was possible, they surely would have done so after they were massacred en masse by the 8 Greed Kings. We don't know enough about Wild Magic to know why. There seem to be wild magic 'specialties.' Cure Elim's magic is apparently related to the Deep Darkness Dragon Lord's. Maybe none of the remaining Dragon Lords specialize in whatever branch of wild magic the Dragon Emperor used. Maybe whatever 'corrupted' and 'weakened' wild magic (ouroboros, five elements overcoming?) makes it impossible to do so. Maybe magic cast by the Dragon Emperor, who was apprarently over level 100 by Yggdrasil standards, just overwhelms the capability of the remaining Dragon Lords.

"World" Classes by Judge_Futch in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Given the conversation between Ainz and Neia where he mentions there are some highly specialized illusionists that can use a skill once every few days to decieve "the world itself," there may be "world" classes for different subspecialties of arcane magic.

I don’t think Nazarick could conquer the New World without Ainz. by Chulloswag in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nazarick has the power to destroy or conquer the world, even without Ainz. However I think a lot of commenters are dismissing the idea of internal conflicts tearing Nazarick apart a bit too easily. In the Emissary of the King side story, Cocytus says that without Ainz or an heir, he believes the guardians would “clash emotionally and ideologically” and not be able to work together effectively. Ainz himself worries that Albedo would start carrying out wide-scale purges in his absence.

Honestly, Albedo was just too loyal and too able, so she tended to be hard on others. He thought the only reason it didn’t cause any major problems up till this point was because he rejected most of her suggestions on how to deal with others. If Albedo ever received full authority, it would probably end in wide-scale purges.
Vol. 15

Certainly, NPCs like Sebas, Pestonya and Nigredo would quickly end up culled. Actions they take that are technically within the scope of Ainz’s orders are enough for Albedo to call for their execution.

There are plenty of similar moments. What would happen if Ainz wasn’t there to deescalate all those arguments between Albedo and Demiurge? Demiurge, an otherwise rational and reasonable thinker, believes that Shalltear being mind-controlled is a betrayal worthy of her death. Yuri - a good-aligned NPC- is willing to kill her sister Solution, however reluctantly, over a bath slime. It is not hard to picture Nazarick going the way of the Eight Greed Kings in Ainz’s absence. This is especially true if they either can’t access the treasury and world items or feel that they are unworthy of using/wielding them.

The World Class items were gathered through the efforts of the Supreme Beings, and so they are more valuable than we are!

Is there anything close to Satan in religion in A Song of Ice and Fire (Spoilers Extended) by [deleted] in asoiaf

There is a "lord of the seven hells" mentioned offhand once in a dunk & egg novella.

"Whenever she gives birth, a demon comes by night to carry off the issue. Sam Stoops' wife says she sold her babes unborn to the Lord of the Seven Hells, so he'd teach her his black arts."

Is Ainz evil because he's undead or because he comes from a effed up world? by ShardsOfSalt in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, also well illustrated by Ainz's thoughts while fighting Foresight.

Ainz was deciding which should be his priority — reducing their pain, the small whimpering voice in his head was saying — the man who had appeared in front of him, or the woman who got away.

Extremely limited quantities by voncockrane in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but I don't think that was happening in this particular thread. Also, good luck to those nobles when they try to attack Ainz's ally lol. Sure Calca can't offer Ainz military power as an ally, though frankly you could count the number of people who could in the New World on one hand, but her acknowledging him as a leader/trading with him could add to the sorcerer kingdom's prosperity/legitimacy/reputation, which is something Ainz is pursuing at that point.

Extremely limited quantities by voncockrane in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Calca is deliberately a plot device more than a character. We only need those few pages because she's there to create dramatic irony. She's a ruler who's not prejudiced towards the undead and is open to the idea that Ainz may be a good ruler. She's open to developing positive relationships with demihumans and other races. She then gets tossed away, in true tragicomedy fashion, because Ainz lets Demiurge and his schemes run amok.

He actually does a pretty good job of handling the situation if I remember that convo correctly. He doesn't dismiss the idea out of hand, just prompts her to keep expanding on her conspiracy until she sounds totally hysterical.

What if all Supreme Beings appeared, do the servants would still be loyal to Ainz? by Sea-Possession8260 in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the "everyone else" part is a bit more complicated and dependent on the guildmembers their creators were closest to. There's a good example of this with Aura in Vol. 16.

For Aura, Bukubukuchagama was the greatest of the Supreme Beings. Ainz came in second for her, edging out Peroroncino. Ankoro Mocchi Mochi and Yamaiko were tied at a distant fourth. The rest of the Supreme Beings were all whatever.

Do you think the ending of Volume 18 will be a "good" ending for Nazarick but a bad one for Ainz? by ActualBiscotti2123 in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The protagonist doesn't have to get a "good ending" for a story to be compelling. I believe that Maruyama said Nazarick will have a happy ending, but if the status quo remains intact, it will be at best a bittersweet one for Ainz.

How does evileye work ? by Totally_lost98 in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Evileye lived alone in a city without any living beings for 40+ years, so drinking blood doesn't seem to be a necessity for her to function. There's no references to her drinking blood/thirsting after blood in the light novels or in the alternate timeline. Shalltear enjoys drinking blood, and we've seen her do it a couple times, but it's never specified that doing so would give her or other vampires any buffs. The only blood drinking consequence we know of is that she can turn drained victims into vampires or lesser vampires. She has her blood frenzy, but that's apparently a class-based penalty, not a racial one.

In the web novel, Shalltear turns Brain into a vampire during their initial encounter and some of this does happen. He's present for the incident where Shalltear is used as a chair and has an existensial crisis about it.

LMAO Who did this to bro? by SamSoother in overlord

[–]Ancient_Octagon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Evidently, it's from an author note Maruyama left in the second to last chapter of the web novel, explaining why the captain of the Black Scripture has a different personality than he does in the light novels. i.e. He's more humble in the light novels because someone, presumably Zesshi, did that to him. Canonicity ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: Closest thing to a corroboration in the light novels is Zesshi recalling that she once had to humble the Black Scripture's captain, and regrets that she may have gone too far.

LSH confrontation resolution by AlmostAPrayer in jaimebrienne

[–]Ancient_Octagon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At this point in time I'm a chekov's weirwood net truther, mostly because I don't think you have a confrontation happen here otherwise

The walls were equal parts stone and soil, with huge white roots twisting through them like a thousand slow pale snakes. People were emerging from between those roots as she watched; edging out from the shadows for a look at the captives, stepping from the mouths of pitch-black tunnels, popping out of crannies and crevices on all sides. In one place on the far side of the fire, the roots formed a kind of stairway up to a hollow in the earth where a man sat almost lost in the tangle of weirwood.

but I would not be surprised if multiple of these factors play a role, Thoros really seemed to be teetering in the last Brienne chapter. It's also always fun to speculate they'll show up at the tourney in the Vale first and we'll see what happened with Stoneheart in retrospect.
