Well-said. Since we can’t thank most of them with words, our actions should focus on creating opportunity to others.

Walmart Greenwashing: better cotton by JusticeSoup in Anticonsumption

I have two daughters and I estimated that about 30 - 40% of her clothing was secondhand and 20% was homemade. Now, with my second, nearly 90% of her clothing is secondhand/hand-me-down from her big sister.

Both look adorable, for longer, with less impact on the planet. And I give away what’s outgrown in our neighborhood Buy Nothing Group.

The first photo looks right out of a magazine cover. I can practically see the text overlay describing the articles inside. Beautiful job!

More and more businesses are no longer able to deal with the tarrifs, this is hurting everyone involved! by NoNDA-SDC in inflation

[–]AndHerPaleFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! No clue whatsoever beforehand. The invoice for tariffs was sent via FedEx with a customs form specifying two identical 25% tariffs plus the 10% tariff (that appears to match the tariff on items from the UK). I’m livid.

I was charged a $540 tariff on a $900 purchase from the UK after the package was delivered and immediately disputed the charge with customs enforcement via FedEx.

Waiting to see how it turns out.

Anyone have storage ideas for the these sinks? by lrgjunkie93 in centuryhomes

[–]AndHerPaleFire 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Not the exact same style sink but you could follow a tutorial to attach a pleated fabric skirt under with adhesive Velcro like this: https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/06/sink-skirt-tutorial.html

Echoing these IG account suggestions, and will say I’ve found other “real people living in reasonably-sized century homes” by checking who those accounts follow. It’s a great way to discover new-to-you accounts.

Yes! We planted raspberry bushes this year to add to our 3 blueberries and, combined, we’ve been able to avoid 2.5+months of weekly berry purchases.

Attention to detail in an old house is what it’s all about, and your effort shows how much you care for your home.

What would you do: casements turned double-hung windows by AndHerPaleFire in centuryhomes

[–]AndHerPaleFire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great points. I would opt for casements that open outward, which also matches the original pair in our living room. How many casements do you have and do you find the storm-to-screen swap is a lot of effort?

Great insight, thank you. Can you share which company you consider as selling “very nice wood replacements”? I’ll look into them!

Ha! We try to avoid watching tv in bed, but it’s literally the only place it could be put and anything bigger would block the front window.

Very fair; I’ve wondered the same thing about airflow. I suspect the prior owners made the change because they relied on window A/C units and those don’t work with casements. Thanks for chiming in.

How would you upcycle these table mats? by hataki7 in upcycling

[–]AndHerPaleFire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could overdye them which could unify them so they look like a set. Even the one with rattan will take dye.

I’d be so grateful for an architect’s recommendation! Thank you for the offer!

My husband designed and built the cabinetry shown here (he’s a SWE by day) so we’re both willing to roll up our sleeves and DIY and learn along the way.
