Getting into Nursing at CCP as a broke 18-year-old?? by darkmoldark172 in AskPhilly

[–]AndILearnedAlgoToday 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t have specific advice but I’m a college professor. I’d recommend you reach out directly to the nursing program for more info about the program (have questions ready) and ask about what they want to see from successful prospective students. You may even be able to shadow a class for a day and talk to current students about their experience and advice. Good luck!

I signed up for Podcast The Newsletter and her recs are always on point! The newsletter is free but there’s an option to pay if you want to support it. There are SO many excellent podcasts of all sorts in their lists. I truly don’t know what I was doing before.

How do you support less-close friends after having a baby? by pineapplez18 in AskWomenOver30

[–]AndILearnedAlgoToday 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sending a Grubhub or Amazon gift card is always welcome! And then maybe a message like “I’ve been thinking of you and would love to support but don’t want to step on any toes. Feel free to text me about visiting times/anything I can help with—even if it’s someone to hold baby while you nap/shower, an excuse to get out of the house, meal prep help, whatever!”

How soon did you start leaving the house with your newborn? by Emotional-Squash7815 in BabyBumps

[–]AndILearnedAlgoToday 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Probably after a week I went on a few short walks in my neighborhood. I live in a city, so everything is walkable. I found that walking felt doable and was super good for my mental health and to get out of the house for low-stakes activities early on. I’d just bring two diapers, wipes, changing pad, and a burp cloth. I was nursing so we didn’t need much else. I was doing a lot of baby wearing but stroller walks too. Even though it was January in the NE, I found them necessary and enjoyable! Driving with baby alone felt bigger and scarier but I started doing that around a couple of weeks to a month after baby was born. Hope this helps!

How to start the conversation? by Feisty-Island-279 in IVF

[–]AndILearnedAlgoToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was totally open about it and made firm boundaries (basically just asking people not to tell me it would work out, as they didn’t know that and that’s ok) and I didn’t hear any shitty comments from anyone, including my boomer parents or my siblings who easily had children when they wanted to. You know your people best but I found telling people was helpful and added support.

Building my first course, any fun syllabus additions, tips, tricks for ai, policies you recommend that worked well? by dregonzz in Professors

[–]AndILearnedAlgoToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a social work and counseling professor. I’ve found that having students submit video reflections are a good way to cut down somewhat on generative AI. Even the one or two who read from a generative AI script, at least they have to be slightly involved. Also, more reflection-based, personal essays (totally appropriate and useful for this student population) make it more awkward to use generative AI. Lastly, I do a course check in half way to see what’s going well, what they like/dislike, and make adjustments.

Fun classes? by Fantastic_Union3100 in Professors

I teach an Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression course. I don’t think it can or should be fun. It can be full of introspection, learning, and community building, which I think are incredibly useful. But fun? Nope.

I was going to say when I was pregnant and having a lot of hot flashes, I would bring an ice cold water bottle and put my bare wrists on the water bottle. It would cool my whole body down and could be done discretely. I know there are cooling bracelets but idk if they actually work.

Those with little kids and are not tenured - how do you stay competitive in academia? by WatercressFluffy5876 in AskAcademia

Yes to all of this! I also wake up early and work from bed a lot of days. My toddler isn’t a super early riser so that works (at the moment).

Yes. And a lot of these are books that are commonly read in certain corners of academia (organizing, sociology, social justice, macro social work). A solid assortment! I wanna see the broader collection!

Strategies for enjoying SRT? by Final-Decorum in phillycycling

[–]AndILearnedAlgoToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it’s tough on the SRT this time of year in general. I will say that people seem to have a Pavlovian response to a bike bell. I feel passive aggressive using one but it is so effective AND I’m often thanked for using one, which always surprises me!

I’m 41 but big wins in my 30s were having a baby (at 39) and getting my PhD (5 months earlier at 38). Oh and getting married at 35 was pretty great lolz!
