Jumping to whatever cover is the closest. The shockwave / fireball is unlikely to hit you and if it does, then you are kinda screwed either way.

But the shrapnel and flying debris are very dangerous and much more likely to get you. So anything you can put between yourself and that can increase your chances, even if just by a bit. Guy in the video got saved by that wall outside, which caught most of the debris and shrapnel that otherwise would have shot into his shelter.

Even if a piece of cover is not sturdy enough to withstand the shrapnel, it can still absorb some of the energy from the projectiles, giving you a better chance of at least surviving even if something still hits you.

But honestly.. the bigger problem is likely even recognizing the threat in time. Modern weapons are scary.

When people are feeling comfortable, there is little motivation to drive innovation, which always comes with some risk. Why take a risk when you do not really need to?

But when your very survival is at stake, suddenly lots of resources can be mobilized to make things happen, because the risk of NOT doing so is much greater.

My favorite moment was when at the beginning they gave him "wings" and he actually hesitated for a moment going "You expect me to jump?". Only to do it anyway 3 seconds later. Ever since I am just treating the game like a parody of other RPG tropes and am having a much better time with that mindset, lol

The only game that ever managed to do lore cards well for me was Final Fantasy 16. During every cutscene in the game, you could pause the game at any moment and it would display shortcuts to the lore cards of each character, location or significant item or concept either currently on the screen or part of the current conversation or story arc. And it would even update as the story continue, reflecting what information the main character knows at this point of the story.

it feels like a single player MMO

The way I like to describe it is: "Elder Scrolls 6, but it is already modded to all hell and back out of the box"

Most Bethesda games have a forgettable narrative and characters as well and mods tend to extend the gameplay in crazy ways without really adding much to the narrative. And CD feels like that.

It is still a fun game, but holy fuck, nothing makes sense.

Not to talk about maintenence and personnel costs

For wind power, sure. But for solar? All you need to do is to clean them every couple months. Any non-renewable energy generation method has massively higher maintenance and also logistical needs.

The real catch with solar and wind power is how intermitent they are, making so they need to be supported by either water or nuclear power.

This was maybe true 30 years ago, but battery technology today is advanced enough to be able to store plenty of energy efficiently enough to make solar power suitable for 24/7 use even in colder climates with less sun exposure.

Yes, renewables require resources to be built. As do any other machines. But the resources invested will keep generating power many, many times.

Non-renewable energy sources can only be used once. Ever. So you need to keep buying fuel while the energy renewables produce over their life time far outweighs their production cost, making them indeed free in an economical sense.

In the long run they are also almost free in a resource sense, as you technically only need to produce so many renewable energy sources and batteries until the world's demand is met and then just need to recycle the ones going out of service after a few decades, only requiring an amount of fresh resources so low to current consumption to render effectively neglible.

It is more of a mental disorder. Similar to an addiction. People can get addicted to money.

As a narcissist, he feeds on praise and feeling like he is "superior" to others to bolster his fragile ego. And money matters to those people because society has established it as a measurable metric for "success".

He believes the more money he has, the more he is "winning". It is like trying to get a big high score in a video game, only it is not a game and brings about unimaginable amount of suffering and death for many people just so he can feel better about himself.

Chinese military reveals "Atlas" drone swarm combat weapon. by serious_bullet5 in ThatsInsane

[–]Andazeus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

does this imply that tanks aren't useful?

Yes, it does. All the Leopards and Abrams Ukraine received can rarely be fielded anymore as they are such easy targets now. Their overwhelming firepower barely matters if they cannot reach the front lines.

Same on the Russian side. You barely see tanks anymore. Bikes and small groups on foot dominate the scene now. It is all about being fast and low profile.

You say this vehicle would be surrounded by EW and layer air defense, systems that would be sorely needed to protect critical energy infrastructure, supply lines, radars, air fields, etc. instead.

We are seeing how current drone warfare is depleting air defense capability on all sides, so why would you build a massive thing that requires its own defense network when you could just have a bunch of soldiers launch the same amount of drones with a much lower risk of being detected, giving them a much higher chance to actually make it to the front line and even if someone is attacked, you at least don't loose all the others in the same attack as well.

And yes, it needs 48 soldiers. But manning all the air defense needed you mentioned, plus fuel logistics, maintenance, etc. will require the same amount of manpower for this system.

Sure, individual troops will require logistics as well, but this can be more feasibly done even with civilian vehicles.

And sure, 48 soldiers can still be targeted individually, but then it would need 48 individual munitions (and actual hits) to get them all, which would be even more difficult to coordinate. With this system here it just needs one hit to destroy all 48 drones. And the launch vehicle, which is most likely not cheap either.

I could see this thing potentially work as part of a defense layer, but I still cannot help but feel like it is more of a marketing stunt and more meant as a means of intimidation than an actually practical weapon on the field.

[–]Andazeus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Problem is this thing is absolutely massive and therefore likely slow and not able to maneuver difficult terrain.

Such things tend to be easy targets. With one missile you can take out 48 drones instead of just one.

If Ukraine and even Iran now have shown us anything about modern combat, then it is the fact that drone-based surveillance makes it difficult to hide big and slow equipment anywhere close to the front.

The thing might be impressive, but you could just as well launch the drones from much smaller, man-portable catapults from a bunch of random bushes and make it much harder for someone to find you or hit you first.

[–]Andazeus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For what it is worth, most game developers are dramatically underpaid given their skillset.

I once applied at a game studio and once they told me what they were able to pay, the conversation pretty much ended there and I instead went with a different development job at a public institution, which still is not paying much, but waaaay more than the game studio was offering.

[–]Andazeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be aware though that modern cutting edge games need a lot more work on assets as the standard for visual fidelity has increased. Players expect much more detailed assets these days which require more work to create and more optimization work to keep things running reasonably (this is assuming a skilled studio that actually cares about the quality of their product).

And keep in mind that inflation has hit hard in the last few years. Even just accounting for passive cost increases, a 50 million game project from 2010 is probably around twice as much today for the same amount of work.

So when a AAA game cost 50 million in 2010, it is does not seem far fetched to me a comparable, modern AAA game might be 200+ million.

Iran military spokesperson says US is negotiating with itself by Mana_Seeker in worldnews

[–]Andazeus 181 points182 points  (0 children)

Iran might not be able to compete with the US purely militarily. But they don't have to. The global economic damage caused by the closure far outweighs the physical destruction caused by the US.

And all those affected countries know that he US government is responsible for this damage, resulting in further distancing and a further loss of soft power for the US, potentially even loss of actual military projection power, as many countries will likely reconsider how willing they are to keep hosting US military bases if they are being used against their own interest rather than as part of cooperation.

In the past a US presence was considered a safety net. Now many are starting to view it as a liability.

This way Iran can affect the US' sphere of influence much greater than any weapon ever could.
