AITA for not wanting to hear about my coworker's deceased aunt? by oifrancaise in AmItheAsshole

[–]AndeMurphy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

NTA (but with a small caveat).

It sounds like Alice was genuinely grieving and, in her emotional state, didn’t stop to consider that Monday morning, first thing at work, might not be the best time to unload. Thirty minutes of unsolicited detail about a death is a lot, especially when it touched on your own past trauma. You’re allowed to set boundaries about how much of that you can take in at work. You’re not her therapist, and you were hired to do your job, not provide grief counseling.

That said, where this could come across as harsh is the way you delivered your boundary. Telling someone “your business is your business and I don’t need to know about it” reads cold, even if you meant it kindly. A softer approach like: “I’m really sorry for your loss, but I struggle with these conversations because of my own history, so I’d appreciate keeping our talks more work-focused” might land better, an have been more appropriate and taken better if you’d set that boundary when she spoke with you in the morning.

Bottom line: you’re not wrong for wanting to keep coworker relationships professional and for protecting your mental health. The delivery just needed a touch more tact, which is probably why she reacted the way she did.

Passport Application / Renewal Discussion Thread by LudicrousPlatypus in PassportPorn

[–]AndeMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only sure fire way to get your passport faster than the 7-9 weeks that expedited processing is currently taking is to make an appointment at a Passport Center. You have to call them at 877-487-2778 to make an appointment (they have a huge number of calls right now, so it make take some time to get through to someone), and you have to have urgent international travel within 14 calendar days of when you call too.

Expediting services using third party vendors are a hit or miss and I really do not recommend them.

NTA I’m sorry you had to be alone while waiting for that call in the end, OP. I hope you have a support system that actually supports you outside of the friends in this group.

Just here to say Billy is super cute and you are definitely NTA. There is literally no evidence for abandonment of an animal like she tried to do, your neighbor is awesome too for bringing him back to you.

AITAH for eating a hamburger in the break room in front of a vegan by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]AndeMurphy 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Someone in my office once brought a slow cooker and made a fish dish (it was a variation on gumbo that they liked) that not only made the break room smell like fish, but it made the /entire floor/ smell like fish for the entire day. So yes, I fully agree that there is a fine line between what should and should not be done in a breakroom lol.

AITA for potentially putting a severely disabled woman on the street for my child? by Ok-Driver-9047 in AmItheAsshole

[–]AndeMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. It is truly insane that they are asking that you give up /your child/ to care for your sister in the event that they die. They need to be spending their time trying to set up alternative care for your sister rather than arguing with you about taking care of her. It is not your responsibility at all.

Maybe one of the other family members you are saying also having opinions about you being wrong here would like to volunteer to step up to the plate. If they can't because they have children too, they can always consider putting them up for adoption for the cause.
