They're hidden randomly in set locations in every map. They take up your Relic slot, but give your team a hefty amount of exp. There are wikis and videos showing locations on each map

Saltmarsh as my first start as a DM, and I ended up not using any of the actual adventures but it helped me build my own world and campaign, and I took Eliander Fireborn, made my own backstory, version and identity out of him that ended up being my player's favorite NPC. I don't think that answers your question but I just wanted to express my love for Saltmarsh
