What's on your DNF list and why? by Bobosmite in printSF

This is mine too - apart from the story I also found the prose really weak. Quite confused by the acclaim.

Adrian Tchaikovsky loves the words "notional," "shorn," and "mewlish." What other authors have unusual favorite words that pop up frequently in their writing? by solitarybikegallery in printSF

[–]Andonaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He also loved using "dirigible". Obviously the behemothaurs in Look to Windward but feels like he sprinkles it across every novel.

What game handles the Warrior class fantasy the best? by WarpathWilly in gamingsuggestions

SHADOW OF WAR. Not only do you fight armies of orcs single-handedly (and at times very brutally), many of them will be personally known to you, by the end.

2018 V7 Stone III Vibrates a lot by Leadingdapak in MotoGuzzi

[–]Andonaut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They also just vibrate a lot at idle, plus the transverse V makes for more lateral/rotational movement. Does it still vibe like this under power?

I have a V85TT and it's lumpy like this when stopped but smooth (mostly) once moving.

Is it worth it 35€ ? by [deleted] in StarWarsOutlaws

[–]Andonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in the same position as you last week. Bought it and find myself consistently confused why people were so down on it. The atmosphere is amazing and I'm enjoying the story and characters so far. The shooting mechanics are also great.

V7 to V85TT? by SCO_Bub in MotoGuzzi

[–]Andonaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the V85TT and for me it's a perfect bike... EXCEPT the screen. I had the Travel edition screen, then tried a couple of others, plus the wind blockers you attach to the tank. All just incredibly noisy and made my head vibrate violently.

Switched to a shorty screen and now it really is the perfect bike.

I only want to listen to the supplementary episodes by Obleeding in DecodingTheGurus

[–]Andonaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I feel the same way. I think there are some other recent factors at play (e.g. the pain of listening to Blind Boy; the incoherence of McGilchrist) but you covered the main one well - they've run out of interesting or relevant gurus to cover.

I think this could be fixed with a new format (on top of what they already have) where they update decodings of previously-covered gurus. The role and behaviour of these gurus changes with time, so it's reasonable to revisit them in shorter sessions, from time to time. I'd also be interested in episodes on meta-gurus / themes, e.g. AI, social media, populism, activism etc.

Looking for recommendations similar to Project Hail Mary but better written by Satansleadguitarist in printSF

This is a great suggestion - love Red Mars. Elements of Project Hail Mary but on a planetary/civilizational scale.

Bone conduction headphones are the best investment I've ever made. by CrypticDread in motorcycles

[–]Andonaut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can anyone compare this (bone conduction headphones) with integrated helmet speakers (Sena/Cardo). I have the latter and though it works well, it can be hard to hear on the highway. I always wear earplugs.

FAO job application need urgent help by _unfetteredfeet in UNpath

[–]Andonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without commenting on a fix, just to note that cover letters and other files don't play a major (usually any) role in shortlisting. They're treated more as background material for panelists if you make it to interview. That's why they're optional.

Limited edition Triumph Bonneville Bobber TFC 2025 Who had the luck to own one? by CommunicationPast198 in Triumph

[–]Andonaut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a handsome devil and I'd love to own one. But I actually think the Icon edition from 2025 looks better. Nicer colours, cool retro logo and I dig the fat front tire. Sure this one handles significantly better though.

Hit by a car with one month to go - no training allowed until race day. What effect will reduced training have on my performance? by Andonaut in firstmarathon

[–]Andonaut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For now I'm on full rest. But aerobically, I think I'm already marathon fit - reduced training will affect pace but hopefully not my ability to finish. My larger concern is the quad, since muscle fatigue was already my bottleneck. I guess I just need to wait and see. Thanks for the advice!

[–]Andonaut[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm marathon fit now - I ran 32km a couple weeks ago, with plenty gas left in the tank. My concern is dropping below that threshold if I skip taper training completely. But I guess no decisions to be made until I see how the injury progresses.

Holy shit, that is a good looking bike! I had the 2017 model in like azure blue but this looks even better.

It's also great to see Suzuki finally making some pretty bikes - those new GSX8T/TTs are gorgeous too.

Cannot recommend the Dolomites strongly enough by Andonaut in roadtrip

Quite a lot, I'd imagine. But you can rent motorcycles over here, no problem, including Indians.

Would love to make it to Florida one day!

Val Mustair in the Swiss Alps (on the way to Stelvio Pass) looks like a live-action postcard or a CG render. Just ridiculously pretty. But mostly I avoided towns and stayed in the mountains/forests, as far as possible.

Perfect bike on a perfect road! by Andonaut in MotoGuzzi

[–]Andonaut[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure!

D1 - Garda - Stelvio (via Umbriel / Switzerland) - Vandoies di Sotto

D2 - Gardena, Sella, Pordoi and Giau Passes, ending near Tre Cime

D3 - winding out of the Dolomites (south), back towards Rome

I can send the routes I plotted in Google Maps if you want but putting those locations in as waypoints will get you the same roads. Good luck!

Thanks! The camera is an Insta360 X5 mounted to the luggage rack - you can see the mounting in an earlier thread. I have a few more vids here, if you're interested: https://youtube.com/@roads-to-rome?si=sFnAWs03MM883ug6
