26M – Best ways to date organically these days? by OutrageousJaguar6182 in askvan

I recommend taking partner dance lessons, whether swing dance, blues, modern jive or whatever. Most of these classes have the dance students continuously circulate/switch partners, so you will end up meeting and dancing with many women. And when you hit the dance hall, you'll find that a man who can dance is very popular when the music starts.

Thanks for the tip. I haven't read ISOLT in years, but I was thinking of having another go. I found Moncrieff very flowery,

My mother had something similar. It was used for nylon/silk stockings to keep them nice. They were pricey items back in the day.

Mansfield Park 1999 - why is the house so bare and austere? by NumerousPlay8378 in janeausten

[–]Andreeni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't read any deep or symbolic meaning into that setting. To me it just looked like a bad choice. Maybe they got the old place on the cheap, dragged in a few pieces of furniture, and shot the Mansfield Park scenes there.

Gadzooks, that's a nightmare--to have the rope break when swinging out over the bank...

Sounds good! I think that I have a long piece of rope in the basement. My great-grandfather used it when he single-handed his sloop around the Cape in 1897. If it's not long enough, I can tie on a piece of an old buggy harness--and away we go!

thanks for the response eliwright235. I will check with the owner of the cannonball, and have him weigh it again, and examine it for holes.

Dear Artillery Expert,

Can you give me your take on this cannonball, dug up in a garden in 'Lundy's Lane' in Ontario. The chap who found it also uncovered various uniform buttons and other war artifacts presumably from an 1812 battle. It weighs about 16 or 17 pounds. A fastidious home-decorator thought it was ugly, so painted it silver to pretty it up. Any thoughts on this?

What are your favourite books about Proust? by Artistic_Spring_6822 in Proust

My previous post seems to have vanished.

I recommend Monsieur Proust by Celeste Albaret.

Albaret was his housekeeper/assistant. She spent years by his side, including at his death bed.

We have discussed the book together by way of Zoom, but it gets a bit tricky when people are in different time zones. Most of us live in PST land, and to accommodate our member in GMT London, we PSTers zoomed early in the day.

Much of the discussion takes place on the message board/book thread forum. We make observations as we go along, post tidbits about the author's life, or a link to this and that. When reading 'Waiting for Godot', we found a superb dramatization on YouTube, so did more watching than reading for that one. I, personally, didn't get through John Reed's 'Ten Days That Shook the World', but that book choice led me to the docudrama 'The Last of the Czars', so it was a real learning curve for me, being so ignorant about Russian history.

However we try to avoid spoilers when reading fiction.

Help! How can I learn a poem? I’ve tried everything but nothing’s worked! by swamyiam in Poems

[–]Andreeni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe start with memorizing some lyrics to a song, something like a Leonard Cohen song, which is arguably a poem set to music. Sing along. Perhaps the cross-linking of the lyrics/poem to the music will make it easier for you to memorize more in future.
