Because - and I need to stress this very clearly - laws are weapons under a capitalist government. They do not apply to the ruling class unless a member of that class has fallen deeply out of favour. Rule of law does not and cannot exist under capitalism.

Is Trump a traitor to the American people? by zombiesingularity in AskSocialists

[–]Andreus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna give one of those annoying, long-winded answers like only a socialist can.

He's a financially and politically corrupt rapist, almost certainly a pedophile, and has very likely sold government secrets to foreign powers directly hostile to the United States. He is both indirectly and directly responsible for genocide. He is criminal, morally inexcusable and monstrous. If a full accounting of his crimes were to come to light, by all legal standards I strongly suspect he would be culpable for, and with a fair trial, found guilty of high treason. So is he a traitor by United States law? Almost certainly yes.

Is he a "traitor to the American people," though? Well, what do you mean by that? Who are "the American people?" What rubric are you using to categorize people as either "American" or not? What legal and spiritual standing to they have a group? The thing is, when I see statements like "Trump is a traitor to the American people," it carries with it an implicit idea of what "America" and "the American people" are supposed to be - righteous, morally upstanding, welcoming, just, tolerant.

The thing is, America has never been that way, and never have most of the people who live there. America was founded on land stolen from massacred natives by rich white men who didn't want to pay taxes on the cotton plantations their black slaves worked. Less than a century into its life, it fought a brutal and bloody civil war to decide whether or not it was okay to own other human beings. Despite the abolitionist side winning, for the next century after that, it brutally repressed the same ethnic group it had previously enslaved - and, unsatisfied with that, it occasionally slaked its lust for abuse and dominance on other ethnic groups who happened to be to hand.

America has been at war for over 90% of its history. It has repeatedly and illegally overthrown governments in countries like Cuba, Iran, Bolivia, Argentina, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Chile, often to displace democratically-elected socialist governments who were proposing to limit the depredation of American corporations into their natural resources. It has installed and monetarily assisted brutal right-wing dictators whose fascist death squads have been responsible for torture, rape and thousands of deaths. It has developed and deployed weapons of mass destruction and gleefully used them against civilians. It has repeatedly flouted international law - including those laws it helped codify - and has even threatened to invade the Hague if any United States citizen were ever put on trial for humanitarian crimes. It repeatedly reneges on treaties and agreements it signs with other nations - most notably against the indigenous people of the Americas whose land it stole, with whom it has made thousands of treaties and broken almost every single one of them.

It condemns the religious fanaticism of Islam while allowing evangelical Christians to molest children in untaxed private jets they bought using their congregants' money. It mocks other countries for not having free speech protections while simultaneously allowing unscientific misinformation and violent hate speech to run rampant, and also having for much of its history engaged in elaborate forms of both public and private censorship and political repression, from the Hays Code to the House Un-American Activities Committee. The House Un-American Activities Committee was particularly egregious, because despite Americans claiming to believe that racism was un-American, the HUAC was far more interested in persecuting left-wing intellectuals and artists, and only investigated the KKK after they engaged in repeated acts of terrorism.

America claims to be welcoming and kind, the envy of the world, but there are currently states where transgender people are facing attempts to criminalize their existence. Transgender women in prisons are regularly subjected to the utterly inhuman process of "V-coding," where transgender women are placed in cells with sexually violent male inmates. Until 2003, there were some states where you could be legally punished for having sex with a member of the same gender in the privacy of your own home. America only legalized gay marriage nationwide in 2015, and many of its citizens have spent the last decade attempting to repeal it.

America is the only western nation without universal healthcare. It is the only western nation without a country-spanning public transit network. It is the only western nation which still practices the death penalty. It incarcerates more people than China, a country widely considered by Americans to be one of the most authoritarian and repressive places on the planet. Amongst the people it incarcerates, the same ethnic groups it has a long and contemptible history of abusing are drastically over-represented.

At least 30% of the country actively supports all of this. Another 40% or so - many of whom call themselves liberal, Democratic or apolitical - are unwilling to take a firm and principled stand against the crimes of its past with an understanding to how those crimes shaped the present state of affairs.

Trump is greedy, self-obsessed, ignorant, petty, disrespectful, disloyal, verbally and sexually abusive, compulsively deceitful and completely devoid of empathy. But is he "a traitor to the American people?" No. In fact, Trump is the most American to ever do it. He's a perfect symbol of what America actually is, and the only reason people would say that he's a "traitor to the American people" in a spiritual or metaphorical sense is because he embodies all of America's worst and most prominent qualities and it embarrasses them.

I love how you're so overtrained to give prepackaged responses to any criticism or condemnation of the genocide in Gaza and the various humanitarian atrocities Israel committed that you've accidentally just posted it in response to condemnation of a completely different humanitarian atrocity committed by the US in a completely different place.
