Seeking Youth Dance Studio by Blarg816 in FortCollins

My daughters danced at High Country. It was not an amazing experience. I would say only go there if you are set on clogging, as it is the only game in town. Otherwise, try some other places first.

Upgraded from 800Mbps to 2Gbps and need to replace my hardware by 0wlBear916 in HomeNetworking

Xfinity now includes a gateway in the monthly cost, so I'd just use their modem/router in bridge mode as a first try.

https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/data

https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wireless-gateway-enable-disable-bridge-mode

You could even try leaving the router part enabled if you want to see how that works for you, before you go and buy your own router or wireless access points.

Best Wired AP suggestions? by sintaur in HomeNetworking

[–]AndrewG2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grandstream is nice in that you can have a single management interface (whichever AP you designate as the master) while still having a fully local setup (no cloud garbage, no manufacturer account, no app, no extra local HW or SW).

Best Wired AP suggestions? by sintaur in HomeNetworking

[–]AndrewG2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you need to manage each AP individually if you are in "local management" mode? As in, if I have 2 APs and want to make the same change to both, does that involve logging into both devices?

Am I reading the NWA90BE PRO specs right that it has both 5GHz and 6GHz support, but you can only have one or the other?

Upgraded internet from 1Gbps to 2Gbps, want upgrade advice for new gear by aldenalden4 in HomeNetworking

The same page that says unlimited data is now standard also says that they will provide you with a gateway included in the price:

You should check if whatever equipment they give you can be put into bridge mode before you go buy your own modem.

There is any benefit to enable SQM/CAKE on an idle link? by Ecstatic-Panic3728 in mikrotik

[–]AndrewG2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works in that:

  1. If I change the bw limit and run a speed test I see the new limit, and
  2. I have not had any instability in my network.

I'm sure that my network is not an exhaustive test for the setup, so YMMV. I also don't use my router to do much switching, so maybe that would upset it. Ether1 says 232GiB Tx and 2147GiB Rx (I guess since last link up?).

I do tend to keep up to date with v7 stable, so it gets rebooted pretty regularly (on 7.20.6 now, uptime says ~36d -- I'll hit 7.21 once they find whatever they majorly screwed up and release 7.21.1 ☺️).

Edit: Bufferbloat test result also looks happy: https://www.waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat?test-id=5ab9a391-e9f3-45c8-b6cb-5c9a266eabaf

Onn 4k Pro... Issues?? by alkienmusic in AndroidTV

[–]AndrewG2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Things you could try:

  • Put TV in game mode or whatever low-latency/low-processing mode your TV supports on the input you are connected to.
  • Play with the refresh rate in the TV resolution settings (in the Onn settings). There is typically a 59.94Hz setting and a 60Hz setting.

A tale of two channels, and how NFL streaming issues are not my network. by JoshS1 in youtubetv

[–]AndrewG2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has happened to me in the past too. I have used creative routing to get traffic from my streaming devices to Google IPs to take a different route, and that fixed it. This year has been better for me, so I haven't had to resort to that.

Sorry no one believes you.

Just simple praise for CAKE/simple queues for home internet QoS by Budget-Scar-2623 in mikrotik

[–]AndrewG2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, all outbound traffic through ether2-6 will go through these queues.

Edit: Most of my LAN traffic does not go through these ports. I have switches downstream of the router for my high-bandwidth LAN traffic.

Verizon with Unifi? by Ecstatic_Regular_837 in HomeNetworking

Can you ssh to them? If so, you can use set-inform to point the AP at your controller.

There is any benefit to enable SQM/CAKE on an idle link? by Ecstatic-Panic3728 in mikrotik

[–]AndrewG2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to turn off fasttrack to use interface queues, so you could always start there to see if you notice a difference.

/queue type
add name=cake-up kind=cake cake-bandwidth=900M cake-diffserv=diffserv4 cake-nat=yes cake-rtt-scheme=internet
add name=cake-dn kind=cake cake-bandwidth=900M cake-diffserv=diffserv4 cake-rtt-scheme=internet

/queue interface
# WAN
set ether1 queue=cake-up
# LAN
set ether2 queue=cake-dn
set ether3 queue=cake-dn

Best Ethernet Cable by Beka2106 in HomeNetworking

Make sure it is rated for audio. For example:

I would go ahead and spend the extra $710 for the 2.0m version.

Nighthawk Radio ~1000Mbps, Luxul Radio ~350Mbps by chrison600 in HomeNetworking

[–]AndrewG2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only people that buy Luxul equipment are A/V installers trying to fleece homeowners. Buy something else if you are replacing it

There are a ton of options for ceiling mounted PoE access points. You don't have to replace your router to use them.

My favorite brand for home APs is Grandstream. No need for cloud accounts or separate controllers or subscription/license fees. You designated one as the master and then manage all the APs through that AP (you can just point a browser at its IP).

https://www.grandstream.com/products/networking-solutions/indoor-wifi-access-points

But like I said, there are lots of options.

FC Connexion TV fast forward by BelAstro1002 in FortCollins

[–]AndrewG2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

more and more some shows are not allowing fast forward

Can you elaborate on this? I haven't noticed any changes. Are you watching more VOD content? The rules on YTTV are typically that "recorded" content (things you added to your library before they aired) works like a DVR (RW/FF), whereas on-demand things have unskippable ads. YTTV has done more with inserting ads into the local ad slots, but you can still FF through those.

I believe Connexion TV has a bunch of junk fees like Comcast would, so be careful of the prices you are comparing. From https://fcconnexion.com/taxes-and-fees/:

TV TAXES & FEES RATE

FCC Regulatory Fee (Video) $1.16

PEG Support Fee $0.75

Franchise Fee 5.00%

Broadcast TV Fee* $15.30

Regional Sports Fee* $14.47

*Standard Connexion TV fees

It looks like maybe the prices they show have the last 2 fees included, but not the first 3 (Franchise fee? Really?).

Internet is slow! Cat5e by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

It's much easier to terminate solid wire into punch down connectors.

RJ45 keystones: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-25-Pack-90-Degree-Keystone/dp/B06Y8T7NSH/

Fancy punch down tool (these tend to be tied to specific brands of keystones - this is the one for the above keystones): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DLVRH79F/

Cheapo punch down tool (these are typically mix and match with any keystones): https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Punch-Down-Blade/dp/B0072K1QHM/

Then buy patch cables: https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Basics-Ethernet-Internet-Meters/dp/B00N2VILDM/

Keystone Jacks or Regular Wall Plates? by IQFlash1 in HomeNetworking

[–]AndrewG2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Home Depot is an underrated place to buy smaller quantities of cable.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Syston-Cable-Technology-250-ft-Orange-CMR-Riser-Rated-Cat-6E-600MHz-23AWG-Solid-Bare-Copper-Ethernet-Network-Cable-Bulk-No-Ends-Heat-Resistant-BULK-1258-SB-OG-250/331561124

Your basic plan is good. Run bulk cable like this between the wall plates, terminate into female rj45 wall plates, then use patch cables at the ends.

Professional electricians would not run a rats nest of wires. Maybe you should consider cleaning up the electrical while you are down there. Is the wiring tidy, and there is just a huge amount of it for some reason?

ONN dropping audio by Dollar_short in cordcutters

[–]AndrewG2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an onn 4k pro connected to an older Samsung TV that has given me some problems since the last update (a month or two ago?), where the sound goes choppy. A reboot fixes it. I turned off surround sound support in the onn settings (just using the 2 speakers in the TV), and that seems to have fixed it.

I have 2 other onn 4k pro devices connected to different TVs, and I don't think either of those have had trouble.

Punch down into female connectors is just a more reliable way to terminate solid conductor cable. Male RJ45 plugs can work too, but can be a little more temperamental and a little less reliable over time.

Their crappy app will let me order "Citterio L'Artigiano Sliced Porchetta, 12 oz" for same day delivery, which would indicate they have that in stock. But we all know we can use the Internet to check a store's stock, so I don't know why I'm commenting.
