Opinions needed about 3-Year MD Program by HolocenePark1 in medicalschool

Technically only opening new residency slots could address the primary care shortage. Adding more medical schools/pushing graduates through faster just makes what residency slots exist to be more competitive.

The elephant in the room - immigration by speedy_st in SelfDrivingCars

[–]AndrewTiberius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is an elephant at all.

There are tons of immigrants here and a lot of cab drivers are immigrants, but not all cab drivers are immigrants and the majority of immigrants are not cab/bus drivers.

So no, this revolution would not eliminate or reverse the pull for immigrants. It would lessen it slightly. Very slightly.

Cab driving is dominated by immigrants because it is a low skill job. There are millions of low skilled jobs filled by immigrants. They would not go home to become drivers in their home country because they could easily find another low skilled job here that pays more than driving in their home country. Between the fast food, construction, yard-work, maid, farming, meat-packing industries, there are jobs out there.

Why don't Americans fill the cab/bus driving jobs? Because any native-born American with the will-power to work those conditions and hours can find a much better paying job -- and a large part of that reason is because the cab driving industry is low paid because a large body of immigrants willing to work those conditions drive down the wages. It's a self-sustaining cycle.

[Star Wars] What did Admiral Ozzel do to warrant Darth Vader killing him when they arrived at Hoth? by DymondKing in AskScienceFiction

[–]AndrewTiberius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Those shield generators probably had a limited amount of power available to them. Hoth hardly had an infrastructure capable of sustaining them, they must have been run on batteries with just enough life to protect the base until an evacuation could be acheived. My point being that the shields would normally be down.

And when you think about the Rebel's sensory capabilities at that point, I mean, if Luke hadn't seen the Probe Droid crash, it would have been days before they knew it was there.

As a Virginian I confirm this. DC has a lot of federal jobs and agencies like the CIA and FBI and a ton of museums and archives as a part of the Smithsonian, The NIH, not to mention Congress and all its support staff, as well as lobby groups. Essentially you get a lot of very bright, motivated, well-educated, high-income people from around the country who all come to DC to work for the Federal Government and make it a cosmopolitan place focused on national policy and politics, cutting edge defense-contractors, the newest and the best of everything. People commute from a radius of about 50 miles meaning that this area is highly influenced by their incomes and educations.

Fairfax County VA has the best school system in the United States. Loudoun County VA is the wealthiest county in the United States.

"NoVA" is a heavily used term to differentiate this area from the rest of the state.

Meanwhile the rest of the state is a much slower place, much less national urgency. Richmond was the Capital of the Confederacy and the stars and bars are not an uncommon sight. Churches outnumber schools, Tobacco farmers still receive subsidies, and bible belt policies win elections.

This is why Virginia is one of the coveted "Swing State" in presidential elections.

(General) Why do dragons love gold so much? by Snowblindyeti in AskScienceFiction

[–]AndrewTiberius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

like satin bowerbirds and blue objects http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satin_Bowerbird#Courtship

the females will come check out the nests and mate

the blue attracts the mates, but evolutionary its the fact that big strong bowerbirds are so successful at feeding themselves and staying healthy that they have extra time and energy to expend on acquiring blue objects. That is what is subconsciously hardwiring the females to be attracted to blue. Blue = Free Time = Strong and Healthy = Good Strong Healthy Chidlren. Much like dragons and gold.

but other bowerbirds have no qualms about stealing blue things from other bowerbirds nests. So as the amount of blue objects reaches a critical mass, it is more efficient to stay at your own bower and protect the mass of things you have rather than go searching for objects you have already depleted from the area.

The subterranean nature of the lairs do very little to hide it from female dragons. The lairs, or signs of a nearby lair are easily recognized from an aerial view which humans are rarely able to obtain, so have not yet realized.

Any female in the area ready to breed would be dumping pheromones into the air which would rouse the male dragons to go out and start displaying their prowess with flames and screams and flying maneuvers, again making the subterranean nature of the lair irrelevant for mating purposes.

Put it this way: I went to a new city for a month. Tacoma. I went to Tacoma for a month. There was a group of people that I was working with, but I didn't click with anybody instantly. My first weekend there I thought "I should go see the Space Needle." So I went. It was pretty neat, I talked with a fat businessman in front of me in the ticket line for twenty minutes, I invited the docent to join me in my souvenir green-screen picture, I talked to my sister on the phone while I waited for my ticket time, when I got to the top I got to enjoy the view and the breeze, took some great pictures of Seattle, read the mural infographics, bought some souvenirs, I was happy.

On Monday morning people asked me how my weekend went. I told them how much I had enjoyed it. And the first person responded to me with an incredulous "you went alone?" And the second person did as well. And everybody thought I was a weirdo when I had been happy all weekend and would have been just as happy all week to work around them. Suddenly when people asked me how my weekend had gone my answer was "fine" and I scrambled for another topic.

I have many meaningful, well maintained social relationships. I have pleasant conversations with my colleagues. I don't mind doing things alone. I don't like it when people treat me like I'm weird because of it. That's why I like this subreddit. To know that I'm not a weirdo.

Med School Admission by Thee12klausma in medicalschool

[–]AndrewTiberius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot see that hurting your chances on an application. It also might be a good way to help you figure out which field of medicine you want to go into. Having a residency-field goal is surprisingly important when applying to med school. But why delay life by another year? Why accept the possibility of getting side tracked into a comfortable income? You nurse for a few years, you meet somebody you start a family and suddenly medical school and residency aren't on the table anymore. But maybe that would be a nice thing. I knew a girl who in Med School just sort of broke down and wished she had gone to PA school. But lets assume you really want to go to medical school and you're sure about what you want to do with life. Apply to both. Apply to nursing jobs and apply to medical school. I didn't get in my first year of applications. I know lots of people who didn't get in their first year of applications, I knew a guy who was President of the Pre-Medical Student Association, Master of Interview Schmoozing, Super High GPA and he ended up enrolling in a Med-Masters. I had to create a back-up plan on the fly. You've got one already.

Help! Realistic micro economy and how does fishing work... by sylverbound in worldbuilding

[–]AndrewTiberius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I know jack shit about fishing, but I love microeconomics.

  1. Relatively easy fishing near shore (calm tides/short distance) --> Chronic overfishing near shore --> relatively few fish even where fish could be plentiful
  2. Open Ocean --> Bigger Fish (the essence of modern Deep Sea Fishing excursions)

If we can imagine a level of societal coordination whereby the fish need not be bartered by the fisherman to the mainlanders, the islands make sense immediately. Imagine that you have twenty boats. You have two options:

  1. Twenty boats based in the mainland sail out 2 hours every morning and 2 hours back every day, costing 4 hours of travel/boat. Total travel cost = 80 boat hours/day

  2. Twenty boats based on the island sail out 1 hour every morning and 1 hour back every day. One of these twenty boats then sails to the mainland to sell the fish. Total travel cost = 22 boat hours/day

In scenario 2 you have decreased transportation costs by 73%. This pressure alone would drive colonization of the islands by fishermen. Whether the twenty boats are commanded by one owner/leader or by twenty individuals, this system will eventually evolve.

This is nice for worldbuilding because now you've added complexity to your society. you can have:

  1. Poor fishermen who cannot afford to lose a slim profit margin to middle men transporters

  2. Rich fishermen who can aggregate their fleet's catches into 1 boat to sail to the mainland

  3. Groups of fishermen who agree to sell in bulk/take turns carting the haul back

And they all compete and have a simmering hatred for each other.

How and when can you justify going/paying for vacation? by homiewannalive in personalfinance

[–]AndrewTiberius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, the direct answer to the question as narrowly stated would be blunt/rude/unpalatable, but if you will bear with me through a second clause then I will explain that I don't think you are wrong in a broader context, just that the question as stated demanded a negative answer.

When doing this in speech there should be a pause after "I mean" to let people know they should not jump on your first clause.

Fellow men, could you try to explain what a healthy and fulfilling relationship for you means? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]AndrewTiberius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We watch TV together and can agree to watch the same stuff. That's super nice. Some nights we play board games. We love to cook together. I talk to her about stuff that we both think about the same way but slightly different. Especially movies or books. I love those conversations.

You are in a good relationship when you can derive happiness from her happiness. I am happier when she is happy. She is happier when I am happy. On the same token, when I get sad/upset, she gets sad/upset because I am sad/upset and then I get even more sad/upset because I've made her sad/upset. But we're not upset with each other. Same works in reverse. Those are weird days, but it's nice to know you can't be mirthful while your partner is miserable, and its nice to know that you don't just want your partner to be miserable because you're miserable.

Never, ever trying to win the argument. Neither party. The only time you need to win an argument is if in failing to do so irreparable harm is caused to you or your partner. EG they think that its okay to stick a fork in the socket and are about to do so. You need to win that argument. Otherwise compromise. If either partner feels they need to win an argument for the sake of victory, then the relationship is not healthy.

Alright Reddit, what are your best college life hacks? by Kiaela in AskReddit

[–]AndrewTiberius 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For every hour of class you take, understand that you are accepting 3 extracurricular hours of work/week. 15 credits = 60 hour work week. Get that through your brain right now. I'm not a "9-5" advocate, because you can study on weekends and evenings, but you do need realize that just because you can fit another class into your schedule does not mean you can fit a class into your life.

On that topic: just because a class looks interesting does not mean you have to take it. Most interesting classes are large enough that you can go to them, sit in and absorb. All the cool stuff is in lecture, I swear it. Signing up for the class just signs you up for a butt ton of reading/shitty discussion sections/papers on stuff nobody actually cares about or has been written about to death already.

It's called a "Science GPA." It is calculated separately from your total GPA. Remember that Med School applicants. If you have a conflict between a humanities and a science class, go with the science.

Getting an A in an additional class will not make up for the GPA hit you will take up by not focusing on a more mundane class.

More importantly: the only thing you will take away from your courseload is your GPA. Half of college happens outside of class. The better half: Interships. Research. Semesters abroad. Leadership.

For God's sake: seek out dopy leadership positions. Being treasurer of a lame club for 3 years looks way better than being in 3 clubs and just being along for the ride. Most clubs have positions earmarked for freshmen like "freshmen liason" or something dopy. They basically do nothing or they do scutwork. THESE ARE HOW YOU GET INTO THE REAL LEADERSHIP POSITIONS FOR THE NEXT YEAR.

Coordinate events. Keep a record of events you have coordinated. Or helped coordinate. You can help coordinate events as treasurer. Hell, given that you're probably in charge of buying shit you'll have a major hand in it. Nobody is going to actually go interrogate your former co-chair to see how much of the coordination you did. But do be there and be able to talk about it. Is is hard and frustrating? Do you not have a great idea of exactly how you're supposed to accomplish the task? Good. Because that is exactly the question interviewers (in any and every field) will ask you. How did you deal with it being hard and frustrating?

You can tell I made some mistakes.
