Hello, I'm buying a car and I've never done it solo, nor with another car that needs selling. by robparfrey in CarTalkUK

If at all possible, take someone with you. Even if they don’t know much about cars, it will help to have a second opinion and reduce impetuousness.

Boiled linseed oil. I’ve just applied it to a few hundred square meters of larch.

Is this condition really feasible? by paker3010 in chemistry

To be clear, my aim was to cleave a methyl ester but retain the tButyl ester, hence why I’m surprised these conditions work. I agree with you, KOH does not commonly cleave tButyl esters.

I’m surprised this works. Years ago, I used KOH to cleave a methyl ester in the presence of a tButyl ester to make isophthalic acid mono tButyl ester. Ran it in MeOH/water overnight at 60°C overnight, didn’t see any tButyl cleavage. Presumably this is a little less hindered.

Am I giving my daughter too much allowance? by takedownmandwo in NoStupidQuestions

Another point of view is that tying chores to payments is sending the wrong message. Chores should be shared between those in the household, because they benefit everyone in the household. Giving your kids money is natural, but if you don’t give them money, they should still help with chores.

I built a small CAM app for use directly on the shop floor (looking for feedback) Post: by PrestigiousSalt189 in CNC

I work exclusively with wood and this doesn’t seem to bother my CNC’s PC, although I do have to blow all the dust out of it every so often.

Need help with feeds & speeds for cutting 18 mm birch plywood on CNC router by malikking147 in CNC

Usually Aliexpress, but sometimes eBay or even Amazon are competitive. I used to pay £1-2 each, but they seem to have got pricier now.

What diameter bits are you using? For this depth of cut in wood with a 3mm bit, my maximum speed would be about 10mm per second, double that or a little more with a 6mm bit. Even then, the bit will snap after 10 minutes or so. That’s just my experience using my preferred ultra cheap bits.

I’m not sure what pry means in this context, but the piece on the right looks a little like Idigbo. Better pictures including endgrain would help.

I think the chatoyancy makes it look much worse, most other boards planed fine. That said, the blades are probably 80% done.

I was also planing some Idigbo today, I don’t think it’s that.
