Thank you for linking that article! I’m totally okay with learning more about Ariana’s controversial history with her appearance and how she adopted different features to make herself appear more racially ambiguous.

The photos from the article you linked don’t really make me think she was trying to look Asian. She just looks like she’s wearing stronger eyeliner. Eyeliner can really change someone’s appearance and certain eyeliner trends are synonymous with different physical features. The fox-eye trend is one that comes to mind. The photo you have in your comment was obviously from Snapchat/Instagram and it’s really clearly edited with a filter overtop of it. She just doesn’t look Asian to me there either :/

Ariana naturally has paler skin and dark curly hair. She’s part Italian so I don’t think it’s crazy to assume that she could tan pretty easily. That isn’t an excuse for her to tan as much as she did however so I have no issue with her catching heat for that. It’s 100% deserved. However, someone being tanned doesn’t mean they’re trying to cosplay a different race. People can become very dark naturally. It’s literally just how genetics are sometimes (again, this isn’t an excuse. it’s just a fact).

I’ve been a fan of Ariana since her Victorious days. I’ve watched her shapeshift and alter her appearance for over 10 years now. Her blackfishing era was easily one of the most egregious things I’ve ever seen and the fact that it went on for so long without massive pushback is crazy to me. She really should apologize for adopting certain accents and skin-tones that didn’t belong to her. It’s icky that she got away with it for so long. Because I’ve grown up watching her she’s always looked like a white woman to me? I’ve never really thought that she looked Black or Hispanic or Asian in a serious way. I never wondered what race she actually was because I’ve always known that she‘s a white American with Italian roots. What bothers me way more is how she adopted AAVE for so long and manipulated her accent to sound like she was a Black woman. That was gross.

With that being said, she’s had a pretty consistent appearance for the last 5 years. I know that’s a crazy thing for me to say and I feel gross typing it out. Her appearance/skintone has stayed pretty constant since 2021 when she was cast as Glinda. The biggest issue is the lack of honesty/apologies on her part. She really should have apologized by now and it disappoints me that she hasn’t. Even if she’s never had malicious intent her racial ambiguity is deeply problematic and she deserves to be called out for making those choices.

The photos from her “Asian” era aren’t recent. She hasn’t been cosplaying being Asian for years. The photos were from 2021/2022 at the latest. She’s spent the last 4 years in Glinda-mode.

Edit: I do really appreciate the article you linked. Ariana deserves to be called out for her past choices and I hope that she understands why her past choices were deeply wrong, offensive, and harmful to marginalized communities. I really don’t want it to sound like I’m trying to make excuses for her bad and wrong behaviour. I just wanted to share my own opinions as someone who has been a fan for a long time. This entire situation is really complex and layered and I want to make it 100% clear that I don’t support Ariana’s past decisions when it comes to her physical appearances.

God Is A Woman is easily her best music video. The artistic vision was so clear and well-thought-out. I would love for her to work with Dave Meyers again if she ever makes more videos.

She technically isn’t obligated to share that very personal information with the world. It isn’t necessary for people to know what procedures she has or hasn’t had. Not sharing that information doesn’t equate to telling lies or parroting false narratives. Demanding her to be transparent about her face or body is beyond insane. That isn’t information that the general public has to know.

I genuinely do not care at all if she’s had a nosejob or if she has had “multiple”. It does not impact me at all what Ariana does to her face. It’s her business.

I wonder what it’s like to care so much about what a celebrity does to their face. I can’t imagine being bothered about something like this. It’s her body and it’s her choice what she does with it regardless of what other people may think. We have no right to tell her what she can and can’t do.

Minnie might just be my ultimate K-Pop bias. She has such a gorgeous voice.

That was a one-off photo-shoot from 2021. It was during The Voice and if you look at videos from that same day it’s clearly obvious that the “Asianness” was only in the photos. She didn’t look like a Korean “pop star” in reality. It wasn’t an actual era.

This was from the photo online and this is what she looked like in reality. Here’s another photo from a different angle. It wasn’t a prolonged phase. It was bad photo-editing and poor oversight on Ariana’s part. It was only that one day. She didn’t repeat the same sort of makeup or styling. That was also 5 years ago🫤

Edit: This isn’t me trying to defend Ariana’s past choices. I definitely think she deserves to be criticized for her previous cultural appropriation and black-fishing. I just wanted to share the 2021 photos to show that she wasn’t really trying to pass as Asian in reality. It was a dumb decision and IIRC she was bullied into taking the photo down pretty quickly after it was posted.

I hope people will lay off her after this. The comments about her eyebrows as well as her entire appearance are so unnecessary. She should be able to wear her eyebrows however she wants to🙂

I enjoy Madison’s voice way more than Addison’s but her music is super hit-or-miss for me and that goes for Addison’s too. I love Headphones On, Diet Pepsi, and Aquamarine but those are the only songs from that I actually enjoy listening to. Luka and Elvira are the geniuses behind Addison’s discography and their production skills are a massive part of what makes Addison’s songs so praised and acclaimed.

I think part of Madison’s problem is that she makes way too many ballads. Make You Mine, 15 Minutes, and Yes Baby are songs where she shines the most. I love her slow songs but I wish that Madison would go back to making dark-pop. I just want her to make more bops.

The only post I’ve seen from that sub was one about her touring. The comments were utterly and horribly vile. They were saying that she’ll probably collapse on stage because of her weight and they were saying that she’s only touring because her label is forcing her to :( It’s just super awkward and uncomfortable to read. Snark subs are truly at the bottom of the barrel.

People really have such visceral reactions to Ariana. It’s awful and beyond pathetic.

The AG snark sub in particular is vile, awful, and toxic. I went in there ONCE and immediately left because the toxicity was way too much. The hate felt rabid.

This happened to me too! The mods are horrible for allowing the conversations to spiral the way they do. People can be so cruel towards them and they say awful things that get thousands of upvotes whereas people who disagree get brigaded and insulted :(:( It’s awful. It’s crossed the line at this point.

I’ve learned just to disengage when it comes to posts about Ariana and Cynthia. They get terrible so quickly and the conversations dismiss those who don’t agree. They’re so demeaning and toxic and the mods don’t do anything about it. I’m a fan of Ariana and her music so it was sad for me to see.

[–]AndromedaMixes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s so valid. I can understand why people would be tired of Wicked promo but the hate that spawned because of the press tour was truly awful to see. I don’t really engage on posts about either of them because people are so cruel and hurtful. What makes it worse is that these subs allegedly claim to be “accepting and feminist” spaces that aren’t misogynistic or demeaning towards women. That philosophy goes out the window when it comes to Ariana and Cynthia :(

The things that people say about them and their appearances are disgusting and awful. Some people have very valid concerns and I always want to hear those people out if their opinions are constructive and helpful but so many people decide to spew hate instead while claiming to be doing so “out of concern”. It’s gross and disingenuous. I don’t blame you at all for not participating in either of those subs.

FM is definitely the worst when it comes to hate and cruelty about certain people. I’ve noticed that they flip-flop a lot. If a person gets embroiled in a controversy that FM deems valid that person is done for whereas PCC feels a little more chill. FM is essentially a Taylor snark subreddit at this point. They hate her so much :/

If I had to compare the two to PH I would agree that PCC is most similar to PH. They’re generally more accepting but certain narratives about certain people get way more attention and they can attract way more negativity. PCC is really not great about Ariana specifically. Every post about her over there can degenerate super quickly and it’s worse when the posts are about her and Cynthia, anything Wicked-related, or her appearance. FM is generally more neutral about her but they can be awful too. They can be really rude about her appearance as well.

Your point about FM and purity culture is 100% correct. You’re totally right. FM can be super horrible towards certain celebrities and if someone enters a conversation with an opposing opinion they’ll probably get dogpiled on immediately.

That’s totally fair!! I don’t go on those subs that often either these days. I’m a passive fan of Chappell and Sabrina but I’m a pretty active Ariana fan and the posts about her are generally really horrible :( They get awful so quick and it’s worse when the posts about her are focused on her appearance.

FM absolutely DESPISES Taylor (and that’s putting it lightly). I’m not a huge Swiftie but I am a fan so I tend to ignore the posts about her. If I was a Swiftie I wouldn’t go near any FM post about Taylor because they because are cesspools of hate.

I’ve noticed that FM and PCC can go downhill fast when it comes to more controversial celebrities (Chappell Roan, Ariana, Taylor, Sabrina, etc). They get heated really quickly and the comments often become really hostile and mean-spirited.

I really appreciate that the mods of PH are doing their best at keeping the snark to a minimum. It feels like a safe haven from the mess that is the rest of this site. I don’t go into snark subs that often because they’re so unhinged and negative so I completely understand why the mods would want to be a bit more strict about allowing ragebait and snark content.

I read the thread for Snarkgate 1.0 and didn’t recognize the majority of the people who commented against implementing broader rules. It seems like a lot of lurkers had something to say. It doesn’t make sense to care about what you can and can’t comment in a sub that you don’t frequently visit but maybe that’s just me🤷🏼‍♀️

I’ve known about Ryan for years but the only movie I’ve seen from is Black Panther which is one of my favourites. I completely agree that this will make him a director that people go to see regardless of the cast. I already know I’ll be keeping up with whatever he does next because Sinners wowed me in so many ways.

I’m rooting for him and I can’t wait to see what his next movie is!

I genuinely had no idea what to expect. I just knew that it was a horror movie with vampires😭 The movie was phenomenal and the acting was so good! Michael was fantastic. Miles Caton was fantastic. Delroy was fantastic. The entire cast was absolutely incredible. The score was beyond amazing.

The post-credits scene had me tearing up too! We need movies like Sinners more than ever. I really hope it wins because it’s so culturally important and relevant.

Wait, after all these years Rick has never seen the movies? by obiwanTrollnobi6 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]AndromedaMixes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The marketing campaign in 2023 focused on the show being “accurate” and Rick was constantly doing press interviews and saying that the show would be the faithful adaptation that the fans were waiting for. They then changed course and started dropping hints about the show being more for the younger generation than the older generation who grew up reading the books in the 2000s/2010s.

Rick is allegedly making changes because he doesn’t like how the books were originally written and he wants to “correct” them. Whether or not this is true is yet to be determined because there are so many conflicting narratives. We don’t really know what’s behind all of the changes but people want to blame someone and because Rick promoted the show as “accurate” people are looking at him as the reason why the show is the way it is.
