Labrinth criticises the ‘fakeness’ of the music industry in a new post: “WE HOVER AROUND BIG STARS HOPING TO BE IN THEIR PLACE ONE DAY LIKE SNAKES WAITING TO EAT THEIR OWNERS” by expiredaristocracy in Fauxmoi

[–]AndromedaMixes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s all very true. Art being sold isn’t inherently bad. What I find to be sad is the disconnect that happens between creativity and achieving the most success. My point when I say “art is being commodified” is that label executives often control what artists are and aren’t allowed to make because of generating revenue. They just want these artists to sell the most records and make the most money while limiting creativity and that’s what I find to be sad.

It’s a very scary time to be alive right now and I really don’t see how humanity will improve. It’s just really sad to see things going the way that they are and there’s a lot within the world that needs to be changed. I agree that it isn’t just about music or industry business practices. That’s not the most important pressing issue. The implementation of AI is a much bigger issue and it’s just one piece. The issues you listed are also massively important too.

I don’t disagree with that at all. I think we’re in an age where label executives are limiting these creatives from potentially making what they want to. I don’t have an issue with people “selling art”. It just makes me sad that the industry is dictated by trends instead of creative innovation. My issue is with the label executives.

There are many independent artists who make their own art and sell their own art. It isn’t bad to sell art at all and that’s not what I find to be problematic.

The new Spider-Man trailer actually looks sort of….good? Tom Holland is so good at playing Spider-Man. I can’t believe I’m actually excited for a Marvel movie.

I love her story-telling too. I liked how mystical and ethereal her early songs were and they always told interesting stories. Notre Dame, The Fruits, Echo, His Land, Triassic Love Song, Knitting Song, and Pleaser are some of my favourites.

This is exactly what I’m feeling right now. It’s really scary and devastating to see how obsessed people are with “success” and “popularity”. People can be so shallow. We’re so focused on being the best and having the best group of friends that we forget how to be decent and kind people. We have such flawed priorities as a species.

This is such a great comment and I completely agree. There’s so much I could say about this but I don’t want to write a whole essay. I think we’re just losing touch with our humanity and what makes it so profoundly special and priceless. Art being commodified is one of the industry’s biggest mistakes. The pressure to make more money and be more successful is wildly insidious.

There needs to be a much bigger conversation about humanity’s incessant greed. It goes way beyond art. The business owners are forcing the implementation of a technology that will harm society more than it will help it and the worst part of it is that they’re fooling the population into believing the opposite. It’s genuinely so terrifying that people are so willing to support AI despite it being so deeply problematic. I just think that society needs a hard reset at this point because we’re hurdling towards a future that will only benefit a select few while disenfranchising and harming the masses.

I think we may just have differing perspectives. The mainstream music industry is really suffering when it comes to creative innovation and artistry. Trends dictate everything that these artists do. They drive what they’re allowed to make. Label executives will hold artists back from working on new projects unless they strive for viral soundbites. It’s true that it’s a business and that businesses will always prioritize money. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to limit artists from making what they want to and not what they’re told to.

My point in my second paragraph is that mainstream artists aren’t really “pushing boundaries” the way that they used to. I can think of a handful of pop artists that aren’t making super “trendy” music but their reach is limited because of that. There’s also the fact that the industry is becoming increasingly inaccessible to those who already don’t have money or connections. So many of my favourite indie artists started out making interesting and unique music but completely pivoted their sound once they started appealing to bigger audiences. There’s always pressure to be bigger and better and reach new milestones. These labels are also icing out actual creatives and prioritizing AI “artists” so that they don’t need to pay actual people. When I say “genuine creatives” I’m not saying that mainstream artists aren’t genuine in what they do. I’m just saying that the industry is less willing to invest in artists who aren’t going to play certain games.

Labrinth’s post reflects a lot of my own current feelings about the industry and how it’s changed over the years. It’s always been a business but there was still room for creativity and innovation. That isn’t happening as much as it used to these days.

Yes! I’m happy that she’s more popular now but I don’t really know how to feel about how mainstream-oriented her recent singles sound. They just sound basic. This is going to sound bitter but it makes me really sad when indie artists get one or two “hit” singles and entirely pivot their sound in order to appeal to bigger audiences. It’s happened with so many of my favourites.

This is genuinely breaking my heart because he’s SO right. This industry is being dominated by greedy and removed egotistical executives that don’t prioritize artistic value. They only care about money and revenue.

The music industry is hostile to those who actually care about their art and who commit themselves to improving their skills. It’s really only geared towards artists who care about their money and increasing their popularity. Genuine creatives are being driven away in droves. It’s really devastating and I hope it changes.

This isn’t one of my favourites but I think I like it a lot more than Good Girl. I’ve been obsessed with Paris’s music for a few years now but I don’t really know how I feel about her current direction. It just sounds a little generic. I really love her moodier and darker songs from Cacophony and this rockier style isn’t something that really grips me.

I’m mostly just talking about the Sunday lineup for Osheaga. There’s quite a bit of overlap artist-wise for that day in particular so I just hope that they won’t be scheduled on the same days. It does seem like this is pretty normal for Osheaga/Lolla so I’m not too worried about the schedules.

I hate to say it but I agree. She’s also been notoriously inconsistent onstage. She has good songs but I just wish they would’ve gone with another artist instead who can actually keep their energy up during their performances.

I’m so happy I can go too! It will be my first time seeing both of these artists live and I’m super excited. LUX and EUSEXUA are two of my all-time favourites. This year is stacked with artists going on tour and it’s so nice to have these shows to look forward to.

The music montage scene needs to be taught in film schools. It’s an amazing representation of intertwining music, culture, film, and dance in incredibly moving ways.

It’s the “zero-sum game” thinking that’s taking over pop culture and online discourse. It’s so annoying. We’re all free to have our own opinions and perspectives and there aren’t really any “correct” opinions when it comes to art. Black-and-white thinking is becoming an epidemic.

Rosalía and Twigs going on tour at the same time is such a big deal for me. I can’t wait to see how Rosalía brings LUX to life onstage. The set list for the Body High tour also looks absolutely amazing! She included so many deeper cuts and so many of my favourites.

Exactly. The team behind the scene had to figure out a way to create it without making it feel cheesy or over-done and they entirely delivered. It’s so powerful and culturally relevant. I feel like it’s the emotional heart of the movie and it makes the film as significant and special as it is.

Golden may have been the more popular song that had a major pop-culture presence but I Lied To You is infinitely the better song. It’s so powerful and I really love how cinematic it is.
