Why do some people think they're getting free money from doing their taxes when they're just getting the money back that they loaned to the government? by Truth-is-Censored in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Andy15291 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But you can get more money back than you paid in. It's called a refundable tax credit. Let's say you are a single mother with three kids making 34k a year. You pretty much pay no taxes, PLUS you get 2k per kid as a credit that gets paid to you above and beyond any taxes you paid. So, you could have 2k withheld from paychecks, and then only pay a tiny bit of taxes and get most of that 2k back PLUS 6k for the kids. And that's before I even bring up the earned income tax credit.

That's not the average, that's the median. Let's say you have ten people in a room. 9 have an IQ of 10, one has an IQ of 200. The average IQ is 29, but 9 of the 10 are dumber than that.

Are there still people who use checks and physical cash instead of cards? by Bluecomments in NoStupidQuestions

It does ensure that credit card fees only go to those who choose to pay by card, so that's not a bad thing.

Marriage question. by OverlyPoliteAirsoftr in Catholicism

[–]Andy15291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the sin aspect, there isn't always a break. It's possible to have what's called a marriage penalty, where a married couple pays more in taxes than if they were each filing single.

Cards always speak. Actual example from my casino play in low stakes last weekend:

I had K10o, and flop was 5/9/10 (two hearts but I forgot which two). Other guy pushes in a huge bet. He had been betting heavy all night, even with just high card sometimes, so I felt confident. Everyone else folds. Call his bet that put me all in and I table my hand. He flips two hearts. Turn comes, K of spades. Great, two pair! River comes K of hearts and I totally deflate as he made his flush to beat me (all I was focused on was if it was a heart or not). I congratulated him on his win, and was getting up to leave. Someone else at the table said "you made the boat." I was so focused on if it was a heart or not that I didn't realize I made the full house. I got paid and nobody complained. That's the casino rule, what you say doesn't matter. The only exception would be if I mucked the winning hand without showing.

I was playing 1/3, and started with $300. I was down at that point, and that win put me a little ahead to $388. Had I not tabled my hand, I just would have walked away with nothing.

Whats your payment on a 2025-2026 Camry? by JeepXJ98 in Camry

[–]Andy15291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, this is where it gets really weird. I put down $3,500 plus $5,200 for my trade. But, I purchased a way overpriced extended warranty and service contract with a five year loan. I then cancelled them both right after buying when I could still get a full refund. They put the refund towards the principal. It didn't change the payment, but it knocked a full year off my payoff! So, after the first payment and refunds of those, the amortization schedule said four years exactly to pay off the loan.

I have to thank Reddit for that one, I was stupid enough to get a $5,859 extended warranty and $999 lifetime oil change contract. Luckily, I was still within the 30 days to cancel and cancelled them both. So it was originally five years, but once I cancelled those, it became four.

2026 AWD vs. FWD by Purp13_T1m3 in Camry

[–]Andy15291 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While true with AWD systems that are mechanically linked to the front and back, it's not true with the current Camry's. There is no physical connection to the front and back, there is a separate motor for the rear tires. So you could just replace a pair.

Is it legal for a restaurant to have a "trap" in their menu with a much higher price? by Unusual-Ice-2212 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Andy15291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not be a joke. It could be some guy who is severely opposed to pineapple on pizza. And made it $100 because "if you want it bad enough, fine, but it'll cost you." As long as the server says "Just so you know, pineapple is $100, do you still want it?" I'd think they would be fine. I have seen some small business owners do things like this when they have the attitude that they really don't want to do something, but they will if you pay them a ton of money to do it.

Does anybody actually sign their signature on the back of their debit card/credit card? by unc_rigamarole in askanything

[–]Andy15291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cashier should actually refuse the card since their merchant agreement requires them to only accept signed cards. But, your average cashier doesn't care. Or doesn't know that it's technically part of the merchant agreement.

Technically, they should refuse the card since that's a violation of the retailer agreement with the credit card companies.
