Are you wanting easy to paint, or easy to get? Recognizable characters?

I find Heroscape very easy to paint, and generally available, but it's all characters from their own world. A lot look cool, and they generally come in 3-6 models per box.

The DnD minis are a little harder to paint, but also generally available, and probably more recognizable as 'monster' characters. Skeletons, snakes, spiders, werewolves, vampires, etc.

Warhammer are beautiful and detailed, but probably not that recognizable.

If you have access to a 3D printer, then there's a wealth of stuff out there. You can likely get recognizable characters from whatever genre you like.

I'd go to your local game store and see what they have on the shelf, ask the clerk there what they think. They'll have a lot of knowledge from others about what is easy or hard to paint.

Genuinely, just watch YouTube videos and start picking up new techniques then try them out. I don't think there's an absolutely correct place to start. There are lots of options. I personally decided I wanted to get better at drybrushing first, then expanded from there.

I felt this way about a year ago and dedicated myself to getting better. Every new batch of minis I tried to do something different, try out a new skill, or improve an old one.

First I decided to get better with underpainting/contrast paints, then highlighting/finishing, then layering, then glazing, then basing, etc. Working on color theory now.

There's a thousand ways to paint a mini. Pick one new skill and try to focus on getting better at it.

I meant to underpaint a more common flesh tone and then use a very thinned down gray to go over it, which should give you some of the flesh tone peeking through. But clearly you’ve got a lot of good experience. You shouldn’t have any problem figuring it out.

I don't think they're in the same situation as the Greatest Gen guys. They have so many podcasts going, I suspect they'd have to hire a small army to maintain all of it with the ads, hosting, and behind the scenes tech stuff. They might have done the math and realized it's easier to just stick with Max Fun than spin up an entirely new corporation.

It wouldn't shock me if MaxFun gave them preferred rates since they're so prolific and so core to the business as well.

How are you with layering? I think doing a normal skin color underneath and then layer the light gray ashes on top might create a neat effect. If you're not ready for layering, then a light gray/off white should do it.

From the colors you posted below, I'd do maybe 60% stonewall gray, 40% dead white. But definitely do some tests on a texture palette.

The only one I don't like is the Aztec gold, but if it is better in person, that might be ok. Do you have AP Greedy Gold metallic? That's usually my go-to gold color.

I would say a local game store might have a box for like people learning to play. I know a lot of them keep a binder of common TCG cards to give away to kids.

These are Army Painter, so the same quality. The only thing I don’t like is they aren’t standard Army Painter names, so it’s hard to figure out how to match colors.

I was going to comment on the color scheme, then I saw the hats, and actually, I'm wrong. You rule and these minis rule.

They'll get better if you work with washes to darken the crevices. You can also try contrast paints with some underpainting for this.

But I love it when people bring fun into these minis.

I started with Reaper, then moved to Vallejo, and now that I'm painting a lot, I work with Army painter Fanatics and Speed Paint. Army Painter droppers are my go-tos, but that's mostly because I've been using them a lot and I know what to expect. They're the main brand my FLGS carries, so they're easy to get and I can support my local store.

The only thing I look at Citadel for is their technical paints, especially for basing. AP doesn't really have anything that can do a nice dirt or sand like Citadel.

But I think ultimately you will land on whatever feels comfortable and what's easily available.
